A quiet coming of age story that kept feeling like it was going to be incredibly special but never quite got there for me.

squirrelbrain Yes, it just kind of faded out. Although I suppose it‘s meant to be the first of four, so maybe that‘s why. 12h

We follow Istvan from his 15 yrs, first in Hungary then later in London with a short stop in Germany. Istvan is a man that just go with the flow and doesn‘t make any decisions in his own life.

The novel also read more like a series of stories focusing on different part of his life, but missing big events like is marriage day and birth of a child.

Ruthiella I feel like the matter of fact tone of this is going to appeal to me. 13h
Leniverse I am very uncertain about this one 🤔 It doesn't really appeal to me, but it's getting good reviews so... maybe? 12h

I enjoyed this novel and never found it predictable. It was much more than I thought it would be in the end. I did have trouble picking it up. 4 🌟

BarbaraBB I‘ll temper my expectations! 2d
charl08 Yeah, I wasn't overwhelmed either. I've only read 2 so far, hoping for better in the list. 2d
ChaoticMissAdventures I keep hearing people say the beginning is good but the end feels too expanded to go into a series, did you find this? I am sad it was one of my most looked forward to on the list 2d

TheKidUpstairs @ChaoticMissAdventures I loved this one. And I felt it told the story of this one important time in his life, but left it open as to what the future may hold for him. For me, it reads well on its own but also leaves room for the other books to show other times in his life (if that is how they go, I don't know what Aw plans for the rest). 1d
Leniverse This one is up next on audio for me. A few hours left in my current audiobook first. This one seems short, which I am really in the mood for now, so that's good 😅 1d
Graywacke I‘m reading it now. Early on. Still trying to find some traction between book and brain. 1d

A Ukrainian woman seeking to find snails before they become extinct & two sisters participating in the bridal tourism industry meet up & become embroiled in a journey with 13 men they‘ve abducted & placed in their mobile van. In the middle of the story things change, the Russian invasion begins, and the author begins to speak of her ancestry and her feelings about the invasion. Then we return to the story already in progress. A five star read.

Ruthiella I think this is the longlist title I am most interested in. Sounds so weird in a good way. 2d
Suet624 @Ruthiella I really liked the humor as well as the weirdness. And I wish more people would read the parts about the war. (edited) 2d

It‘s my lunch break and i‘m in a phone room in my office, about to start this book. I finished Love Forms this morning. #booker #Booker2025

Hooked_on_books I love the cover of this one 3d
Graywacke @Hooked_on_books it‘s much nicer looking than that phone room. ☺️ I like the cover too! 3d

I like books that have little or no plot if the writing is good and the characters interesting. Here the prose is good, but focussed on the minutae, the characters interesting but not allowed to shine. The pace is glacial. And the ending is 🤷🏻‍♀️🫤
I'm left feeling like I've been teased with bits and pieces of a good story, but instead of filling in the gaps Miller has given in to a Knausgardian impulse to describe how people brush their teeth.

Tamra Shoot. This is the only one on the long list I was tempted by. 5d
Leniverse @Tamra A lot of people seem to like it. There were parts that worked well for me, but just not as a whole. But I also expected it to be more a story of two households isolated in an unusually harsh winter, but that was a really small part. It was just.... People being people. While it happens to be winter. 5d

Tamra @Leniverse 😒 Yes, I expected the setting to play more of a role. 5d
Leniverse @Tamra I mean, it definitely wouldn't have been the same book if it was set in summer 😂 But I'm from Norway and this book just didn't rate all that high as I measure the bleak isolation of a harsh winter. 5d
RaeLovesToRead The Europa edition has such a pretty cover 😍 But it's not out until November. I'm about to brush my teeth if you want the deets just let me know and I can send you a lengthy description. Might add in some Ducks, Newburyport style ponderings if you are lucky 🤣🤣 5d
BarbaraBB That‘s too bad. I bought it too and now it seems like it‘s going to be a looong boring read 5d
bibliothecarivs I haven't keep up on the Booker list this year and would have sworn from the cover design that book was several decades older than it is. 5d
Leniverse @bibliothecarivs I think that's intentional, as the book is set in the early 1960s! 5d
Leniverse @RaeLovesToRead I'll pass, thanks 😂 5d
Leniverse @BarbaraBB Hopefully you will enjoy it! Seems like a marmite book. 5d

Morning all. I‘m in a bit of a book hangover, as I adored Audition by Katie Kitamura. So it‘s hard getting into another book. But this one has a lovely opening. And i‘ll spend part of my morning here.

I‘m on chapter 3. Everyone seems bewildered trying to understand this one. Little 🧠 primed. #booker #Booker2025

My 2nd from the #Booker longlist

Goodness, I‘m still thinking about this. Our main character, István, fascinates without saying anything. A book of spare prose, raging underneath. I was sucked in, raced through its 350 spare pages in 4 days. You love István, and he‘s awful, and does awful stuff. But suffers awful stuff too without ever a complaint. Just saying, “ok”. And not much else. I‘ll leaven the masculinity stuff off this mini review. ?

BarbaraBB Fascinating review! I will read it soon! 2w
Graywacke @BarbaraBB oh, yay! Tag me! 2w

squirrelbrain It‘s so odd that we love him, isn‘t it?! Very clever of the author. 2w
Graywacke @squirrelbrain i guess we sympathize with the point of view we‘re given. 🙂 (Im thinking of the tv series Dexter) But still it‘s odd. He would get accused of something, accurately, and my first thought was to be offended for him and ready to defend him. ☺️ 2w
Chelsea.Poole Nice review! I just finished this today and I agree. How does the author do it?? 2w
Graywacke @Chelsea.Poole thanks! Is your mind churning? 🙂 I don‘t know how he does it. Are you reading the longlist? 2w
Chelsea.Poole @Graywacke kinda sorta reading it…? I just finished The South and started Universality today. So far, more a fan of the former than the latter of those two. But I have several other commitments to get to that will probably derail further reading of the longlist. I‘m an easily distracted reader! 2w
Graywacke @Chelsea.Poole well, if you need longlist encouragement, let me know! 🙂 I can tag you on my posts. I have a few I will read before I read The South. And amazon seems to be having troubles locating a copy of Universality for me. 😐 But it‘s short. 2w
