House of Leaves-Mark Z. Danielewski
House of Leaves-Mark Z. Danielewski | Mark Z. Danielewski
Years ago, when House of Leaves was first being passed around, it was nothing more than a badly bundled heap of paper, parts of which would occasionally surface on the Internet. No one could have anticipated the small but devoted following this terrifying story would soon command. Starting with an odd assortment of marginalized youth -- musicians, tattoo artists, programmers, strippers, environmentalists, and adrenaline junkies -- the book eventually made its way into the hands of older generations, who not only found themselves in those strangely arranged pages but also discovered a way back into the lives of their estranged children. Now, for the first time, this astonishing novel is made available in book form, complete with the original colored words, vertical footnotes, and newly added second and third appendices. The story remains unchanged, focusing on a young family that moves into a small home on Ash Tree Lane where they discover something is terribly wrong: their house is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. Of course, neither Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Will Navidson nor his companion Karen Green was prepared to face the consequences of that impossibility, until the day their two little children wandered off and their voices eerily began to return another story -- of creature darkness, of an ever-growing abyss behind a closet door, and of that unholy growl which soon enough would tear through their walls and consume all their dreams.

It's been about 10 years, but I have never stopped thinking about this book. Taking another journey into the horror of 'House of Leaves' and loving every minute of it.

See you on the other side.

I call BS on this claim. No one could read this in one sitting. 😆 That said, once I gotten past the first hundred pages and parts of the Appended materials, I was really looking forward to picking it back up and discovering what would happen next. I loved the innovative layout and all the crazy meta aspects to the story. I‘m also a tiny bit worried about the author‘s mental health. 😅

#HouseOfLeaves

vivastory I flew through this in I think three days or so, but I agree, no way you can read it in one sitting 5y
Leniverse @vivastory Exactly! Three days is flying through it. So unless the reviewer didn‘t sleep for two or three days... 😂 5y

The book! I haz it, at last! 😁
I shall do my best to catch up so I can join the #HouseofLeaves discussion, but halfway by the 14th might be a bit ambitious. 😬
Funny story: At the library checkout the computer system claimed the book didn‘t exist. It took the staff three attempts to create an entry for it. I told them this seemed in line with the theme of the book. 😂

AmyG That‘s actually pretty funny. My guess is they couldn‘t find it. You will understand when you read it. 6y
wtimblin I have an electronic copy of this but reluctant to read as I'm worried it won't have the impact the hard copy will. Hope you enjoy, let us know how you get on 6y
Leniverse @wtimblin Yes, I think this is one that needs to be read from paper. I'm excited about it! Hope I'm still excited after a few chapters. 😂 6y

Day 10- Favourite book quote I have lots but as this is the best book I have and will ever read I picked this. #booksandshelfiesM18 @Amabear

ShookBelf This book is one of my choices for my reading challenge this year but I am so intimidated by it that it has sat on my shelf staring at me for the last three months! Must pluck up the courage at some point. 6y
AmyG @ShookBelf There is a buddy read for this in October if you want to join. Might make it easier to read...with a group. 6y
ShookBelf @AmyG - that sounds like my cup of tea. Would you post the details please? Thanks x 6y

AmyG @ShookBelf I don‘t really have any details. But....when I do, I will repost them for anyone who wants to do this. 6y
Amabear Sound wayyyy too scary for me but love the quote! 😍 6y
ShookBelf Just found a book club on Facebook for this - the author is hosting it so I've joined that. I'm about two weeks late but should hopefully be able to catch up. 6y
Teakillamockingbird @ShookBelf Pluck up the courage you won‘t be disappointed I read it about 3 years ago and started it again for the Facebook book club. It‘s a book that will stay with you forever you look at the pages and think how the hell am I meant to read this but please read it. Join the book club on FB the book we are only on the introduction in the book so easily find your way round. I‘m excited to read it a 2nd time as I‘m sure there‘s lots I‘ve missed xx 6y

Britt_Downes I love this book. Have you joined the HoL book club on Facebook? 6y
shadowspeak17 @Britt_Downes I love it too! 😊 Yes, I joined. I‘m hoping it will be fun and insightful like the one for The Familiar was. 🤞🏽 Have you joined the HoL book club too? 6y
Britt_Downes @shadowspeak17 I joined, too, yes. I need to pick up a new copy of the book before it starts, my current one is in pretty rough shape. I haven't read The Familiar yet, what are your thoughts on it? 6y

shadowspeak17 @Britt_Downes Cool, see you there! 😄 I really like The Familiar. The story is interesting and the book itself is very unique, and the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. The way parts of it are written really encourages you to reach out to other people, and I didn‘t think I would like that, but with the book club it was fun. 😊 I‘d recommend giving it a shot. 6y
Britt_Downes Awesome, I'll give it a shot. Thank you for your input! 6y

Congratulations @DGRachel on your Litsy milestone! 🎉🎊🎉🎊
Thank you for hosting this #sharethelitsylove #giveaway! 😃

I‘ve recommended House of Leaves to all my close friends because it‘s a book unlike any I‘ve read before and it has really stuck with me.

The House of Leaves Book Club on Facebook is a go! 😃 The group will be reading through it starting February 26 and continuing through May 31. If anyone is interested in joining in, here‘s a link to the group:

EstelaV They don't say how it will work. Chapter by chapter? R3ad at your own pace? How does the group not accidently give away spoilers. Are there times were tuning in to group discuss? THERES NO ORDER! 6y
Heideschrampf Maybe i'll ne brave enough to finish this time.... 6y
shadowspeak17 @EstelaV Girl, chill! 🤦🏽‍♀️ If they do it like they did with The Familiar, there will be a schedule that will be like Ch. 1-4 Feb. 26-March 4, or something like that. People will mark their posts with the section they‘re posting about and will post whenever they want during that time period. You can join in the discussion whenever you‘ve read the part being posted about. If they read ahead, they‘ll mark it with a spoiler tag at the beginning. 6y

shadowspeak17 @EstelaV There are Q&As with MZD at the end of each month, but I think those are the only discussions with times. 6y
melyndarae Omg I read the description and it gave me chills. I totally want to read this. Lol. 6y
2BR02B I just read this for my book club. Or tried to, anyway... 😅 6y
shadowspeak17 @melyndarae You totally should! It‘s really good! 😃 6y
melyndarae We'll see. Lol. 6y
shadowspeak17 @Heideschrampf @2BR02B It can be a bit hard to get through at times. It took me a ridiculously long time to get through it the first time I read it, and when I finished, I wasn‘t sure what I thought about it. I loved some parts and hated others. It really stuck with me though in a way a lot of other books don‘t, and when I finally read it again last year I thought it was great. I hope you guys can finish it. I think it‘s definitely worth it. 😄 6y

My #FirstReadOfTheYear was a reread of House of Leaves which also ended up being the first of many Danielewski rereads this year, and the first of many rereads in general since about half of the books I read this year were rereads.

I loved this book. The weird way you have to read it turning the pages around and upside down. I love the story of house. I found some aspects of the commentary hard going. I wonder if this was a standard novel however, it it would be so gripping. This is an unusual book which makes it brilliant and well worth a read. #maybookflowers #review ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

So many things about this book are #impossible. Impossible hallways, impossible stairways an impossible structure. Impossible to understand how someone can write something so intricate. I found it #impossible to put down. #lyricalapril @Cinfhen

saresmoore I'm excited to start this one on your recommendation! It is such a pretty book, too! 7y

mklong This sounds great! I do an impossible read every year, this year is War and Peace, maybe I can get around to this one for 2018 7y
Moray_Reads @mklong I did War and Peace a couple of years ago and it's just as good as people say it is. A masterpiece. I'm supposed to be doing Finnegans Wake this year but I haven't even started yet 😣 7y
mklong Finnegans Wake is on my list too. It's the only Joyce I haven't read, but I'm so scared of it! Good luck! 7y

Well I'm afraid that I just couldn't do it. I gave it a try but it just didn't hold my interest.

JacintaMCarter It took me six months to read that book. I had to keep setting it aside and reading other things. I am glad that I finished it, though. 8y
Foxyfictionista It just wasn't worth the time for me. I couldn't stand the main character and I hated how there were parallel stories. It wouldn't have been so bad if at least one of them was. It just wasn't for me. interesting but I didn't find that the documentary style worked for me. It felt so impersonal and there was nothing for me to latch onto; nothing that could hold my interest. I was very aware of his many pages I had left which is not a good sighn 8y
Foxyfictionista Whoa... Some crazy thing happened with my comment and the words are switched around and I can't seem to edit it. OH MY GOD I'VE ANGERED THIS BOOK! 💀👻👿 8y

A few pages in and this book isn't grabbing me. I'm going to keep reading and see how it goes but I'm not a fan of the "It gets better later in the book" concept. If a book doesn't grab me within the first 50 pages, I'll dnf it. It probably seems a bit harsh but I've got a bunch of other books to read so I don't like to waste my time on something that doesn't keep me enthralled.

What's your philosophy on finishing books?

Eyelit I'm a bit similar - 50ish pages or 3 chapters before I'll set it aside (or give up if it's just really not my thing) 8y
melbeautyandbooks I agree. I also give it 50 or so pages before I dnf it. There are so many good books out there. Thanks to Litsy my TBR is large! 📚📖❤️ 8y
Marchpane Generally not a fan of waiting for it to get better either, but sometimes it just takes me a while to get immersed in a book. So I usually read at least the first third or so. 8y
Foxyfictionista @Eyelit @melbeautyandbooks @Marchpane I've read that a good rule of thumb is 100 pages minus your age but sometimes I'm too impatient. 8y
