What's Bred in the Bone
What's Bred in the Bone | Robertson Davies
8 posts | 12 read | 11 to read
Called an altogether remarkable creation, his most accomplished novel to date (The New York Times), What's Bred in the Bone is the second brilliant novel in Robertson Davies The Cornish Trilogy. Available as an eBook for the first time.Francis Cornish was always good at keeping secrets. From the well-hidden family secret of his childhood to his mysterious encounters with a small-town embalmer, a master art restorer, a Bavarian countess, and various masters of espionage, the events in Franciss life were not always what they seemed. In this wonderfully ingenious portrait of an art expert and collector of international renown, Robertson Davies has created a spellbinding tale of artistic triumph and heroic deceit. It is a tale told in stylish, elegant prose, endowed with lavish portions of Davies wit and wisdom. Daviess make-believe universe has the appeal of a mystics vision Whats Bred in the Bone is vintage Davies. The Globe and Mail

#HappyCanadaDay all!
Thanks for the tag @batsy
1. Tagged - discovered this author when mentioned in an interview by #2
2. Margaret Atwood
3. I don't know too many Canadian foods, but I'll echo maple syrup and salmon that others said. I visited Montreal last year and loved the cafes- it was there I discovered you can get decafe espresso. So I know decafe americanos aren't Canadian but in my head they remain a Montreal delicacy 😅
@KVanRead

Billypar Tagging @Centique if you want to join in 4y
Josee.lit.a.lu.et.lira ?? Décaf Américano also ? Did not know it was a MTL thing ? 4y
Billypar @Josee.a.lu.lit.et.lira Ha, I know who knew right? 😁 4y

batsy I have Fifth Business by Robertson Davies thanks to @merelybookish and I really should get to it! He's been on my radar for ever so long. 4y
Billypar @batsy Yeah, that one is on my TBR as well. Though I have to answer the eternal question of, do I finish the trilogy that I already started first, or go rogue? 4y
KVanRead @Billypar Davies is a Canadian institution! And I don‘t know about decaf americanos, but Montréal definitely has the best coffee in Canada. Thanks for playing! 4y
Billypar @KVanRead That's easy to believe about Montreal based on my trip. Thanks for organizing this giveaway/Canadian tribute! 4y
Cathythoughts Loved your answers 👍🏻❤️ 4y
LeahBergen Good ol‘ Robertson Davies. 👏🏻 4y
Centique Thanks Vinnie. I will put my thinking cap on! I haven‘t read Robertson Davies yet either @batsy and I think I have the same book on my shelf 😋 4y
Billypar @Cathythoughts Thanks 🙂 I need to read more Canadian lit- a good day for expanding the TBR. 4y
Billypar @LeahBergen This is the only one I've read of his but it won't be my last! 4y
Billypar @Centique Looking forward to seeing your choices! 🇨🇦 4y
CarolynM Tagged book is a favourite of mine. I had completely forgotten Davies was Canadian 🙄 4y
Billypar @CarolynM I'm surprised he's not read more widely - he's often missing from the shelves in U.S. bookstores. 4y

Pickpick

Brilliant examination of the forces that shape the destiny of a famed art collector who may or may not have forged paintings. It's a story on the scale of Dickens but with the sharp wit of someone like Wilde: there are some great gems of dark comedy sprinkled throughout. I really loved how it considered artistic expertise, and big questions about the significance of art in one's life. I can't wait to read more Davies @CarolynM !

saresmoore Great review! 5y
CarolynM Glad you enjoyed it. I think it's his best. 5y
Billypar @saresmoore Thanks! ☺️ 5y

Billypar @CarolynM I think I'll try The Rebel Angels next - didn't realize before it was the first of the trilogy. 5y
batsy Scale of Dickens but the sharp wit of Wilde! Sounds pretty fab. 5y
LeahBergen I really need to be a better 🇨🇦 and read more Robertson Davies! 😬 5y
Billypar @batsy I know- two literary heavy-hitters to use as comparisons. Needless to say, I was impressed! 5y
Billypar @LeahBergen I picked it up when I visited Kingston in a shop that had a wide selection of his works. I would have picked up more if I knew how good he was! 5y

I was reading this on the subway the other day and I noticed this little boy was staring at the cover, captivated. He then starts excitedly trying to get his dad's attention: "He's got no head! Dad.... Dad- look! He's painting himself but he has no head. How can he see what he's painting with no head?" ?
@CarolynM maybe as an adult he'll pick it up in a bookshop and be drawn to it without quite knowing why?

saresmoore Amazing! 😆 5y
Cinfhen I love the excitement of kids! It is a very intriguing cover 5y

LeahBergen That‘s so great! 😆 5y
CarolynM Lovely idea. I hope it comes to pass. Are you enjoying the book? 5y
Billypar @CarolynM I'm only about a quarter of the way through, but I'm loving it. Davies' humor is exactly my style- I've been cracking up at so many moments already. The running celestial commentary is a nice extra dimension too. I can't wait to see where it goes. 5y
CarolynM Good to know🙂It's a favourite of mine. There's such a lot in it. 5y
kspenmoll What a great story! That he even noticed the cover...his excitement refreshing! 5y
Billypar @kspenmoll I'm not great with guessing ages, but I think he wasn't more than 3 or 4. Very perceptive! 5y

Nearly forgot to post my #bookhaul from the used bookshop, Wayfarer Books, that I visited on a trip to Kingston, Ontario last weekend. The three authors of the novels are all firsts for me, as are most of the poets in the anthology, so looking forward to trying these 😀

CarolynM What's Bred in the Bone is a brilliant novel - one of the best I've ever read. Hope you enjoy it. 6y
Cathythoughts Howard‘s End ... I really want to read this one 6y
Billypar @CarolynM Ooh...good to know! I think Atwood put Davies on my radar when she was talking about her favorite fellow Canadian writers in an interview. 6y
Billypar @Cathythoughts It's a little out of my reading wheelhouse, but someone recommended I read it before Zadie Smith's On Beauty, so that's always good motivation to read what I might not otherwise. 6y
