Confessions of a Curious Bookseller
Confessions of a Curious Bookseller | Elizabeth Green
17 posts | 12 read | 17 to read
A heartening and uproariously funny novel of high hopes, bad choices, book love, and one woman's best--and worst--intentions.Without question, Fawn Birchill knows that her used bookstore is the heart of West Philadelphia, a cornerstone of culture for a community that, for the past twenty years, has found the quirkiness absolutely charming. When an amicable young indie bookseller invades her block, Fawn is convinced that his cushy couches, impressive selection, coffee bar, and knowledgeable staff are a neighborhood blight. Misguided yet blindly resilient, Fawn readies for battle. But as she wages her war, Fawn is forced to reflect on a few unavoidable truths: the tribulations of online dating, a strained relationship with her family, and a devoted if not always law-abiding intern--not to mention what to do about a pen pal with whom she hasn't been entirely honest and the litany of repairs her aging store requires.Through emails, journal entries, combative online reviews, texts, and tweets, Fawn plans her next move. Now it's time for her to dig deep and use every trick at her disposal if she's to reclaim her beloved business--and her life.

I was really excited for this one because I love books written in letters, emails, texts, etc. However I had to add this one to my DNF list. Unfortunately the main character is so unlikeable that it's unbearable.

It's a nice breezy day today so I decided to take my reading outside. Just starting Confessions of a Curious Bookseller by Elizabeth Green. As you can see my spoiled gal is already making her sad puppy dog face to say please pick me up now. Fancy is the definition of a lap dog. 🤣

I originally picked this book up because I enjoy books written in this style- diary entries, letters, etc. Yes, the MC is annoying and a liar, but there is something about this book that made me laugh out loud numerous times. If you‘re just looking for something light and funny, this is a quick read that fits the bill.

When there‘s a shortage of driving instructors due to the pandemic and you have to go half an hour away to get one, yes I can spend 2 hours over 4 days sitting in the car reading while I wait.

This book is LOL funny. The MC is a pathological liar!

Leftcoastzen Good for you getting out there. 3y

Ah, the ongoing debate ebook vs print. I‘ve been doing ebooks for over a year and I am enjoying having this paper book in hand. (Not to mention, it smells great!)

rubyslippersreads I ❤️ both. 😊 3y
megnews @rubyslippersreads I do too. I‘m awful at returning books on time so end up with fines. Not possible with library ebooks so that was my biggest reason for the switch to mostly ebooks. Also very convenient when out somewhere or going on vacation 3y
JaclynW I do both. I love them both! Depends on the situation. :) 3y

I already don‘t qualify for this job. I couldn‘t even pretend to. (Sorry to all the Litsy cat lovers!)

The premise of this book seems like it would be perfect for me: a woman and her cat running a used bookstore. But the main character was super unlikeable and since it was written all through journal entries and correspondence from her perspective, I could not stand it after a while. Decided to instead move on to a more enjoyable read.

This book was long winded and could not keep my attention at all. I finally had to get the audiobook also just to finish it. I do not like to bail so I painfully sat through all 473 pages. I wouldn‘t recommend it at all.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Thanks to #netgalley and #lakeunionpublishing for the ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review. A heartwarming, funny and very entertaining read. This book gave me Eleanor Oliphant vibes in all the very best ways. I loved the writing style of this book, it's written in a mix of emails and diary entries. I found this style to be very engaging and easy to read. It gave a delightful look into Fawn"s life as a second hand bookstore owner

What an amazing #BookCupidSwap package, @Lovesbooks87 ! These are all my favorite chocolates (ok, yes, I may have a teeny sweet tooth) and the socks were an unexpected bonus. Looking forward to starting this book soon too! Thank you so much for the thoughtful gifts.

Thanks also to @candority for hosting such a fun swap!

I am not a fan of this style of writing...just snippets of emails, letters, diary entries...and no actual chapters. I made it 10% and that‘s it. The main character is quite passive aggressive, narcissistic, with martyr tendencies and just so self-centered as more important than everyone else...and a liar to boot. I just don‘t see the plot & the format is driving me nuts. I had such high hopes for this too - generally love bookseller stories.

Didn‘t hate it, but couldn‘t find much to like either. Usually enjoy the epistolary format, but not this time.

I am giving up at 40%. Main character is just so unlikeable. Maybe it‘s me and I just don‘t “get” it, but I suspect I have better books to see in the new year with.
