“Between the dormant static in my brain and the squeeze of her fingers, we‘re Einstein‘s secret equation.”

I love this collection of short stories so much, I‘m almost furious this was overlooked last year. It‘s everything a short story collection should be. Strange, unpredictable, and enigmatic.

Obsessed with this collection of short stories!

A mother has a son born with a tail; a woman sees her boyfriend‘s meaty doppelgänger; twin sisters who have a past and a guy who is...strange; ...these are weird and amazing and there‘s 18 of them! I feel spoiled with this author. Absolutely love her writing. ❤️

Happy reading. ??

Cathythoughts Isn‘t it heaven when you find a book you really love ❤️ ( I‘m still on the search for a better book than Secret History 😉) 6y
bookloo @Cathythoughts 😍☺️ You didn‘t forget! I‘m having absolutely zero luck, but still on the lookout. 💞 6y

Just finished this really great short story collection. My first completed collection of the year. I love Okojie's writing style and cant wait to read more. This was an extremely diverse collection of stories with supernatural, paranormal and realistic entries. Definitely recommend!

It's February and so far #keepingitshort is a success. This is easily the most short stories I have read in a long time.

Late post: this was January's Call Box book. Call Box is a library themed (run by librarian) subscription box of black literature. Each month you get a new book, items themed around the book, AND A CARD CATALOG RECORD AND SPINE LABEL for the book. Yeah, I nerd out a bit about the records. Anyway, subscribing has been my gift to myself this year. Discovered so many great writers and new voices through it. I've loved every selection so far.

Lacythebookworm That's awesome! 📚😊 7y

Only 6 more short stories in this collection. I might end up finishing this earlier than anticipated because its a e-arc from Netgalley. I accidentally read these two back to back between books. My bad! It's just that good.

Crushed. This one hurt.

"I'm sad that we never see monsters changing their disguises. Sad that teenage conformity can be a knife to the skin and that unspoken things can take the shapes of wolves and men interchangably."

Not sure why I loved this particular short story so much but the idea of a Robin Hood type character dressed in a chicken costume is just really memorable.

#allisnotlost as long as we have short stories with leads like this. Thanks for the shot at free books @Liberty (I have a feeling if you are reading this you follow her but if not you really should)!

This was a very odd story about two souls in the afterlife. Not at all what I was expecting but intriguing.

britt_brooke Hey there, I'm planning to use the keepingitshort hashtag when I complete a book of short stories. Would like me to tag you as well? Or just the #? 😊 7y
TheNextBook @britt_brooke tag me so I can see it and get ideas! Honestly this has been the best thing for me. I cannot read through an entire collection without getting bored. This had made it so much easier to really enjoy the different stories. 7y
britt_brooke @TheNextBook Thanks, will do! I can't read them straight through either, but I'm enjoying reading a story every few days. 7y

readinginthedark Nice! I'm reading a lot of short stories this year, too, so I'm gonna' jump on your hashtag bandwagon. My original plan was to read at least one a week, but I'm already ahead. So into short stories right now! 7y
TheNextBook @readinginthedark welcome to wagon! 😂 It's January and so far I am happy with this decision. I'm not doing any challenges this year, only this short story theme. I have too many books on my tbr that I finally want to get too 7y
readinginthedark @TheNextBook I get it. The only formal challenge I'm doing is LitsyAtoZ for that reason. Mainly I'm trying to make progress with my current unfinished series and TBR books. 7y
bitterbear @TheNextBook Reading short story collections for me is difficult too... 7y
TheNextBook @bitterbear I would definitely recommend this then! 7y

Because the publisher ran out of the print run, my #callnumberbox was book less (for now--it's coming). But that anticipation makes me want it more. This box has been great so far.

WhatDeeReads I'm considering subscribing to this. 7y
Kelly @Lucky_LaDee I've been enjoying it a lot. It's giving me a solid book to look forward to each month 7y

There is no set number for how many short stories I want to read throughout the year. I simply want to read at least one after each book I read. So far so good! Five books read, five short stories read so far in 2017.

Foxyfictionista I got really excited yesterday to see that my library has an entire shelf of short stories. How to choose though. Like you, I want to read more of them. I feel like it's quite an under-appreciated art form. 7y
TheNextBook @Foxyfictionista I was absolutely failing at reading short stories! I needed this theme to get me reading more short stories! I already had some short story collections by King that I wanted to read. I came across this collection and absolutely love it. 7y
Foxyfictionista There are so many I want to read now. Rebecca du Maurier, James Baldwin, Stephen King, Ted Chiang, and now the one that you've posted. I'm also going to raid the heck out of that short story section of the library. Please feel free to tag me in any of your short story reviews so that I can be in the lookout for more good stuff. 7y
See All 7 Comments
Leniverse I should do that! I tend to either slog through a whole volume or just not read short stories at all. One after each novel read might work better for me. 7y
TheNextBook @Foxyfictionista Let me recommend this book now. I am thorougly enjoying it! 7y
TheNextBook @Leniverse I am really enjoying reading the short stories like this. I've been able to enjoy the stories but can still dive fully into a novel. 7y

#netgalley

This is my second short story from this collection and my fourth short story for the year.

Animal Parts was really interesting. It's the story of a woman and her son who wS born with a tail. It's a really heart wrenching look at the way society treats outsiders.

I'm in love with Okojie's writing. I can't think of a better word than intoxicating.

Whoa, I've only read this one short story so far but damn if it wasn't hard hitting and really well damn done! I won't put up a rating until I finish all the stories. But I don't think I'll be disappointed. Not if the rest of the stories are like this one.
