A Guardian Book of the Year and Chapters/Indigo Best Book A bestseller in Scandinavia -- Doppler is the enchanting, subversive, and very unusual story about one man and his moose. This beguiling modern fable tells the story of a man who, after the death of his father, abandons his home, his family, his career, and the trappings of civilization for a makeshift tent in the woods where he adopts a moose-calf named Bongo. Or is it Bongo who adopts him? Together they devote themselves, with some surprising results, to the art of carefree living. Hilarious, touching, and poignant in equal measure -- you will read it with tear-stained cheeks and sore sides -- Doppler is also a deeply subversive novel and a strong criticism of modern consumer culture.

Very good. Although it might seem like a man vs. nature book, the more you get into it, you realize it's more of a man vs. man or man vs. self book. All about conformity and how we must break away. Very interesting view on people and how we've progressed.

This year I decided for Christmas I am doing one book for each of my family members.
I got this one for my younger sister as she recently got married to a Norwegian man and loves the folklore tales over there.
Can‘t wait to give everybody theirs. 🎄🎁

StayCurious this could be for the #festivephotochallenge Red & White for more points 2y

I chose Doppler as my #FoodAndLit read for #Norway

It was a quick read and I enjoyed it. I liked the Elk, but I didn‘t find the MC very likeable, and everyone else was a little too accepting of his choice to disappear from his family and live in the forest... but at the same time it was fun to read and I would definitely pick up the sequel if it is translated!

#freakyfriday book 13 from @zeljka , #readathon book 1
Had some help reading this one #catsoflitsy #bookandcat

This Norwegian book is a fable about a man who goes and lives in the woods. Sarcastic and cutting about "civilized" lifestyle, though after the man flees civilization to live in the wilderness, the wilderness becomes more and more gentrified. Short book and grateful to have discovered this author - thanks @zeljka !

zezeki So glad you enjoyed this one! 😀😀 6y

Mehso-so

This book is getting a so-so because there's a moose on the cover, otherwise it would be a pan. I hoped for an endearing story about this guy and his moose but no. Yep there's a moose, orphaned on page 1 by the totally unlikeable narrator. It's a rambling tale about a self absorbed dude living in the woods, avoiding life & exploiting all people/situations. Was hoping it would continue till the moose hit puberty and stomped him. ...lol #ilovemoose

Bookish.SAM Oh no! I come across this book everywhere and wonder if I should pick it up (also probably because of the moose on the cover)... maybe not (edited) 6y
TheCanuckReader I even saved it to read for a couple of years because I was afraid it was gonna be sad. It was just. ...bleh 6y
Tamra Oh too bad, it seemed like it might be good from the blurb. Thanks for saving me the time & $! 6y

One problem with people is that as soon as they fill a space it's them you see and not the space. Large, desolate landscapes stop being large, desolate landscapes once they have people in them. They define what the eye sees. And the human eye is almost always directed at other humans. In this way an illusion is created that humans are more important than those things on earth which are not human. It's a sick illusion.
