What a surprise - not 😁 How often did I mention this book during the last month? 🤭

The second novel is just as great as the first one. Pentecost & Parker are such an awesome pairing - they can't miss! Spotswood gives us readers a good insight into the US just after WWII. He talks about gender, racism, oppression and addiction. Without it being too much or too overwhelming. That might also be thank to Will telling us about her adventures. She's a strong, but lovable woman, and I just can't wait for the next book.

Bookish Song Nr 49: High Hopes

This song reminded me so much of Will. Where she came from, where she wants to go. Who she is and who she's going to be.

“Had to have high, high hopes for a living
Shooting for the stars when I couldn't make a killing
Didn't have a dime but I always had a vision
Always had high, high hopes“

A murder at the circus Parker used to travel with brings Parker and Pentecost to rural Virginia. Will meets old friends and finds out more about the victim's past, as well as her own.

I fear the billboard sized hint at the beginning of the investigation spoiled part of the outcome of the mystery for me.

Low pick. Will probably tackle book 3 soon.

julesG @Andrew65 I bet most casual readers won't pick up on it. But it was obvious to me. 14mo

AlaMich I just started the first book in print and audio and am enjoying both very much. I probably wouldn‘t pick up on the spoiler…I‘m usually pretty oblivious to things like that. 14mo
julesG @AlaMich Wish I could not see the signs. I pick up on anything and everything. My brain is wired like Sherlock's, I fear. 14mo

??? Book 200‼️

Loving the snappy dialogue of this Series!
"I recognized Sister Pamphlet as a certain breed of Bible- pounder I knew from my childhood. The kind that liked their women like they liked their cocktails: weak, if not entirely virginal." ??‍♀️

Willowjean Parker spent some of her early years with the Hart & Halloway Travelling Circus, and they literally saved her life. Now, someone has murdered Will‘s friend: Ruby Donner, the Amazing Tattooed Woman. Parker, and her boss Lillian Pentecost are on the case. Set in 1946, with great characters, and lots of action, we‘re plunged into circus (and small town) life. Another rip-roaring, wonderful read. Keep ‘em coming Mr. Spotswood!

This was a great follow up to the first book. Definitely read these in order as there's lots of call backs to the first book and it explains the characters more. I do hope there's a third in this series though! I love Lillian and Willowjean

The second book in this series and I am still impressed. These are two kick ass females, ready to take on any man who dares think less of them. I am also continually pleased that they talk about MS, but don‘t make everything only about that. The mysteries were engaging and unfolded in a way that kept me captivated. Some red herrings, a little love, and a satisfying conclusion. And it was great to catch up with the case from book 1!
