Dionisio Vivo, a young South American lecturer in philosophy, is puzzled by the hideously mutilated corpses that keep turning up outside his front door. To his friend, Ramon, one of the few honest policemen in town, the message is all too clear: Dionisios letters to the press, exposing the drug barons, must stop; and although Dionisio manages to escape the hit-men sent to get him, he soon realizes that others are more vulnerable, and his love for them leads him to take a colossal revenge. Senor Vivo and the Coca Lord is the second novel in a trilogy set in South America. It won a Commonwealth Writers Prize in 1992.

Mehso-so

This is a satirical portrait of what seems to be #Colombia, a country tormented by coca lords and an incapable government. Señor Vivo is very critical of drugs lord Pablo Ecobandodo, who in turns wants him dead. By luck, naivity and magical realism, Vivo manages to survive each attempt on his life. People believe he is a kind of savior and start following him.
A so-so read. Obviously no García Márquez.

What launches as a delightful love story with absurdist drug lords in the land of magical realism suddenly wrenches about 3/4‘s of the way through into graphic violence bringing the tragedy of the cocaine trade into sharp focus. I did not totally appreciate the huge amount of characters and the skimpy plot but the writing is lush and the book unique. #readaroundtheworld #colombia

Another #characterwhosharesyourname for #riotgrams. This is the masculine form of my name. I actually met a Dionisio once. He was standing in the checkout line behind me at the bookstore. It was so fun finding my name twin out in the wild. Hasn't happened since!
