Green Darkness | Anya Seton
18 posts | 15 read | 17 to read
The theme of this book is reincarnation, an attempt to show the interplaythe law of cause and effect, good and evil, among certain individual souls in two periods of English history.Green Darkness is the story of a great love, a love in which mysticism, suspense, and mystery form a web of good and evil forces that stretches from Tudor England to the England of the twentieth century. The marriage of the Englishman Richard Marsdon and his young American wife, Celia, slowly turns tragic as Richard withdraws into himself and Celia suffers a debilitating emotional breakdown. A wise mystic realizes that Celia can escape her past only by reliving it. She journeys back four hundred years to her former life as the servant girl Celia de Bohun during the reign of Edward VIand to her doomed love affair with the chaplain Stephen Marsdon. Although Celia and Stephen can't escape the horrifying consequences of their love, fate (and time) offer them another chance for redemption.

1. The tagged. It was so awful and tedious to read that I just couldn‘t pick up another book for a while.
2. Emotions, how I perceive the story, how the characters develop, the writing.
3. Yes if I‘m reading a physical book I will sometimes.

This is a co-worker suggestion, it is their favorite book.
If you have never read this, DON‘T! For the love of all things keep yourself pure from this garbage.
Long winded, rambling, pointless, too many side plots and nonsense, pages and pages of unnecessary verbose chatter. I believe I started spite reading at some point. So much of the 550+ pages could have been cut.
I could tell why the co-worker loves this book. Sounds just like her.

Texreader Most hilarious book review ever!! 1y

I‘m pretty sure I read this book many years ago and loved it! I used to drop my daughter off at school and then had about half an hour to spare before I had to be at work. I used to sit in the car and read!

I have never read Anya Seton and was pleased to find this in pretty decent shape at the book sale for $1.00
Generally, I hate stickers on books , but when they are from a great old bookstore group from Chicago I am happy to leave it on he book.

TrishB Love Seton 💕 this is an awesome copy! 5y
Leftcoastzen @TrishB One of the reasons I was looking for her books is your fondness for them! #blameitonlitsy 5y
LeahBergen I‘d leave that sticker, too! This is such a fun read. 😍 5y

Bailedbailed

Had to bail. It went on forever and was just so convoluted and corny. Took a peek at the end and it made no sense. Triggering too. #weird #gothicromance #tudors #medieval

Reviewsbylola You made the right choice. Such a bummer. I expected a lot from the author of Katherine. (edited) 5y
jillrhudy @Reviewsbylola Katherine is one of the best historical fiction novels ever. Like it‘s in my top three. A go-to for recommending to library patrons. 5y

Mehso-so

I didn‘t love this one. 😬 600 pages is a lot to invest and I found this one over written and clunky.

Celia is feuding with her husband Richard in 1968 when she goes into a catatonic state and revisits their original love affair in 1550s Tudor England. Most of the book was spent in the 1500s and the “modern day” scenario and time travel almost seemed like an after thought.

Cinfhen I‘ve just #UnStacked 😂😂 5y
Cathythoughts 600 pages 😱. Well done 👍🏻 5y
TrishB I loved this one 👍🏻 5y

LeahBergen Ah, damn. Maybe you needed to come to it as an overwrought teenager like I did. 😂😂 5y
Reviewsbylola Hahaha, you win some, you lose some! 😂 @LeahBergen 5y
jillrhudy On p. 384 and seriously thinking of bailing. I don‘t return to “the present” (1968) until p. 557. @LeahBergen @Reviewsbylola 5y
Reviewsbylola I liked that the ending provided clarity but I think it could have been more cohesive and fast paced. @jillrhudy 5y
Reviewsbylola And I wouldnt blame you for bailing. @jillrhudy (edited) 5y

#onewayoranother I‘m hoping to finish this chunkster because it counts toward #pop18 and #spooktober. I‘ve only read one Anya Seton book previously (Katherine) but I loved it. And plus also @LeahBergen gave this one five stars and that‘s motivation enough for me!

jillrhudy Gotta have it for October now. 5y
jillrhudy Found it! Check its profile now! 5y
LeahBergen @Cinfhen @emilyhaldi @Reviewsbylola I hope you like it! It‘s set in two time periods and the “modern” era is a pretty groovily cheezy 1960s. 😂 5y
Cinfhen Wait!! I just saw it‘s 672 pages 😱#pagecountphobia @LeahBergen 5y
Reviewsbylola Lolol I was wondering if you would notice that. 😂 @Cinfhen (edited) 5y

Happy National Coffee Day. I got a Mocha and a bag of fresh ground from The Coffee Barrel in Holt, Michigan. And I stopped by the Little Free Library by my doctor's office and found three Anya Seton books. Which was a good thing because it kept me out of the library store and GW.

Now off to enjoy some brew.☕️☕️☕️
