The Water Is Wide | Pat Conroy

A memoir of Conroy's time teaching at a small school on Yamacraw Island in 1969. A desegregation coming-of-age story of sorts for him. It was interesting to see the origins of characters that appeared in his later books.

Not my favorite Conroy. The descriptions of Charleston were long-winded and boring; and quite frankly, annoying. But the story, oh man, what a story! It was compelling, ugly, thought provoking, gripping, and worth reading.

julieclair I‘m adding this to my stack, and will skim past the Charleston descriptions. 😉 7mo
TheBookgeekFrau @julieclair That's exactly how to read it 😁 Outside of that it was so good! 7mo

This heartfelt collection of Conroy‘s most touching blogs, speeches & interviews is certainly a fitting tribute to this most loved author. Though he passed away almost a decade ago, Pat‘s legacy still lives on in his autobiographical novels. He loved writing, though never considered himself anywhere near the high ranks of his own favorite authors. Above all, Pat adored meeting his fans & listening to their stories.

MemoirsForMe @AmyG Indeed! I may have to read his bio. 7mo
MemoirsForMe @CSeydel I‘ve only read his nonfiction and have been so impressed. I remember seeing The Great Santini movie. Tough but good. 7mo
AmyG I loved The Great Santini (book). It‘s what got me started reading his books. 7mo

It‘s time for my monthly #BookishMonopoly! I rolled another lucky 7 and landed on “Nonfiction.” Since I was so enamored by Pat Conroy‘s beautiful writing last month, I chose the tagged book. It was published in 2016, sadly the year Pat lost his battle with pancreatic cancer. It‘s a collection of Pat‘s most charming and memorable interviews, articles & letters as well as tributes honoring his legacy. He left us too soon. 😢
