The Abundance
The Abundance: Narrative Essays Old and New | Annie Dillard
In recognition of the Pulitzer Prize-winning authors long and lauded career as a master essayist, a landmark collection, including her most beloved pieces and some rarely seen work, rigorously curated by the author herself.A writer who never seems tired, who has never plodded her way through a page or sentence, Dillard can only be enjoyed by a wide-awake reader, warns Geoff Dyer in his introduction to this stellar collection. Carefully culled from her past work,The Abundanceis quintessential Annie Dillard, delivered in her fierce and undeniably singular voice, filled with fascinating detail and metaphysical fact. The pieces within will exhilarate both admiring fans and a new generation of readers, having been re-framed and re-hung, with fresh editing and reordering by the author, to situate these now seminal works within her larger canon. The Abundancereminds us that Dillards brand of novelized nonfiction pioneered the form long before it came to be widely appreciated. Intense, vivid, and fearless, her work endows the true and seemingly ordinary aspects of lifea commuter chases snowball-throwing children through neighborhood streets, a teenager memorizes Rimbauds poetrywith beauty and irony, inviting readers onto sweeping landscapes, to join her in exploring the complexities of time and death, with a sense of humor: on one page, an eagle falls from the sky with a weasel attached to its throat; on another, a man walks into a bar.Reminding us of the indelible contributions of this formative figure in contemporary nonfiction,The Abundanceexquisitely showcases Annie Dillards enigmatic, enduring genius, as Dillard herself wishes it to be marked.

#AboutAugust Day 13: There is an #abundance of books on the floor right now - seems like a yearly thing for us to move. Not out of the UAE, but to a bigger place within our city that is landed, which is all kinds of awesome, but yes, pretty stressful.

marleed Good luck on your move. Even moving locally in 2020 has to be a challenge. 4y

You leave the sleeping shore deliberately; you shed your dusty clothes, pick your barefoot way over the high, slippery rocks, hold your breath, choose your footing, and step into the waterfall. The hard water pelts your skull, bangs in bits in your shoulders and arms. ... Can you breathe here? Here where the force is greatest and only the strength of your neck holds the river out of your face?

An anthology of essays sourced from her previous books, I found this a mixed bag. I loved the pieces where she pretty much says 'Come for a walk!' and 'Look!' and then points out something that stops me in my tracks. Other pieces were dull or irritating: noisy. I think she's best read in small doses. At times she inspired wonder, at others provoked me to say, 'For the love of God, Annie, give the tambourine a rest, I'm trying to find some peace!'

Zelma 😂 great review. 5y

Had a day out in Bristol yesterday. Naturally, that included an hour in Waterstones! It's a behemoth of a bookseller, I know, but I am fond of Waterstones: it's one of the few public places where I feel entirely at ease.
@LauraBeth You might want to check these out for your Nature list. ❤

LauraBeth Look at that beautiful cover for H Is For Hawk! 😍 Thanks for sharing - I only had Pilgrim at Tinker Creek. So this Dillard and Smyth are new to me. I‘ll try and post later what I have so far 6y
Reviewsbylola You picked up some gorgeous books! 6y
quietlycuriouskate @LauraBeth Isn't it gorgeous? I'd have bought it for the cover even if it hadn't already been on my wishlist. The Smyth was already on my list, too, but the Dillard was a total impulse buy. I've not read her before. 6y

quietlycuriouskate @Reviewsbylola Indeed I did! There were several others I left behind, though. It's like choosing from a litter of kittens: I want to go back and bring them all home! 😊 6y
erzascarletbookgasm The H Is For Hawk cover is 💙 6y
Cathythoughts I like our Waterstones too. 👍🏻 I haven‘t ever ordered on line . I like the shop & the browsing & the picking 🤔.. I like going to town & the anticipation of buying a new book 💫💕💕💕magic 6y
Linsy I‘ve always wanted to go there. I love that edition of H is for Hawk! It‘s one of my favorite audiobooks of all time. I could listen to her talk for hours!! (edited) 6y

Exploring Stillwater, MN again but this time with books in hand and no real agenda. Andy is obsessed with the Wise Man's Fear right now so he's actually the one pushing me to stop and read. And I'm in a mini reading slump right now so working my way through this Dillard collection ❤️

Wow! This collection from masterful essayist Annie Dillard is beautiful, crisp, and very inspiring to me as a writer. The prose, the metaphors, the way she views things - nature, especially - is absolutely breathtaking. If you're a writer, this is a must read!

GatheringBooks Totally agree. Truly enjoyed this reading experience - my first Dillard book. 7y

Bookworm83 I'm sorry this has nothing to do with your post, but where is the "blur" feature on this most recent update? I can't find it for the life of me! (edited) 7y
annahenke @Bookworm83 I think the same place as before? It's one of the main options when you scroll over from filter, etc. 😊 7y

Clare-Dragonfly @Bookworm83 I have a "focus" option--it's different from the old "blur" in that you can focus on a rectangular or circular section instead of coloring in, but seems to work. I'm on iOS. 7y

#libfaves#16 #2 A child's sense of wonder is captured in these essays. Through the author's eyes, the world is a foreign, alien place. We can apply her narrow vision to view ourselves in these new and strange roles. We find the unique persistence of nature and discover how we can incorporate these traits into the everyday. We are transported by her voice. It is a wonderful opportunity to see the world anew.

So ever grateful that this book found me when it did. Books do come to a reader at the exact perfect time. Find this book. Read it. It heals the tired spirit.

annahenke I'm reading this right now. It's so beautiful! 7y
GatheringBooks @annahenke truly enjoyed this book. and to think i didn't even know about annie dillard's work. 7y
annahenke I was familiar with some of essays due to a memoir class in college. This collection is truly excellent and I'm so glad I dived deeper! 7y
GatheringBooks @annahenke i particularly enjoyed the essays on reading and writing. i am tempted to pick up the original titles from which they have been drawn from. i imagine that dillard must be a very inspiring professor herself. 7y

I always feel that books find me at the perfect time. The significance is for people. No people; no significance. And one's worth is the same as another's, regardless of that person's being. It is not Orwell's "All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others." Inalienable right to life. That is what is true. The fabric of what makes us human. Take that away, and what have you got left? Nothing.

Annie Dillard is a master! I was first introduced to her in a memoir class and am still in awe of her skill. I'm going to read this one slowly, savoring one essay at a time. This quote is from "Total Eclipse."

LitHousewife I need to read Annie Dillard. We're both Hollins grads. It feels disloyal that I haven't. 7y

In college, some girl I barely knew let me borrow her copy of "Pilgrim at Tinker Creek" and then we were best friends until graduation. Sometimes you need someone to recommend something you would never pick up for yourself.... In any case, I'm adoring this book.

Hugoreads "Pilgrim..." has long been one of my favorite books. I will definitely be getting this collection. 8y
