One of the first elections I was aware of as a kid was David Duke running for governor of Louisiana in 1991. Maybe the sitter let me watch one of his Donahue episodes, but I remember being horrified and also horrified that not everyone else hated him! So this is the story of Duke‘s, former Grand Wizard of the KKK, rise to power and prominence in politics and how it relates to politics today. An interesting read, if a bit niche.

KathyWheeler We lived in Louisiana during that election. There were bumper stickers that said, “Vote for the crook; it‘s important.” I never felt dirty coming out of a voting booth before. 1mo
Megabooks @KathyWheeler it was definitely a case between a bad choice and a worse choice. I‘ll be really interested to read what you think about the book. 1mo
KathyWheeler @Megabooks I immediately put it on my tbr afternoon seeing this post. 1mo
Cinfhen It‘s going on my #MaybeSomeday list 😉 1mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️ A bit gimmicky if I‘m being honest, but an okay celebrity memoir. Years of unknown MS symptoms + years of alcoholism. Some pretty brutal stuff flecked with Hollywood name dropping. The nonlinear storytelling didn‘t bother me like it has some folks. I thought it helped provide bits and pieces of a broader picture. Blair is an excellent narrator with one major exception: the crying spurts felt disingenuous, as if crying on cue.

Cinfhen Meg wasn‘t crazy about this one either / so #Maybesomeday and definitely #BorrowNotBuy 5mo
britt_brooke @Cinfhen Just skip it. 😂 5mo

This is an ambitious memoir. Sellers covers a variety of topics and balances broader concepts with small details. His writing style is engaging, but his narration is only okay. He‘s connected to Civil Rights history, but lives with anxiety. He and his wife just celebrated their twins‘ 3rd bday. But it was touch-and-go for a while.

BarbaraTheBibliophage And I‘ll probably pick a prompt for #nonfictionchallenge2022 but right now I can‘t decide! @Riveted_Reader_Melissa 13mo
Cinfhen I have this one but I‘m still not really compelled to listen🎧 #MaybeSomeday 13mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen I hear that. My reading goal this year is less challenges and more mood reading. I‘m just not feeling all the planning!! (Of course, I‘m still doing three challenges and finishing up one from 2022 … so we shall see …) 🤪 13mo

Cinfhen It‘s a long time until 2023 so I‘m not gonna push myself to rush through challenges 😉plus I‘m listening to this audio for #BlackOwnedPublishingHouse and it‘s really good 13mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen Sounds like a plan!! Enjoy the leisure! 13mo

I enjoyed the beginning of this ripped-from-the-headlines YA thriller more than its ending. The beginning is fairly realistic grooming and abuse of a teen singer by an artist based on R Kelly. But by the end, she‘s zooming around town trying to solve the mystery of his death on her own. I think the unbelievability of her crime-solving skills turned this into a so-so. Great narration on the #audiobook, though.

Megabooks @Cinfhen Eh, I don‘t think you‘d enjoy this. 2y
Cinfhen 👍🏻😘 2y
NovelNancyM I agree; I found the beginning and middle much more plausible than the ending.
Megabooks @NovelNancy yeah, the first parts were solid then it went off the deep end. 8mo

@Hooked_on_books is right. This provides a lot of nuance to the story of the story of the Blackwell sisters. I found myself relating more to Emily‘s love of patient care rather than Elizabeth‘s determination to educate more women. (I wonder if Elizabeth‘s reluctance had to do with an infection that cost her an eye during training.) I did not know that both sisters taught schoolchildren within 30 miles of me (and hated doing it) before ⬇️

Megabooks ⬆️ attending medical school. Overall I was impressed by the lengths both women went to to attain their degrees. I‘d definitely recommend this for a deeper understanding of their story. #audiobook 2y
Cinfhen After reading your review and @Hooked_on_books I think im taking a pass😆too many other books I want to read!!! 2y
Hooked_on_books Oh man, Cindy, you‘ll be missing out! But frankly, this is a bit of a niche book, so I understand someone passing on it for other fare. Glad you liked it, Meg! @Cinfhen 2y

Megabooks @Cinfhen I agree with @Hooked_on_books that you‘re missing out on an interesting piece of history, but I can also see why Holly and I would find it more interesting. Thanks for getting this off the TBR pile, Holly!! 2y

I haven't actually read this yet. It's from the 'ol tbr pile. Picked it up a couple years ago at a used book sale. 🤷‍♂️

AlaMich I liked this a lot, although it would have benefited very much from some thoughtful page shaving. Like about 200 pages, if I remember correctly. 3y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @AlaMich Its a chunkster for sure. I'll get to it one day. ☺️ 3y

North and South (Revised) | Elizabeth Gaskell
post image

#RedRoseSeptember Day 5: #HitTheNorth reminded me of this classic reviewed by Iphigene: “Gaskell‘s novel is a reflection of a changing era. Take Margaret, a woman raised in the South where things were traditional—women don‘t shake men‘s hand or work in factories. Ironically, her so called conservatism (unfamiliarity with the Northern Ways) is a misfit to the south.” Her full review here: https://wp.me/pDlzr-1B

arlenefinnigan I've never read any Elizabeth Gaskell, I really should. 3y
Kimberlone I really love this book (totally underrated) and the bbc miniseries is super good too. 3y
