Where the Deer and the Antelope Play
Where the Deer and the Antelope Play: The Pastoral Observations of One Ignorant American Who Loves to Walk Outside | Nick Offerman
A humorous and rousing set of literal and figurative sojourns as well as a mission statement about comprehending, protecting, and truly experiencing the outdoors, fueled by three journeys undertaken by actor, humorist, and New York Times bestselling author Nick Offerman Nick Offerman has always felt a particular affection for the Land of the Freenot just for the people and their purported ideals but to the actual land itself: the bedrock, the topsoil, and everything in between that generates the health of your local watershed. In his new book, Nick takes a humorous, inspiring, and elucidating trip to America's trails, farms, and frontier to examine the people who inhabit the land, what that has meant to them and us, and to the land itself, both historically and currently. In 2018, Wendell Berry posed a question to Nick, a query that planted the seed of this book, sending Nick on two memorable journeys with palsa hiking trip to Glacier National Park with his friends Jeff Tweedy and George Saunders, as well as an extended visit to his friend James Rebanks, the author of The Shepherd's Life and English Pastoral. He followed that up with an excursion that could only have come about in 2020Nick and his wife, Megan Mullally, bought an Airstream trailer to drive across (several of) the United States. These three quests inspired some deep-ish" thinking from Nick, about the history and philosophy of our relationship with nature in our national parks, in our farming, and in our backyards; what we mean when we talk about conservation; and the importance of outdoor recreation, all subjects very close to Nick's heart. With witty, heartwarming stories and a keen insight into the human problems we all confront, this is both a ramble through and celebration of the land we all love.

Nick Offerman started signing at 11:30. Each author is scheduled for an hour. It‘s now 2:50 and he‘s still signing.

I appreciate authors who stay longer to try to sign as many as possible (and his line is still rather long).

Scochrane26 Ron Swanson! I would love to meet Offerman. 3w

Audiobook. Feel like it‘s a version of one of my faves, “A Walk in the Woods”. I like Offerman, both because of Ron Swanson & because he recognizes how legendary Ky author Wendell Berry is. This book has a lot of Berry quotes & mentions, as well as quotes from other agrarians.
What I didn‘t like— there‘s a lot of politics. Just wasn‘t into hearing about his views in this book.

Scochrane26 Would have been happy to hear about climate change/sustainability & not the rest of the politics. 1mo

EXCELLENT narration by the author on his musings about everything from farming to camping to old school being a good person and guardian of our planet. He's funny, so intelligent, and very insightful. It does get a little political but overall this was great. Definitely listen to it; his inflections make it that much more enjoyable. I think he'd be a great friend and neighbor to have.

I read this as it was recommended by our local paper. The stories are about his relationship with nature and climate change and a few other aspects. I just could not get into the book and gave up about 200 pages in.

A delightful and fun listen to finish on my first camping trip of the year! I love people who appreciate and take in nature and I thoroughly enjoyed his Covid camper experiences as I look forward, or dream of, joining the RV world in a few years. Also, I enjoy his voice 😂

5feet.of.fury Agree about the narration! He does a great job 5mo
Nute Awesome review! Congrats on being one year closer to joining the RV Camping World. I hope to be a part of that circle one day too!🙂 5mo

A delight, as expected. I‘m not inherently an outdoorsy person (am very much a city mouse) but I can certainly understand the appeal. Offerman‘s narration for the audiobook is entertaining as always.

BookBabe Sounds interesting! I moved from NYC to a mountaintop forest about 7 years ago and love the fresh air and nature surrounding me 🤍 6mo

#BFC week two was a weird one. The kids finally went back to school and I was slammed at work making up for a week of snow days and getting ready for a trip to visit my in-laws in Florida. Then a day of almost no movement because we were driving. Finally we‘re in Florida and spending as much time as possible outside with huge step totals to prove it.

I‘ve read almost nothing in a week and a half. I‘m hoping my reading brain restores itself 🤞

wanderinglynn Enjoy your trip! ☀️ 8mo

I forget Nick Offerman is this man and not Ron Swanson. I feel badly that I did not enjoy this more, I enjoy Offerman & I agree with his politics & his adventures were neat.

I think that some of the tangents might work better in audio format. Also there was less “walking outside” than anticipated.

He references events(election, COVID, 1/6/21) but the whole point in me reading a book is to escape👏from👏this👏reality👏.Not what I was looking for.

This was a fun listen. I enjoyed hearing someone cover serious issues without taking himself too seriously. There is a bonus at end of the audio version that made my day. I won‘t spoil it! #librofm

Good stuff. Love how he weaves wisecracks into his writing, even when the topic is deep or serious. Bonus that he wrote fondly about two of my former homeplaces: Santa Cruz and Wisconsin (and about a random encounter he had with a guy from my particular home region of WI, a guy that now lives in my current CA city! This basically means that Nick [and Megan🤞] and I are friends now, right?). I‘ve read all of his books and will read all future ones.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ This revolves around trips in, and around, the American outdoors - one, a hiking excursion with George Saunders and Jeff Tweedy (yes, pls), another, Airstreaming with the fabulous Megan Mullally (yes, pls). The intention is to give a shit about others and about nature. I like that line of thinking/living, but this dragged a bit. While I usually find Offerman‘s vocabulary and vernacular endearing, it started to wear on me. Narrowly a pick.

JenReadsAlot Maybe I'll read instead of listen to this one... 11mo

I didn‘t actually anticipate finishing “Unprotected” before it was time to leave, so I didn‘t bring another book to read. Luckily (or unluckily, depending on the state of my Library Pile at any given moment) I have a whole building to choose from. 😂 #wherethedeerandtheantelopeplay #nickofferman
