Bailedbailed

I‘m bailing at about 30% of this novella. I just don‘t care about these characters, especially one of them. The world-building—Earth inhabitants fleeing a decimated planet build a new society on Jupiter—is sort of interesting, but I‘m done. Moving on…

I‘m disappointed not to have liked this more than I did! A sapphic sci-fi Sherlock Holmes?! Yes, please. And all those aspects were great. The worldbuilding was so creative and fascinating. But I never felt a connection to the characters or the chemistry between them. I never felt the importance of Pleiti‘s profession and the ending fell pretty flat because of that.

Malka Older has created a brilliant sci-fi spin on Sherlock Holmes that features Investigator Mossa and scholar Pleiti. I can't think of anything I didn't love about this novella. The characters are well-crafted with distinct individual voices (and narrator Lindsey Dorcus does an excellent job bringing them to life). Older's world of Giant feels real without overloading the reader with needless exposition. I highly recommend this series.

Wellll, this review goes back to September 😬

I really enjoyed this sci-fi steampunk-ish mystery novella, set on a gas giant where humanity has fled after the collapse of Earth‘s environment. The world building is fascinating and subtly done, and the character development is equally subtle and patient. I also liked the mystery‘s slow unfolding of hints and clues. I‘m looking forward to reading more of this series!

Gender-bent Sherlock and Watson, in an off-planet future, with romance. i love the romantic vibe of this SF novella, in which the “Watson,“ falls once again under the spell of a Holmes she doesn't fully understand but can't stop caring for.

Book rec: jump scare.

4/5

A fun, sherlock holmes style mystery taking place in the future on when humanity has relocated to live on a series of rail connected platforms above Jupiter. I loved the world building and look forward to reading future books in the series.

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

An interesting sapphic/queer dystopian science fiction gender swapped Sherlock Holmes and Watson retelling, set on Jupiter.

Mossa‘s investigation starts after a man disappears from one of the less often visited platforms they live on. Potential suicide? Or is there something more going on?
