Toast
Toast: Homage to a Superfood | Nick Parker
2 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
More toast is eaten in this country than any other food, yet it has been shunned by recipe books and ignored by history. Toast is here to set the record straight and to sing the praises of this much undervalued staple of our diets.

This is what I call a toaster. Does both sides at once and the toast pops up when it‘s done. This one does 4 slices. You can get smaller ones that do 2 and bigger ones that do six. There was a bit of a fad for toaster ovens here back in the 80‘s, but they‘re not common now.

Isn‘t it wonderful where books can take you?🤣

rubyslippersreads I still have the toaster oven my dad bought 25 years ago, although I usually use a pop-up toaster. My brother still has my grandma‘s toaster—the flat kind that sits on a stove burner, and you (very carefully) turn the toast with your fingers. 😄 9mo
IndoorDame @rubyslippersreads oooh, I‘m not sure what the flat kind looks like… is it kind of like a griddle? 9mo
Bookzombie I have this kind of toaster currently. It only does two slices at a time. I was a kid in the 80s so maybe that‘s when we got a toaster oven too. My mom used it for years. 🙂 9mo

Centique Yes! Ive seen a toaster oven overseas but i just thought it was a pie warmer. Never figured out how to make toast in it. 😂 9mo
BarbaraBB Yes! This is what I‘ve got too. Toasts two slices and can be put away when not in use. Thanks Carolyn 😀 9mo
Cinfhen This is what I call a stand up toaster! The other that @Bookzombie shared is a toaster oven @BarbaraBB , which I use…not to be confused with a convection toaster which my mom has in Florida and I can‘t figure out how to use it at all @Centique !!!! I ❤️my toaster oven, #OnceAnEightiesGirlAlwaysAnEightiesGirl 😜 9mo
BarbaraBB A convection toaster @Cinfhen ? Never heard of that one either 😂 but I am glad I now know what the word stand up toaster means! 9mo
Cinfhen So funny where a book review about a thriller has lead to an entire international “education” on toasters @BarbaraBB @TrishB 9mo
TrishB @Cinfhen I feel I am well educated for any future world travels 😁 9mo
TrishB @BarbaraBB putting your toaster away is another source of much discussion too! If you have watched Derrygirls you‘ll know only Protestants put the toaster away😂 9mo
TrishB And now @rubyslippersreads introduces a new toaster! 9mo
batsy Yep, this is what is known as a toaster in these parts, too! 😁 9mo
CarolynM @rubyslippersreads That sounds delightfully old world! My grandparents had the kind with the element in the middle and pull-down sides. You had to be pretty careful turning the toast over in that one too😆 9mo
CarolynM @TrishB I didn‘t realise I had Catholic habits🤣 If I was at home I‘d post a picture of my kettle and toaster in their little permanent bench nook. Explains why my parents always put their toaster away though. 9mo
CarolynM @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB @Centique @batsy We‘ve all been thoroughly educated and can feel much more like women of the world now🤣 @TrishB really started something! 9mo
TrishB I know what to expect anywhere in the world for my tea and toast now 😁 9mo
rubyslippersreads @BarbaraBB Just be sure it‘s completely cool before you put it away. I know of someone who burned down her kitchen by putting a still-hot toaster in a cupboard. 9mo
rubyslippersreads @TrishB Grandma‘s toaster looks somewhat like the flat ones shown at the top of this article: https://improvisedlife.com/2014/02/03/toast-comfort-stove-top-toasters-tattood-f... 9mo
erzascarletbookgasm Mine toasts two slices at once and toast bread is my favourite staple breakfast 👌😊 9mo
BarbaraBB @TrishB Another source of much discussion 😂 I grew up in a Catholic part of Holland, I should have paid attention what they did with their toasters! And you are right @rubyslippersreads it needs to cool first! 9mo
CarolynM @rubyslippersreads 😱😱😱 9mo
CarolynM @erzascarletbookgasm You can‘t beat tea and toast to start the day 😄 9mo

Pickpick

A light humorous book on the subject of toast. From this I learnt that people in the 19th century used to drink "toast water" on the assumption that it had health benefits. ??
Read this as my #doublespin for January's #bookspin.
It is also my #bakedgoodsoncover pick for #booked2021

Moonprismpower Just how does one make this toast water you speak of?? 😂 3y
Smarkies @Moonprismpower it is literally making toast, putting in a bowl / jug, pour boiling water over it, covering it until it was cold. Then straining it. 🤣🤣🤣 3y
Moonprismpower Ew. What a waste of good toast. I will have to toast the toast lost in the Battle of ToastWater with champagne tonight. But for now I will make toast, with butter and enjoy it as it should be, what we like to call the right way 😩😁😂 3y
