Shattered Dreams
Shattered Dreams: My Life as a Polygamist's Wife | Irene Spencer
11 posts | 18 read | 29 to read
Irene Spencer did as she felt God commanded in marrying her brother-in-law Verlan LeBaron, becoming his second wife. When the government raided the fundamentalist, polygamous Mormon village of Short Creek, Arizona, Irene and her family fled to Verlan's brothers' Mexican ranch. They lived in squalor and desolate conditions in the Mexican desert with Verlan's six brothers, one sister, and numerous wives and children. Readers will be appalled and astonished, but most amazingly, greatly inspired. Irene's dramatic story reveals how far religion can be stretched and abused and how one woman and her children found their way out, into truth and redemption.

Beautiful memoir that captures the intimate details of polygamy and its insane indoctrination of lies.

DAY 16 #Borderline | Decades ago, a Fundamentalist LDS sect settled in the border towns of Hilldale, Utah and Colorado City, Arizona. This way, they can cross jurisdictions to quickly evade police since plural marriage (among other practices) are illegal. Other such groups have settled in Mexico and Canada.

I originally felt sorry for the author. It was heartbreaking to see how her childhood was affected by her mother's life in polygamy. But then, as Spencer grows up, everyone in her life warns her to avoid marrying into polygamy. But instead of listening to literally everyone, she runs off to be the second wife of a polygamist. And then her whole life pretty much goes downhill from there, just like everyone told her it would.

overtheedge I read this, and thought the same way about her..... 6y

Brain break time. Someone recommended this to me and I totally forgot who it was 🙈 but I want to say thank you!! I need a break from all this school reading. I am totally excited for this memoir 📖

britt_brooke Might have been me, but I have a terrible memory! I read this recently. 👍🏻 6y

“ ... in polygamy, nothing is ever enough.”

This is a very detailed account of Spencer‘s life as a Fundamentalist Latter Day Saint (#FLDS) and destitute polygamist raising a shit-ton of kids. I couldn‘t help but love her blunt personality, but my heart ached for her. If you‘ve read The Sound of Gravel, you might be interested to know that Irene Spencer‘s husband Verlan and Ruth Wariner‘s father Joel were brothers. ⬇️ #cults

Reggie It‘s so funny, when I look through the feeds @Kaye had become the go to for true crime and you are very quickly becoming my cults go to. Lol 6y
JenlovesJT47 Have you read the one written by his "favorite" wife? I enjoyed both of these books but enjoyed Susan's a little more. 6y

britt_brooke @vivastory Under the Banner of Heaven was my first FLDS book, and so began my obsession. Plus, Krakauer is amazing. 6y

CocoReads I‘m super fascinated with the FLDS and cults in general 6y
Lcsmcat Have you read ? 6y
CocoReads @britt_brooke so glad I‘m not the only one. Because over here is all “moms watching another documentary about those crazy polygamists again”. Meanwhile I can‘t stand Sister Wives. 🤷‍♀️it‘s not so much the wives—I‘m fine until he‘s on the screen and then I‘m like ugh, change the channel. He‘s such a tool. 6y
britt_brooke @Lcsmcat Yes, I really liked how that one went back and forth between the fictional story and actual history. 6y
britt_brooke @CocoReads Ha! Yes, I agree. I tried watching Sister Wives and made it through about 4 episodes. I do love a good documentary now and then. You‘ve probably seen it, but Prophet‘s Prey was excellent. 6y
CocoReads I haven‘t seen it yet. Now that thing 2 lives here again, my screen time is even more limited. I do watch on my laptop sometimes but I‘d rather watch tv on the tv. I‘ll have to catch it soon though. 6y
KathyWheeler I have read a lot of these books. I liked this one. Under the Banner of Heaven must be a gateway book to this obsession— it was my first one too. 😄 (edited) 6y
britt_brooke @KathyWheeler Ha! That‘s too funny. Krakauer hooked us! 6y

First book finished in my #litsypartyofone this weekend - this is actually the third book I've read written by women who married into or were born into the notorious LeBaron polygamous Mormon cult, and I don't think they get easier as I become more familiar with the many branches of this tree. It continues to break my heart to learn the lengths people will go to in the name of their faith. Fascinating.

britt_brooke I have this book, but haven't read it yet. These Fundamentalist religious sects are bats. It awful what these folks go through. 7y
EliNeedsMoreShelves @britt_brooke I became interested in this particular sect after becoming friends with one of the daughters of one of the LeBaron brothers. The crap these women have lived through is stunning. 7y
britt_brooke @EliNeedsMoreShelves Oh wow, how interesting! The only book so far that I've read about the LeBaron group is The Sound of Gravel. Prior to that I had only read books on the sect in Short Creek and the Jeffs lunatics. It's all fascinating, yet so damned horrible. It boggles my mind that these groups exist. 7y
EliNeedsMoreShelves @britt_brooke yes, I've read The Sound of Gravel, as well as a couple of books about the Jessop family. My friend, Anna Lebaron, also has published a book which came out last year - The Polygamist's Daughter. It's hard to believe, yet knowing how little contact they are allowed with the outside world, I can kinda understand how they are able to persist. 7y
britt_brooke @EliNeedsMoreShelves Her book is in my TBR! 7y

This book was so engrossing & kept me up reading much later than I should have. Irene became the 2nd wife of Verlan LeBron in 1953. The 28 years of their marriage were incredibly difficult and heartbreaking. During those years she bore him 13 children and watched him marry several more women. When I hear of plural wives, I always wonder, "why do they stay?" This book answers that question & tells what living "The Principle" is really like.

Sasha728 There is more profanity in this book than I usually read. Most of it is used when she is arguing with Verlan about what he's asking her to endure or about a promise he's broken. 7y
