This is my #bookgiftedtoyou pick for #booked2019. It was given to me by one of my best friend. She spoke so highly of it that I was too scared to read it for a couple of years. I'm pleased I've finally read it. I really enjoyed it. It's a beautifully-told but horrible story.
This prompt was hard for me - I either buy my own books or borrow them from the library.

Some of our most beloved characters are the most flawed... Tyrion Lannister certainly comes to mind.
So does Pip from Dickens, Libby Day from the @thegillianflynn novel Dark Places.
But why do we love them so much? Is it because they are more relatable or because we are given the gift of urging them to become whole as we read?🌱.

This is a beautiful story that goes to some very dark places and I don‘t know if I can recommend it to anyone unless you have a lot of resilience! I‘ll explain how it fits the prompt under a spoiler tag in the comments.
Civil war on an island. The last white man left opens the school . He reads Great Expectations to the kids as a way to transport them off the island and allows them to get away, at least in their mind, from the dangers all around.
I wouldn‘t recommend this to everyone, as the second half is difficult . I think this is one of those that you‘d like it or hate it. I‘m in the first camp.
..these losses cannot take our minds and our imaginations....
“Mr Watts had given us kids another piece of the world. I found I could go back to it as often as I liked. What‘s more, I could pick up any moment in the story” . Beautiful little book about the power of one man, a book , and how he helped transport the kids from a place of fear and danger to a completely new world. All by opening a book.
Currently reading #greatexpectations for #litsyclassics and I‘m having quite a hard time. I‘m about 30% through and I hate Pip so much. He‘s such an unthankful, arrogant, judgemental, little prick. I know he had a hard childhood and he‘s got a crush on Estella but that‘s no reason to constantly insult Joe and Biddy and feel superior just because now he has “great expectations”. Money doesn‘t make you a good person and Pip is proof so far.
