A spellbinding, propulsive new novel from the bestselling mystery writer who "is in a class by herself." (The New York Times) Cal Hooper thought a fixer-upper in a bucolic Irish village would be the perfect escape. After twenty-five years in the Chicago police force and a bruising divorce, he just wants to build a new life in a pretty spot with a good pub where nothing much happens. But when a local kid whose brother has gone missing arm-twists him into investigating, Cal uncovers layers of darkness beneath his picturesque retreat, and starts to realize that even small towns shelter dangerous secrets. "One of the greatest crime novelists writing today" (Vox) weaves a masterful, atmospheric tale of suspense, asking what we sacrifice in our search for truth and justice, and what we risk if we don't.

Mehso-so

This book took forever to get to the point. Once it did, it was good. The narrator for the audiobook did a great job I always find that Tana French‘s books are so slow to start.

Cal Hooper moves from Chicago to a tiny hamlet in Ireland to lead his post retirement life in peace and solitude. Then a local kid comes to him with a request - find a missing relative. Unwillingly, Cal tries to help the kid. But what he finds is much bigger and sinister than he expected!

Thanks for the tag @TheSpineView !!
1) I wanted to get the tagged from the library and waited... and waited... hopefully a hold that comes in for January...
2) I just feel like it was a weird reading year. Inconsistent. I got distracted constantly and put down a LOT of books and read super slow. So I guess I regret not having more focus and a better handle in my TBR. I am a mood reader and 2020 was a MOOD 🤣🤣

I‘ve got four other books to finish, but tonight I had to make a trip to western Ireland with Tana French. 💚 No regrets

REPollock I‘m looking forward to this one! 2y
Grrlbrarian Finished it today. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me, and as close to a trip to Ireland as I‘m likely to get for a while. Hope you like it too, @REPollock 2y

Another hit by Tana French. Another standalone as well, this one involves an ex-Chicago cop in the Irish countryside and a missing boy. The resolution has a special place in my heart for reasons. I can't say why--I'm not spoiling it!

MyNamesParadise @Hazel2019 Out of the first four Dublin Murder Squad books that I‘ve read, Faithful Place is my favorite! I started reading The Secret Place at one point years ago but then never finished it, so I‘ll have to start from the beginning now. Glad that you liked The Witch Elm! It makes me even more annoyed that I can‘t find my copy! I know I have it because I opened the amazon package it came in not too long ago! Sigh. Gotta keep looking! 2y
Hazel2019 @MyNamesParadise @Bielzebubby @eggs Have you seen the TV series that‘s based on Tana French‘s books? I haven‘t ...wondering if it‘s worth watching 2y
Bielzebubby @Hazel2019 I watched it and enjoyed it but at times they blended books and it got really confusing for me. However, they did such a great job with casting that I totally bought into it 2y
MyNamesParadise @Hazel2019 I saw part of one episode and I couldn‘t really get into it. I couldn‘t always understand what they were saying. I usually use subtitles for British/Irish shows. 🙈 I‘d give it another try if I could use subtitles. It‘s been a while since I read In the Woods and The Likeness, which is what the first season is based on. I‘d want a re-read before watching, but I lent both of them to my sister and she‘s reading them now. 2y
