Knowing how much Dickens loved these stories, knowing how much of himself he put into Scrooge really helps me to humanize the old codger and find empathy for him. Also he shows so much imagination! Which means he has the capacity to imagine a better self. #ChristmasCarolReread #ChristmasCarolBuddyRead

LeahBergen My opinion of Scrooge changed so much after seeing him as a child, reading his beloved books in solitude. 💔 6y
KVanRead @LeahBergen Yes! 😢 And I know from other reading that‘s part of what Dickens experienced and books were a lifeline for him as they have been at times for me. 6y

“The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigor then?” ...in case you were wondering, Scrooge was not advocating more gym time for the poor.😱 Always saddens me to know Dickens became very Scroogey about the penal system later in life. #FootnoteGeek #ChristmasCarolBuddyRead #ChristmasCarolReread

KVanRead @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Hahaha! You are totally cracking me up!😂 6y

#FootnoteGeek back and surprised to learn she‘s misunderstood the meaning of this word all her life...thought it had to do with dead bodies not lawyers!😳 #ATaleofTwoCities #vocabulary

obviateit It comes from the Latin "forensis", meaning in open court or in public. Which explains why competitive speaking and acting is called forensics, but I'm still not sure what the connection is to dead bodies. Maybe someone else knows why that's called forensics too. ? 6y
obviateit Oh, I googled it. It morphed over time into "pertaining to legal trials". So forensic science is science pertaining to legal trials. That makes sense. ? 6y
KVanRead @obviateit Interesting! I just recently heard the public speaking term from the high school debating coach but failed to make the connection. I think the dead bodies bit must be from forensic evidence as in the evidence on said bodies that is ‘suitable for court.‘ 6y
See All 7 Comments
KVanRead @obviateit Just Read your second comment. Yes! That makes sense. 6y
obviateit @KVanRead yes! You got there much quicker than I did 😂. I'm going to blame new baby foggy brain. I knew the public speaking part because I did Forensics in high school. It was a lot of fun, and we liked to joke about how it wasn't just for dead people. 6y
KVanRead @obviateit Haha! Good one! I did it in college and somehow never came across that word. We just called it Debate Team. Congrats on the new 👶!! 6y

According to the footnotes, in #HardTimes Signor Jupe's hat with "a pigtail bolt upright (an obtrusive phallic symbol)" was a popular mummers' costume and survived into our times in the form of Sunny Jim of Force Wheat Flakes fame. The young Dickens wrote so much he couldn't get life insurance: "the 'Board' seemed disposed to think I work too much." A great example of Malcolm Gladwell's 10,000 hour rule. Planning to use this on the kids when they complain about homework ? #OliverTwist

BB1958 My kids now roll their eyes when i tell them that the two best ways to become good writers are to read good writers and write in a regular basis. The former allows you to see how the best do it, the latter allows you to develop your own skills. No substitute for either. 7y

Couldn't agree more here with John Forster, Dickens biographer. The part of #PickwickPapers set in the Fleet Prison is by far my favorite so far. Leave it to Dickens to take what was intended to be a comic, farcical look at the genteel sporting life and use it to shine a light on the plight of those confined to debtors prison. #footnotegeek

"'Having your likeness taken, sir,...We're capital hands at likenesses here. Take 'em in no time and always exact.'" What an interesting notion that all the prison turnkeys would take Pickwick's likeness by memorizing his looks, taking "a good long view of him" and studying his "features with most intent and thoughtful faces." One of those striking, surprising, and masterfully written little scenes that Dickens is so good at. #PickwickPapers
