A Spell for Trouble
A Spell for Trouble: An Enchanted Bay Mystery | Esme Addison
10 posts | 9 read | 15 to read
Fans of Ellery Adams and Heather Blake will be charmed by Esme Addison's new Enchanted Bay mystery series. Aleksandra Daniels hasn't set foot in the quiet seaside town of Bellamy Bay, North Carolina in over twenty years. Ever since her mother's tragic death, her father has mysteriously forbidden her from visiting her aunt and cousins. But on a whim, Alex accepts an invitation to visit her estranged relatives and to help them in their family business: an herbal apothecary known for its remarkably potent teas, salves, and folk remedies. Bellamy Bay doesn't look like trouble, but this is a town that harbors dark secrets. Alex discovers that her own family is at the center of salacious town gossip, and that they are rumored to be magical healers descended from mermaids. She brushes this off as nonsense until a local is poisoned and her aunt Lidia is arrested for the crime. Alex is certain Lidia is being framed, and she resolves to find out why. Alex's investigation unearths stories that some have gone to desperate lengths to conceal: forbidden affairs, family rivalries, and the truth about Alex's own ancestry. And when the case turns deadly, Alex learns that not only are these secrets worth hiding, but they may even be worth killing for.

I finished this one early last week. It was recommended to me by #getTBR (which I‘ve since put on hold).

It‘s a cozy, witchy mystery. It‘s been a while since I‘ve read a cozy so that probably effects my rating. This one was okay, but I probably won‘t continue with any more of the series.

I‘ve had this in my TBR forever, and October seemed like the right time to read a supernatural cozy mystery. I like that it is set in my home state, even though it‘s not a real place. The villain (or how they did it) was a surprise. It felt a little long at times but was overall fun. I will read the second one at some point. This is my #BookSpin for October

First book of 2022 done! And that‘s the only thing worth remembering of this one.
I found it very sloppy, the characters were obnoxious, barely any development there. Cozy mysteries are a pretty new genre to me but this one was just way below expectations. The premise of the series could be good. I‘d look at the next in the series to see if the author was able to polish up her storytelling at all.

There were portions I really liked, but Alex jumping to conclusions really finished my enjoyment.

Library haul! I went a few days earlier than I intended to because I wanted a destination for my walk, and because another TV season‘s in transit for me and I didn‘t want to have two out at the same time.

Alex heads to Bellamy Bay to help with the family business and arrives just in time for her aunt to be suspected of murder. Of course, Alex is sure that accusation is false, so she decides to uncover the true murderer—and in the process, learn a little about her family history. #scarathlon #teamslaughter #screamathon #sbooktober

"I Found This Great Book" podcast led me to this debut cozy mystery. Alex takes on the role of the bothersome amateur sleuth trying to prove her aunt can't be guilty of murder. We follow along as Alex gets herself caught up in deadly situations as she uncovers the truth about the murder and her mythical family. About 99% of the characters are white so if you want diversity, you're not going to find it here. This is a pleasant read. #cozymystery
