Why Read? | Mark Edmundson
9 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 2 to read
In this important book, acclaimed author Mark Edmundson reconceives the value and promise of reading. He enjoins educators to stop offering up literature as facile entertainment and instead teach students to read in a way that can change their lives for the better. At once controversial and inspiring, this is a groundbreaking book written with the elegance and power to change the way we teach and read. 📚 I read fiction to escape, not always to a nicer place, but to see new worlds. I read non-fiction to learn more about the world I'm in.
📚 My mother inspired me to read because she gave me the freedom to find my own taste in books, not push one kind or another like schools do/did.
📚 Every chance I get, usually early morning or late at night, less distractions.
Thanks for the tag @Monica5

TheKidUpstairs I love early morning reading, before everyone else wakes up. Just me, my book, and a cup of tea. 2y

Why do YOU read, Littens?

Adventures-of-a-French-Reader Great question! Personally, learning & discovering things relax me, that's why I love reading, it's such a fun way to expand my knowledge, to experience things through other people's perspectives, and thus to question my own experiences. 5y
CouronneDhiver For relaxation. For imagination. For stimulation ... because my mind goes miles a minute if it‘s not well occupied 5y

For those who don't know, I have a small list of mental illnesses that makes my day to day life very difficult. Reading is not only my passion but my outlet as well. It helps me to focus and keeps my mind occupied.

Why do you read? 😃

BethM Escapism and enjoyment. It can also really help with my anxiety, which I guess is escapism 😜 5y
jmofo I love to play in my mind, I love to learn and question. But, I also feel quite isolated from people in life, especially when I was growing up andJames Baldwin says it very well: You think your pain and your heartbreak are unprecedented in the history of the world, but then you read. It was books that taught me that the things that tormented me most were the very things that connected me with all the people who were alive, who had ever been alive. (edited) 5y
Bklover Reading helps me to connect with the world as well as escape from it, if that makes any sense at all. 5y

JanuarieTimewalker13 I‘m happier as a reader. I‘m more empathetic as a reader. I‘m never lonely as a reader. Books, have taken the worrier out of me. And unless the read is an intense thriller, they relax me thoroughly. Add coffee and cats, and It‘s nirvana📚❤️ 5y
Anitareads I love reading because I can be anywhere in the world while sitting at home. Reading makes me forget everyday worries and helps me deal with my anxiety. 💕 5y
Cailey_Mac I love reading because it helps take me out of my life; I tend to get so stressed and anxious about things, so it helps me forget for a while 5y
speljamr To escape to other world's. To learn new things. To shut out the world around me for a while. 5y
sherryvdh Escapism mostly, and complete awe of other people's imaginations. The psychology nut in me is fascinated by what comes out of other people's minds. 5y
Shvonne To relax and enjoyment 5y
Rudis Escapism, to relax, and because I couldn‘t imagine a life without it. 5y
Dasquirt8 To get away from it all 5y
Eggbeater I have a painful illness and I am unable to work. I don't know what I'd do without books. Also, there is nothing better than a good story. 5y
toric I think people who read have more interesting personalities and they are more fun to be around. Its not the reason i read but it does help 5y
mariaku21 For total escape from my dreary 9-5 job and bills. 5y
TieDyeDude An interesting question. I've never put much thought into it. I just feel compelled to read. I'll have to sit on it... 5y
Bookworm47 To escape from everything. Life can get busy and stressful and reading helps me to relax and just have some "ME" time. 5y
jfalkens To relax, have fun and find new friends or revisit old friends 5y
BookNAround It‘s such a part of me that I‘ve never given it a thought but I think I read because I have to. I don‘t think I could function in this world if I didn‘t. Sounds melodramatic but true nonetheless. 5y
Klou I've always loved reading. I lost my passion for it during school, homework taking over my life and all, but I fell ill almost three years ago and am housebound now. Reading is one thing I can still do, and it keeps me sane😂❤ 5y
Staci I dont really have a good reason... my mom reads so i followed her when i was younger and it just took off 5y
MaleficentBookDragon I always have and I always will. It keeps me grounded and happy. I'm anxious if I don't have at least one book with me at all times. I don't do small talk very well, but get me started on books and movies and I'll talk for hours. It's my escape and my way to be social. 5y
Freespirit I have read for as long as I remember. I was always borrowing arm loads of books as a child. I finish a book and start the next. When my boys were babies I read slowly, but it's been the constant in my life and I love it ❤️ 5y
SleepyDragon Not sure. Just always have since a young age. Do I need a reason? 5y
AlaMich I was a bookworm as a kid because I was an only (and lonely) child whose mother died when I was 4. I read now because I struggle with depression and a job I hate, so it‘s very much an escape for me. 5y

I had been thinking about subscribing to Book of the Month for a while. The pricing wasn't bad, but with how tight our budget is with the upcoming wedding, I didn't want to risk it. But then on my birthday, my wonderful fiancé gifted me a six-month subscription! Can you guess what my July pick was? :)

What Proust is describing is an act of self-discovery on the part of his reader. Immersing herself in Proust, the reader may encounter aspects of herself that, while they have perhaps been in existence for a long time, have remained unnamed, undescribed, and therefore in a certain sense unknown. One might say that the reader learns the language of herself.
