Senor Vivo and the Coca Lord | Louis de Bernieres
post image
Mehso-so

This is a satirical portrait of what seems to be #Colombia, a country tormented by coca lords and an incapable government. Señor Vivo is very critical of drugs lord Pablo Ecobandodo, who in turns wants him dead. By luck, naivity and magical realism, Vivo manages to survive each attempt on his life. People believe he is a kind of savior and start following him.
A so-so read. Obviously no García Márquez.

squirrelbrain I read a few of this ‘series‘ a while ago, even though I didn‘t love them! 12mo

Ruthiella Interesting! I was gonna go with Florida for this category. So US-centric of me! I so could expand that! 12mo
Cinfhen Interesting…I can‘t remember if I read my #Colombia book yet 🤷🏼‍♀️ 12mo
BarbaraBB @Ruthiella Lol I would never think of the US for Sunshine noir, but maybe that‘s exactly what the prompt means.. I was thinking of the southern hemisphere 🤷🏻‍♀️ 12mo

Ernaux writes about her all consuming relationship with a married man.

In the Norwegian translation this is under 60p so I don‘t want to say much more.

Just finished reading a book published in #1991 and ready to start one written in #2021, 30 years later.

The "wisdom of no escape" was easy to read but I feel I haven't learned much from it. Also, there's too much religion (Buddhism) in it which I think should have been stated on the cover. Overall, it made me feel calm when I was reading it so it's been a pleasant enough read.

In trying to determine why a young drug addict died, Inspector John Rebus continues to look for clues in the case, because he knows there has to be more to it than a drug overdose.

I saw this movie ages ago and avoided the book because of the topic - a bus crash in the winter that kills more than a dozen children. Told from multiple perspectives - a parent, the driver, a survivor, and the attorney - it deals with the grief but also with the personal lives of the people impacted by the tragedy and the impact on the entire small town. Despite sadness it also captures the beauty of remote upstate ny. #bbrc #yeahbaby #snow #1991

Reagan I‘ve never seen the movie but I really enjoyed the book. I should watch the movie though, Sarah Polley is great! 4y
Tamra I never realized the movie was based on a novel - will stack! 1y

Excellent graphic novel! Talking to our elders isn't always easy, and this comic reflects that, but the stories of his father's time during the Nazi Era is both touching and heartbreaking and incredibly timeless.

Simona I was so touched by this graphic novel❣️😢 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Simona Yes! It did such a great job with both its main topic, and dealing with elder care as parents get older. I was very impressed with how it messed the two and interwove how past experiences helped effect the present too. 7y

I finally finished!! It took months--and I maxed out renewals, had to re-request. This is written in a style that isn't quite stream of consciousness, but I found it exhausting to follow. Looooong chapters. About a song/dance movie family and all the branches, divorces, cheating, etc, and all the twins in the extended family. Not sure why this is on the #1001books list, but it's done! #192019 #1991

Amtrak trip from Raton, NM, to LA meant I managed to finish this in one day! An easy read about silk factory girls living outside Canton in the 1920s-30s. A good story, but were their lives really this good? How historically accurate is this historical fiction? I have no idea! #192019 #1991
