Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain | Oliver Sacks
What goes on in human beings when they make or listen to music? What is it about music, what gives it such peculiar power over us, power delectable and beneficent for the most part, but also capable of uncontrollable and sometimes destructive force? Music has no concepts, it lacks images; it has no power of representation, it has no relation to the world. And yet it is evident in all of uswe tap our feet, we keep time, hum, sing, conduct music, mirror the melodic contours and feelings of what we hear in our movements and expressions. In this book, Oliver Sacks explores the power music wields over usa power that sometimes we control and at other times dont. He explores, in his inimitable fashion, how it can provide access to otherwise unreachable emotional states, how it can revivify neurological avenues that have been frozen, evoke memories of earlier, lost events or states or bring those with neurological disorders back to a time when the world was much richer. This is a book that explores, like no other, the myriad dimensions of our experience of and with music. From the Hardcover edition.

For #tuesdaytunes, I‘m sharing this playlist I found on Spotify one day when I was at the dog park with my dog. When I go to the dog park in my neighborhood, I let my dog off the leash and let her run around in there. Then, I put my earbuds in and start walking the path while listening to music and she walks with me. I‘ve been listening to this playlist when I‘m at the dog park with my dog. I like a lot of the songs so far.

TieDyeDude Fun! Thanks for the recommendation 1mo

As I have a busy day tomorrow, I am creating my #tuesdaytunes post now. A lot of cover love right now, with Cash's version of The Beatles “In My Life“ being a perennial favorite. This is on American IV, the same album as the iconic version as “Hurt“ & I think it deserves as much attention; it is more understated but the emotions are there nonetheless & it is a fantastic cover. Secondly, is Meg Myers' cover “Running Up That Hill.“ (CONT)

vivastory Yes, really. I love the Kate Bush song, but my intro to the tune was not through Stranger Things & not through Bush's version but through Myers' cover when it was played on my local radio in 2020. For a non-cover song that I am loving at the moment: Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan's collaborations, esp. their album Hawk.

One of my fave albums that I have discovered in the past few months is Stevens' “Illinoise“ & one of the tracks that jumped out even during the initial listen was “John Wayne Gacy Jr“ This popped up on a spotify play list earlier today. Other favorites: “We Gathered In Spring“ (Midlake) “Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye“ (Betty Swann) “The Dark End Of The Street“ (James Carr)
Link to “John Wayne Gacy Jr“:

I usually always play at least a couple wistful, melancholy folk music albums on Sunday nights. The sort of music that would make a perfect soundtrack to the stories of Alice Munro or the poetry of Emily Dickinson. After just playing a favorite (Vashti Bunyan's Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind) I decided to go off on a different tangent & turn it up to 11 with a favorite: the most recent Low album. RIP Mimi Parker.

Bookwomble Vashti Bunyan! 💖🎶 1y

As someone who loves music, this is an interesting question. My top 5 most listened to albums, in no particular order:
💿 Nirvana: Unplugged
💿 Beastie Boys: Hello Nasty
💿Sharon Van Etten: Are We There
💿João Gilberto: Getz/Gilberto
💿The Cure: Galore
What are your 5 most listened to albums?

TrishB My head started spinning at the thought of 5…..here goes: Telekon - Gary Numan The Pleasure Principle - Numan (my 2 comfort albums) Ocean Rain - Echo and The Bunneymen, Systems of Romance - Ultravox! Songs of Faith and Devotion- Depeche Mode. 2y
Graywacke 1. Wish you were here - Pink Floyd 2. Automatic for the People - REM … then not sure: Maybe 3. A Farewell to Kings? Rush 4. Boston - Boston 5. Scarred but Smarter by Drivin‘ ‘n Cryin‘ 2y
batsy Oooh, off the top off my head: 1) Little Earthquakes, Tori Amos 2) When the Pawn..., Fiona Apple 3) Ten, Pearl Jam 4) Disintegration, The Cure 5) Songs of Faith and Devotion, Depeche Mode 2y
See All 41 Comments
merelybookish That is a great question! Joni Mitchell's Blue; Nanci Griffith's Other Voices, Other Rooms; Indigo Girls's Rites of Passage, Natalie Merchant's Tigerlily; Ingrid Michaelson's Maybe. (Can you tell I came of age around the time of Lilith Fair?! 😂) 2y
vivastory @TrishB I have listened to very little Numan. I really need to rectify this! I love, love Echo & the Bunnymen! I'm adding Ocean Rain to my Spotify library 2y
vivastory @Graywacke I was just listening to Wish You Were Here (the song) a couple of nights ago! Great choices. I meant to tell you that I checked out a few of the selections on the Rolling Stone 500 greatest albums that we were talking about & I have discovered a few gems. Notably Laura Nyro's “Eli & the 13th Confession,“ Alice Coltrane's phenomenal “Journey in Satchidanada“ & GZA's “Liquid Swords“ 2y
vivastory @batsy 👏 Ten was the first CD I ever owned. Tori Amos '97 remains one of my favorite concerts of all-time. LOVE Fiona Apple. My favorite Fiona album seems to always change. Great choices! 2y
vivastory @merelybookish I 💙 Blue (Although I was all about Lollapalooza, I vividly remember Lilith Fair) 2y
Graywacke @merelybookish you‘re so young. 🙂 2y
Graywacke @vivastory that‘s awesome about the RS 500. It got me to finally listen to Harry Styles closer. I like him. And it made me embarrassed to only just learn Iggy Pop was pretty awesome with The Stooges. I hadn‘t heard of them. (edited) 2y
Graywacke @vivastory FYi - in high school i was all classic rock and it had me into Pink Floyd, Rush and Boston (and Kansas). Such a long time ago. I‘ve come back around to Pink Floyd. Got my daughter into them briefly. 2y
DLQBOOKNERD I listened to Slippery When Wet so much on cassette, I had to buy new ones 3 times. 2y
merelybookish @Graywacke Not OLD exactly but definitely not young either. 🙃 2y
Branwen Ooooh that's a really interesting question! I think at least a few of mine would be Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Loreena Mckennit, and Dave Matthews Band! 2y
vivastory @Branwen Is there a particular Pink Floyd album you like? 2y
Twainy Apple Music tells me nothing LOL

AC/DC
Rammstein
Electric Callboy
Metallica
Five Finger Death Punch
2y
TrishB I think looking at your other faves go for Splinter or Intruder by Numan. 2y
TrishB @batsy we had to have one the same 😉 2y
batsy @vivastory Yes, I had a hard time picking a Fiona one since I listened to them all obsessively and they're also all my faves 😅 2y
batsy @merelybookish Love these selections and especially seeing Natalie Merchant come up; Ophelia was the album I had on all the time. 2y
batsy @Branwen Loreena McKennit's Book of Secrets and DMB's Under the Table and Dreaming were huge faves 🙌🏾 2y
batsy @TrishB Yes, and what a classic 😊 2y
Bookwomble According to mp3 player: Bowie Top 5: 1) Young Americans; 2) Hunky Dory; 3) Aladdin Sane; 4) Station to Station; 5) Low. Go back to pre-digital & Ziggy & The Man Who Sold the World would be in there. Non-DB Top 5: 1) Transformer, Lou Reed; 2) Hard Nose the Highway, Van Morrison; 3) The Kick Inside, Kate Bush; 4) Blood on the Tracks, Bob Dylan; 5) Lust for Life, Iggy Pop. I think this is both representative and unrepresentative of my tastes! 😁 2y
Bookwomble @TrishB Love your first three picks, though only know the singles for Ultravox (Ooooh, Vienna!!) and Depeche Mode. My sister loved Depeche Mode as much as I love Bowie and you love Numan, so I guess I should try to listen to more by them. 2y
Bookwomble @Graywacke Wish You Were Here is a good chillout album for me. RUSH! I was crazy for them when I was at high school, and they were the first band I saw in concert. I find them difficult to listen to now, though - taste's changed, I guess 🙂 2y
TrishB @Bookwomble - I love pre-Midge Ultravox! which people don‘t even realise existed. It‘s a cross between early Bowie/Roxy Music- def not the electronic band they then became! I urge a listen for you 😁 DM are vastly under rated in this country I think. And I missed Kate off, I could die happily listening to the ninth wave. 2y
Bookwomble @TrishB I've heard a bit of John Foxx Ultravox and liked it, but never got round to a proper listen. I guess that's what Spotify's for 😊 Pretty much anything by KB is phenomenal, isn't it though? 2y
TrishB @Bookwomble yes any KB is worthy! 2y
Graywacke @Bookwomble I have some Rush on my Apple mix so I can still sneak them in, if no one is around. Nostalgia. 2y
Graywacke So I just discovered Apple Music takes my most played songs for year and puts a list together. 2022 is weird because I spent a lot of time exploring the Rolling Stone 500 list (from 2020). But 2021 is more representative. Here are albums of the 1st 5 songs: Siamese Dream - The Smashing Pumpkins, The Best of REM, Hatful of Hallow - The Smiths, The Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd, Scarred but Smarter - Drivin‘ N‘ Cryin‘ 2y
vivastory @Twainy Do you like Apple Music? I see a lot of people use it 2y
vivastory @Bookwomble When I was a teenager I worked in a music store and I bought a box set (cassettes) of Bowie's 70s albums. It blew my mind. Have you seen the trailer for the upcoming concert film/doc Moonage Daydream? 2y
vivastory @TrishB Thank you for the Numan recs. Adding Intruder to my Spotify library. I'll let you know what I think! 2y
vivastory @Graywacke It's interesting that Apple does that for the current yr. Spotify does it at the end of the yr, but as far as I'm aware they don't as the yr progresses. Siamese Dream is def my fave SP album! I love REM, (esp Monster & New Adventures) 2y
Graywacke @vivastory Along with The Pixies, nothing else does it for me like the loudest Smashing Pumpkins - when I‘m in that mood. 🙂 I‘ve been on a REM revisit kick for several years, the 80‘s and 90‘s stuff, which are really different. (My favorite song is Bad Day, from The Best of - it‘s a 1990‘s reproduction of a 1980‘s song. The perfect mix!) 2y
Twainy I do like it. I‘ve become lazy with my music. I rarely listen to an entire album after it‘s released. I‘ll cull those new albums for the best songs & dump them into my …. Covid-19 … playlist. Yes it‘s that old 😆 it has 422 songs. My Apple Replay shows I‘ve listened to 542 different artists in 2022 & those 5 that I listed were the ones I listen to most. I can support that … 💯 2y
SconsinBookyBadger Go to comfort music: Tori Amos, Faith and the Muse, Garbage, Pink Floyd, and Tom Petty. 🎶🎧🎶 2y
Branwen @vivastory I really like Dark Side of the Moon, but my absolute favorite is Wish You We're Here since my favorite Pink Floyd song is on that album - Shine On You Crazy Diamond! 2y
Branwen @batsy YES! I love Book of Secrets! 💕 2y
vivastory @AnansiGirl Tori Amos is definitely comfort music. Little Earthquakes was literally the second album I saved to my library when I started my Spotify account 2y
vivastory @Branwen Both are great! 2y

Just looked at my Spotify wrapup. I'm always a bit surprised by my most listened to artist. Lana Del Rey's Chemtrails Over the Country Club was one of my first favorite albums of the year, but I figured I have listened to others more often. Not surprised that WSIRN is my most listened to podcast. Backlisted was # 2. Also, if I ever write an autobiography I have found my title "Yearning & Wistful." Sounds like a Belle and Sebastian album.

It‘s easy to become eagerly engaged in the mysteries and discoveries that the brain holds, especially with Sacks‘ descriptive style.

John Lee narrates the audio book with a soothing cadence, bringing a melodic rhythm to Sacks‘ words.

Outdated phrasing is sort of expected with older works and this book has terms we would no longer use. Besides that it‘s a very accessible book and highly recommended.

#Movember - Music: I like when there is a prompt about music in the photo challenges because listening to music is equally as important to me as reading books. I usually do the two together. I have a playlist on my iPod titled ‘Music for Reading.‘🎶 Reading penetrates to some deeper part of my brain when I‘m listening to music simultaneously. Oliver Sacks understood - music wields a power over the brain. I say music communicates with the soul.🎵

Cinfhen That‘s so interesting/ when I read I can‘t have background music....I find my concentration is broken 🤷🏼‍♀️ 4y
Nute @Cinfhen I get that! It‘s the same for why I can‘t read and have a television on in the background. And I can‘t read in places where there are conversations like waiting rooms or on public transportation. Here‘s the deal with the music thing - it must be at low volume and only a particular type of music like classical or new age or smooth jazz...no vocals...no upbeat tempo. I really like haunting cello music while I read. Oooh...just lovely!☺️ 4y
Cinfhen Yes !!!!! to the public reading spaces and TV background/ so distracting!!! I‘ll try smooth jazz or new age. I find music is so soothing on any other circumstance 4y

The 90s were all about music for me. I lived in some headphone bubble with the songs that helped get me through life. I tried to make this playlist as exhaustive as possible but I've already left out a few ... like Bobby Brown 😂 I was so into alternative music & female singers & dreaming about attending Lilith Fair 😍 But not forgetting hip-hop & RnB. Had to make a playlist 🤓 https://spoti.fi/2Yzi1IS #90sSpringFling @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB

Susannah I went to Lilith Fair in 1998! Sarah McLachlan sounded better live than on her albums. 🥰 I love your playlist, though I liked “Creep” by Radiohead better than TLC‘s song of the same name. 😉 So many memories in these songs. (edited) 5y

I am going to be the singer in a newly formed band, so I‘m coming up with a list of songs to suggest at our meeting tomorrow. Can‘t wait! Any suggestions?

CaitZ I'm a country music fan so I don't have any suggestions, but I wanted to wish you good luck. It sounds like a fun adventure 5y
kgriffith Never There by Cake? Mother Mother by Tracy Bonham? These are great! 5y

So, we have new neighbours (and they have a baby due in 3 weeks!), and we share a dividing wall...they‘re not noisy, but they‘re ‘present‘. I‘m super sensitive to noise and our schedules are overlapping. I usually read with silence in the house. Any tips of some background music I can download from Apple Music to set a good reading environment if I can‘t have silence!

MatchlessMarie I love Vitamin String Quartet as background music. 5y
Traci1 I don't listen to music, but I have an app called ambio that has a bunch of different sound files you can mix and match to set a mood. They have one that is train sounds, and I play that when I'm reading and it makes me feel like I'm reading while on a journey. It's soothing and doesn't distract from my book. 5y
Tamra Bill Evans - jazz piano, really relaxing 5y

Mitch @MatchlessMarie Thank you - trying them out now x 5y
Mitch @Tamra listening now.... x 5y
OrangeMooseReads You might check out Spotify or Pandora for “study music” stations those tend to have classical and the like. Or even a “white noise” station. 5y
Mitch @Traci1 just looking on the Appstore now - didn‘t think about ambient sounds...good call, thank you ❤️ 5y
Mitch @OrangeMooseReads just found a study music playlist...👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 5y
Booksnchill I do “ambient sounds” of nature, streams, current favorite is fireplace 5y
OrangeMooseReads @Mitch 👍🏼 hope it helps 5y
CrowCAH Classical or movie scores are nice, not too distracting. 5y
Mitch @Sarah83 thank you xxx (edited) 5y
Mitch @CrowCAH yeah, I want it to be invisible really and just stop me tuning in to other noises 5y
Kappadeemom I listen to Yacht Rock on Spotify 😂😂 5y
Kappadeemom Actually, sometimes I listen to Rain or Beach on Spotify. I use it sometimes when I am in hotels (which is weekly) 5y
Mitch @Kappadeemom I‘m learning a lot today! 🤣 5y
Kappadeemom Spotify has a lot of playlists - just search by Mood or Chill and there are a lot of options 5y
CouronneDhiver We have neighbours with a shared wall too... they were very unkind to one another this week and I heard every word. 😬 5y
Mitch @CouronneDhiver we‘ve always been super lucky, our neighbours know how sound travels and they‘ve been super hush. They‘ve rented the house out whilst their jobs have taken them to San Francisco for two years.... we need to drop hints with the new guys how much the sound travels, I think because we‘re so quiet they must think sound doesn‘t travel! She‘s a yoga teacher, so hoping for some zen vibes! However, she‘s also 8 months pregnant! 5y
BooksAtNight If YouTube is an option, they also often have lots of hour long instrumental videos and playlists. I usually go for anything with the keywords “study” or “relaxing”. I also really enjoy video game sound tracks, especially if I‘m reading something action-packed. 5y
Marilyncjackson I put on massage music. It‘s usually instrumental with nature sounds mixed in so I find it to be good background music. 5y
Itchyfeetreader I was going to suggest a white noise app 5y
Mitch @Itchyfeetreader @Marilyncjackson @BooksAtNight Thanks Guys, so many new things to try, much appreciated 🙏 5y
iread2much The pride and prejudice soundtracks. They are relaxing and uplifting 5y

Heard this song on the radio & thought I‘d share the #highlyrelatablecontent.

Other, lyrical gems:

“I'm working backwards, forwards
And left to right
And I'm pretty darn hard headed
But I can't make up my mind.”

“I like to figure things out and make everything right
But I'm secretly thrilled when everything's changing.”

Listen for yourself!:

Pickpick

Why is music so powerful and why does it have such a hold over the human race? Oliver Sachs tries to answer from his neurological practice. More questions than answers, and despite Sachs's obvious compassion it does read a bit like a freak show at times

Oliver Sacks has an incredible legacy, including this book.
I have learned so much from reading his works.

JackOBotts What was your first Oliver Sacks read? He was always fascinating to listen to on RadioLab, but I‘ve yet to dig into his books. Any recommendation for a starter? 5y
kspenmoll @JackOBotts The Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat was my first read. He has written so much! 5y

1. I'm not sure I have a favorite but in 1988/89 these guys were my jam. #NKOTB4ever
2. I am doing a couple of challenges and I set a good reads goal that seemed insane but is almost completed
3. A half hour at lunch and a half hour with my morning coffee.
4. One burglary about 5 years ago
5. I was both a Guinness world record holder and in sports illustrated during the same year.
@MinDea #humpdaypost

wanderinglynn NKOTB 4 ever! Man, I loved them back in the day. And that‘s so cool you were a record holder! 🙌🏻 6y
TheKidUpstairs I have seen NKOTB in concert 4 times. 3 of those were as a grown woman. 💖💖💖 6y
amb @TheKidUpstairs I've seen them three once as an adult and once I went to a bar where Jordan Knight was performing in support of his solo album. That wasn't as good 😐 6y

MinDea What?!? What are you the Guinness world record holder of?!? 6y
MinDea Also, NKOTB was my first concert ever! 💙💙🙌 @TheKidUpstairs 6y

1- this was hard cause I love so many and it depends on my mood but right now I am listening to a lot of Dallas Green (City & Colour and Alexisonfire) and Alkaline Trio.
2- just my goodreads one which is 300.
3- probably about 3 hours
4- not a lot but I assume the general amount for suburb 10 miles outside of Portland.
5- uh I‘ve never broken a bone and I have never had braces but have really straight teeth.

a day late, but why not!

• currently listening to Kacey Musgraves‘ album Pageant Material and Shawn Mendes‘ album Shawn Mendes

• I don‘t have just one, but some longtime faves are Pink, Kate Voegele, Marianas Trench, and Stone Sour

• I don‘t subscribe to any, but I‘m thinking about trying Apple Music! Thoughts?

2. My Morning Jacket, the Hip, Rolling Stones, Sam Cooke, Jenny Lewis.

3. Just about everything, depending on my mood!

4. Nope. I use Google Play Music a lot, but don't subscribe.

vkois88 ♫♫ We're going on a trip in our favorite rocketship, zooming through the sky ♫♫ 😂 best part of the show! My daughter enjoyed watching it a few times, then was over it lol 6y
SleepyDragon My oldest hated Little Einsteins, back when it was on all the time. Now that they only air it in the middle of the night, my two youngest can't get enough of it. Also, we have a book that plays the PJ masks song, which I foolishly bought them at Costco. They don't even read it. They just push the one button over and over and have a dance party. Yay. Sometimes they switch it up with a Beat Bugs book that also plays music. 6y

I‘ve had the tagged book on my TBR for years! Love music! https://www.last.fm/user/iceboxwoman/

🎵This morning was the new NIN, followed by my Discover Weekly playlist on Spotify
🎶The Beatles, Pearl Jam, Tori Amos, Alanis Morissette, Nine Inch Nails
🎵Rock
🎶I subscribed to Spotify Premium for the next 3 months. I probably won‘t keep it. I have a huge iTunes library.
🎵If you read this, tag, you‘re it! I love this topic!

wanderinglynn Thanks for playing! 😀 I love the discover weekly & daily mix playlists on Spotify. 👍🏻 6y
AmyG How is the new NIN? I love the Browse- What‘s new for me. 6y
dariazeoli @AmyG I have to give it multiple listens. It was 6:30 in the morning and too low volume fo a good critique 😉 6y
