Singout
Dance Hall of the Dead | Tony Hillerman
Pickpick

My #Booked2023 #SunshineNoir book: I was tempted to try a really dense South American one, but went for this relatively light southwestern US murder mystery instead. Well written, with engaging characters and insights into Indigenous cultures that are different from those in this part of Turtle Island, with a Navajo detective at the centre and traditional beliefs and practices playing a role in the unfolding of the story: part of a longer series.

Cinfhen Great!! Hope you were able to get all these books entered in the third quarter drawing before the midnight deadline 🙏🏼 (edited) 7mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage My mom loved Hillerman and I‘ve never read any of his books. Maybe I should! 7mo

The Villa: A Novel | Rachel Hawkins

Pickpick

Dual timelines. 1970‘s and Present Day. Italian Villa with a tragic history. British Rock & Roll. Writing music. Writing books. Best friends. Sisters. Twisted love. Murder. Gothic. Fast paced. A bit confused on ending. Audio. Difficult to turn back the pages. #sunshinenoir #booked2023 #blameitonlitsy

Cinfhen GREAT REVIEW! I felt very similarly and I too listened on audio. Great pick for #SunshineNoir ☀️ 7mo
DivineDiana @Cinfhen Thank you! Wishing you a good and sweet year! 🩷 7mo

Mehso-so

This book was just okay. It has a cool premise of Hal, a writer who receives an exclusive invitation to go with a movie group to the Cannes Film Fest in the 1950s. There is a second plot, that of the journal that the movie is based on. The journal is actually more interesting, and the love affair between Hal and Stella is rather predictable, and the twist ending is predictable.

Grave Descend: A Novel | Michael Crichton, John Lange

Pickpick

I haven‘t read any of Crichton‘s crime novels before so I randomly picked up this one. I enjoyed it, but it possibly could have been a bit longer. A diver is hired to recover items from a yacht sunk off the coast of Jamaica. This should be simple for an expert diver like McGregor, but not everything is adding up and danger is everywhere. I think this will work for #Booked2023 #SunshineNoir or I guess I‘m saying it does. 😂

Ruthiella I think it totally works for Sunshine Noir! 👍 9mo

This was a fun older-YA mystery set in Surfers Paradise and Byron Bay. Feminist, a bit screwball, and takes the piss out of new-age white “wellness“ culture nicely. Romancey subplot.

Smashed my reading challenges: #sunshinenoir for #booked2023 , #hotgogglesummer for #hbreadingembrace , #screwballmystery for #NoShameReadathon23

julieclair Stacked! I still need a Sunshine Noir book and this one looks fun. 😀 10mo
Lauredhel @julieclair Ooh, fwiw I had a bit of a shortlist for this one - Jane Harper, Candice Fox, Sarah Bailey, Nailini Singh's “Madness of Sunshine“, the Veronica Mars books (Rob Thomas) 10mo
julieclair Ooohhh… thanks! This is helpful. It‘s not a genre I normally read. ☀️ 10mo

Lauredhel @julieclair Another one that would be perfect- 10mo
Lauredhel @julieclair I keep thinking of more - if you like romantic suspense, Helene Young has a series starting here. Lots of competence porn 10mo
Cinfhen Enjoy 10mo
julieclair @Lauredhel Thank you for all these great recommendations! I have added several of them to my TBR, and now will have no trouble fulfilling the Sunshine Noir prompt. 😎☀️👍 10mo

A Bad Day for Sunshine | Darynda Jones

Mehso-so

29/23 I‘ve just finished this and it is the most terribly written thing I‘ve put my eyes on in a while. I was also very troubled by some of the content. But it still got a so so because I was interested in the actual plot (I just had to ignore how terrible the rest of it was). Read for #booked23 #sunshinenoir ☀️

Cinfhen Love the photo and your review!!!! I‘ve also become some what of a #LiterarySnob when I come across a poorly written book 😂 UGH!!! No tolerance whatsoever 11mo

I just….. don‘t know how I felt about this. The “mystery” fell a bit flat for me, and I semi guessed what happened way before it was revealed. I liked her writing, but so much of the book involved these detailed, flowery descriptions of places (Saint X, NYC) and it seemed like the characters got a bit lost sometimes. I liked it, but with reservations 🤷‍♀️ #booked2023 #sunshinenoir @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @alisiakae

Megabooks Yes!!! Agree with your review @CBee !! 11mo
CBee @Megabooks thanks! It ticked off a challenge at least 😂😊 11mo
Cinfhen I really liked this book when I listened to the audio - I think the multicast narration made it very engaging. It‘s a perfect pick for #SunshineNoir and #IslandVibes 😉 11mo
CBee @Cinfhen I can see how audio might be better! Glad you enjoyed it 💚😊 11mo
