White Lady: A British Historical Mystery
White Lady: A British Historical Mystery | Jacqueline Winspear

A must-read mystery to curl up with this fallInstant New York Times and National Bestseller"A triumph. . . . Winspear creates in Elinor White (the 'White Lady'), a complex, endearing, achingly flawed hero. This is both fast-paced and thoughtful, bold and nuanced, a thriller that is thrillingly human. I loved it." --Louise PennyThe White Lady introduces yet another extraordinary heroine from Jacqueline Winspear, creator of the best-selling Maisie Dobbs series. This heart-stopping novel, set in Post WWII Britain in 1947, follows the coming of age and maturity of former wartime operative Elinor White--veteran of two wars, trained killer, protective of her anonymity--when she is drawn back into the world of menace she has been desperate to leave behind.A reluctant ex-spy with demons of her own, Elinor finds herself facing down one of the most dangerous organized crime gangs in London, ultimately exposing corruption from Scotland Yard to the highest levels of government. The private, quiet "Miss White" as Elinor is known, lives in a village in rural Kent, England, and to her fellow villagers seems something of an enigma. Well she might, as Elinor occupies a "grace and favor" property, a rare privilege offered to faithful servants of the Crown for services to the nation. But the residents of Shacklehurst have no way of knowing how dangerous Elinor's war work had been, or that their mysterious neighbor is haunted by her past.It will take Susie, the child of a young farmworker, Jim Mackie and his wife, Rose, to break through Miss White's icy demeanor--but Jim has something in common with Elinor. He, too, is desperate to escape his past. When the powerful Mackie crime family demands a return of their prodigal son for an important job, Elinor assumes the task of protecting her neighbors, especially the bright-eyed Susie. Yet in her quest to uncover the truth behind the family's pursuit of Jim, Elinor unwittingly sets out on a treacherous path--yet it is one that leads to her freedom.

#CloakandDaggerChristmas Prompt: Do They Know It‘s Christmas? - read a mystery set on a different continent from the one you live on

Good historical mystery/thriller. Winspear gives us another remarkable heroine in ex-spy Elinor White. Set in 1947 with flashbacks to WWI and WWII. I‘ve read and enjoyed the first few in her Maisie Dobbs series. Might need to get back to those soon.

batsy I enjoyed the first few of the Maisie Dobbs books, too. But got distracted by other books and didn't go back to it 🙈 5mo
Tamra @batsy me too! 5mo
batsy @Tamra Just too many books! 🙃 5mo
Ruthiella I‘ve not yet tried the Maisie Dobbs books so this might be a good place to start with Winspear. Less commitment! 😆 5mo

I have read in total 18 books now by Jacqueline Winspear and I have loved them ALL! This book was no different in the beautiful writing and wonderful main character. You follow Elinor as she is pulled into both WWI as a 14yr old then later in WWII in her upper 30‘s. You see the effect that life had on her life and what drives her to be the woman she is. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

1. My youngest daughter (5th grade) started last Thursday 8/10. My oldest is going to be a sophomore in college she will start 8/21.
2. My current book The White Lady has school setting in it, as part of it was when she went to school then as she became a professor herself. Though it‘s not the main setting in the story.

Given the times we are in White is the last name of the main character. The book bounces from WWII to after the war. Good story to remind us of the consequences of relying on assumptions.

Winspear‘s strength is her capacious knowledge of the World Wars, which is on display in her latest. Here, we have a retired spy/assassin who is trying to build a life away from the service. Try as she might, she cannot avoid getting involved with other humans, another thing that is common on Winspear‘s work. She has an uncanny way of writing characters who think they want to be alone but who end up forging important and long-lasting friendships.
