The End of Everything
The End of Everything: A Novel | Megan Abbott
25 posts | 60 read | 52 to read
Thirteen-year old Lizzie Hood and her next door neighbor Evie Verver are inseparable. They are best friends who swap bathing suits and field-hockey sticks, and share everything that's happened to them. Together they live in the shadow of Evie's glamorous older sister Dusty, who provides a window on the exotic, intoxicating possibilities of their own teenage horizons. To Lizzie, the Verver household, presided over by Evie's big-hearted father, is the world's most perfect place. And then, one afternoon, Evie disappears. The only clue: a maroon sedan Lizzie spotted driving past the two girls earlier in the day. As a rabid, giddy panic spreads through the Midwestern suburban community, everyone looks to Lizzie for answers. Was Evie unhappy, troubled, upset? Had she mentioned being followed? Would she have gotten into the car of a stranger? Lizzie takes up her own furtive pursuit of the truth, prowling nights through backyards, peering through windows, pushing herself to the dark center of Evie's world. Haunted by dreams of her lost friend and titillated by her own new power at the center of the disappearance, Lizzie uncovers secrets and lies that make her wonder if she knew her best friend at all.

amateur joyce carol oates. with lines so flowery it's shameful. the desired content is there. childhood friendship, obsession, girly mystique.

once the abducted kid returns, things get wild. jelly sandals in the locker room shower; sleepovers, tracing letters on skin; taboo, metaphysical affairs with no tummy touching. last third of this book hits the spot.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Another great book by Megan Abbott. I‘ve read all of her books except one and they all show how difficult it is to be a kid/teen. This one explores how the men in young girls‘ lives can warp girls‘ understanding of love. It‘s a really powerful story. I recommend. This was my book No 25 for #bookspinbingo

A book with water on the cover

Between a Pick & So-so
I‘m a devotee of Megan Abbott by now. But this one doesn‘t have quite the same payoff as others. The eerie sense of dread - the feeling like you‘re on the verge of seeing something you can‘t un-see - the devotion & the tension that exists between girls - all that is there. It just doesn‘t pack the wallop I‘m used to from her.
Still, not a bad way to spend some time.

When both are 13, Lizzie‘s best friend Evie goes missing. Initially, this book moved a bit slowly for me, but as revelations come to light, is picks up the pace and gets more disturbing, exploring jealousy, cruelty, anger, and more. I like how Abbott gets at the parts of people that are uncomfortable. She‘s a great writer.

BarbaraBB Are those your shelves? 😍 4y
Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB Yes, that‘s 2/3 of my fiction shelves (some of the outfacing books are NF). Nonfiction is in another room. 😬 (edited) 4y

Wanted a quick, one sitting read for tonight. Don‘t think I‘m the target audience for this though. Found it creepy in that teenager/creepy middle aged man way....can‘t say I enjoyed it and just cringed most of my way through it.
So-so because it was a well written story I just didn‘t like it!

UGH. This is the third Abbott book I've read and she never disappoints. It's so tense and disturbing and compelling. I read it in two sittings.

Excellent YA. I don't think I'd call it a straight mystery. Definitely coming of age novel. A story of two best friends and the summer when one is abducted. Excellent portrayal of friendship, loneliness, and that vague longing of teenage girls.

I have been doing a lot of thinking today about the last eight years, and how much I will miss Barack Obama, who always defined himself as a writer first and a politician second. And a man who believes, passionately, in the power of fiction. So here are 8 fiction books I read over the last 8 years that are among those that meant the very most - that shaped who I am now in one way or another. What are yours? Use #8for8 !

saresmoore Very cool. 7y
Brenley Awesome! I definitely will say I'm gonna miss this literary president. 7y

This book kind of gave me the Heebie Jeebies... And not the fun kind. There was an intermingling of sexual confusion, sexual assault and the sort of love only a 13 year old girl understands. It gave me a bad feeling in my tummy. That may have been the point, but yuck.

I had a lot of #headlesscovers on my kindle, but not so many in hard copy. I also noticed almost all Elin Hilderbrand novels are headless. Hmmm. Wonder what that says? #photoadaynov16 @RealLifeReading

Well, after three days of mental anguish, physical manifestations of sorrow including vomiting, migraines, uncontrollable trembling, and inability to sleep, I have come for refuge in the pages of books, friends always. And I've come for refuge in the words of my fellow bibliophiles. This community is everything right now. ✌🏻✌🏼✌🏽✌🏾✌🏿

I picked up some books today! This is actually me showing restraint. I also put in an order online with B&N. They're having a 3 for $30 sale on some great YA hardcover books; I couldn't resist!

I found a fun coloring pad of woodland critters and I added a Teddy Funko POP vinyl figure to my Bob's Burgers set. Now I just need Gene as Beefsquatch and Buttloose Tina for the set to be complete. 😄

Megabooks Mosquitoland is great! I can't wait for his new one! 8y

Oh my god, you guys. I have had this book on my coffee table since literally May (I, uh, might have some fines) and finally got around to starting it this morning. I'm already done. It's intense and horrible and incredible and will not let you go until it's done and you keep saying no, no, she's thirteen! But it's so wonderful and explores power and vulnerability so well and I loved it.

This book was unsettling. I liked it, it's fast paced and written very well, the language is very interesting and beautiful at times. Looking through my recent history, I need to get away from kidnapping stories for awhile
