Andrew Smith is the Kurt Vonnegut of YA . . . [Smiths novels] are the freshest, richest, and weirdest books to hit the YA world in years. Entertainment Weekly Skillfully blending multiple story strands that transcend time and place, award-winning Grasshopper Jungle author Andrew Smith chronicles the story of Ariel, a refugee who is the sole survivor of an attack on his small village. Now living with an adoptive family in Sunday, West Virginia, Ariel's story is juxtaposed against those of a schizophrenic bomber and the diaries of a failed arctic expedition from the late nineteenth century . . . and a depressed, bionic reincarnated crow. From the Hardcover edition.

I liked this book, and I didn‘t. It‘s a conundrum, because it was weird. Science experiments, corrupt systems, a melting man (arguably the weirdest and coolest part), a talking (and rather) suicidal crow, and non-troublesome teenagers stuck in an intense camp for troublesome boys. Audiobook read really well. I switched back and forth with the hardcover. Worth a read, but not a favorite. #yabooks

Lazy morning with munster #cat and a #yabook. Cone is due to some almost-cleared acne that he couldn‘t stop scratching. He‘s a cold boy who needed a nest that I was happy to provide.

When Ariel town is smoked out he lives because he fell asleep in a refrigerator. The story goes back and forth from him being in camp with his "foster" brother and his life before. There is also little stories thrown in the book. This is a story that needs your undivided attention so you get what's going on. I love the humor in this book but also the seriousness this book tells about children in war, camps and etc.

#OctoberXFiles Day 11: This book has 4 ongoing storylines that seem to be vastly different from each other, including one about a #PsychoKiller. There is literary wordsmithing here, regardless of whether the reader feels uncomfortable with the themes that are just dealt with such head-on, brazen, fearless manner; and all the while, the narrator is left bleeding in the gutter carrying his fistful of dirt. Featuring a talking crow, a genetic engineering subplot and the worlds weirdest summer camp, this book is young adult lit at its finest. Absolutely loved it. #ya

It took a wee bit for me to get into the story. Maybe because of the back and forth in time and POVs. But I liked it in the end.

After @Ange44 and I looked at our overwhelming "not read" stacks we made a pact to make #tbr stacks of 10 each with very strict rules in place. Here is mine.

LeahBergen I've heard such good things about Birdie. 8y
Kosugi @LeahBergen I've been looking forward to it for a bit and recently scored it at a thrift store trip. 8y

It didn't get the same attention as his Grasshopper Jungle, but The Alex Crow is also creative and exciting. #underrated #augustphotochallenge @TheSpinecrackersBookClub
