I listened to this fun #MiddleGrade book straight through today! It‘s a story about friendship and the changes in friendship that often occur in middle school. It‘s also a wonderful story of how Nancy Drew stories have been loved by and inspired many girls while also being honest about their flaws as well.

This one was odd. I really wanted to like it, as I've been on a major true crime kick for quite a while. However, this didn't quite cut it. I think I fell victim to weird marketing. The title makes this seem like this is mostly about a serial killer, with a little bit of Eliot Ness. Turns out this more like a biography of Ness with a dash of true crime. Not bad if you are intrigued by Ness, but it wasn't my cup of tea.

I followed Nick‘s battle with Covid online in real time — I‘m a Broadway junkie, saw him perform many times, met him 10+ years ago — but even though I knew the timeline of his last months, it was still heartbreaking to hear Amanda talk though the experience. Her strength is unfathomable. I don‘t recommend putting this on while driving — it isn‘t safe to sob behind the wheel — but it‘s a worthwhile if painful listen. #teachersoflitsy #librofm

The author‘s main goal is to advocate for later school start times for high school students. She starts out by clearly stating this. She goes on to provide a lot of research and great factual information about teenagers‘ sleep. Then she discusses strategies that might be helpful. This is again a lot about school start times. I appreciated the research but the main emphasis on school start times was just too repetitive for me.

LitStephanie I was an extremely sleep deprived teen, and it had nothing to do with what time school started. That does sound too simplistic. Sleep trouble is extremely complicated. 6mo
Daisey @LitStephanie It did include a really good section of research about amount of sleep and changes in timing of alertness/tiredness for teens, but I was hoping for much more in the suggestions section. I agree that the issues are much more complex. 6mo
Goleemn I‘m a high school teacher and every single student has said if school started later, they would stay up later. It‘s a balance and far more complicated than just “start later.” We start at 8, and that seems doable for almost all our kids. 6mo
Daisey @Goleemn I teach middle school and hear a lot of the same. Apparently the research shows that there is at least a slight average increase in sleep time if start times are later, but I agree it‘s more complicated. 6mo

I love this series! Charlie Thorne is so smart, the other characters are great, and each books contains a fantastic combination of history and action. In this 3rd book Charlie is searching for a secret treasure hidden by Cleopatra, and the story emphasizes Cleopatra‘s leadership and intelligence. #MiddleGrade

The Glass Castle: A Memoir | Jeannette Walls

I listened to this because it‘s an alternate summer selection for my AP Lang students. Walls‘ life story is compelling, but I didn‘t find much literary merit in the book itself. Each track being an hour+ didn‘t help. I was most interested to learn how she transitioned to her independent, adult life in NYC, but that part felt fast forwarded: “For a few years… after 4 years… 5 years had passed…” Huge time jumps at the end! #teachersoflitsy #librofm

Grateful for access to the audio of this, because I‘m among the legions who love a good Julia Whelan narration. There were a few things I was a little unsure about re: how some characters were represented, but it was an overall very enjoyable read with fun characters and dialogue, some LOL moments, and ample audiobook-nerd-pleasing references. (Thanks to #LibroFM for the #ALC !)

I loved this book SO MUCH. From familiar topics to ones I‘d never heard of before, every chapter was completely engrossing and entertaining. What a wonderful gift to come out of the pandemic. The audio was perfectly paced for my road trip, but now I need to get my hands on a physical copy because I have so many lesson plan ideas rolling around in my head! I give The Anthropocene Reviewed audiobook 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #teachersoflitsy #librofm

marleed Haha. I listened on audio and had to purchase the hardback for my 5* collection! 6mo

I‘ve had this on my Libro.fm shelf since last year & finally listened to it. Most of it wasn‘t new information after my own 2020-2022 teaching experiences, but I did note several new to me resources & ideas. The author fully acknowledges that it is based on her own experiences & privilege in the school in which she teaches. I found it worthwhile but in no way groundbreaking. I‘ll add a link to her website in the comments. ⬇️

BookBosomed1 I hadn‘t heard of this book. Thanks for the info. I study (and teach) pedagogy + distance education. Part of that work led to a research center dedicated to distance education. I share all of this with you in case you are looking for more resources. Our website may have some resources that are of interest. Everything is free to the public: https://detaresearch.org/. 6mo

This was a fascinating listen. Lucy Cooke travels the world and describes various example of animal relationships that emphasize the power and flexibility of female animals. For so long, science has focused on male animals and disregarded examples of female dominance and choice. This book aims to show a different side of the amazing diversity in the animal kingdom than what has been widely acknowledged.
