We Band of Angels
We Band of Angels: The Untold Story of the American Women Trapped on Bataan | Elizabeth Norman
10 posts | 7 read | 27 to read
In the fall of 1941, the Philippines was a gardenia-scented paradise for the American Army and Navy nurses stationed there. War was a distant rumor, life a routine of easy shifts and dinners under the stars. On December 8 all that changed, as Japanese bombs began raining down on American bases in Luzon, and this paradise became a fiery hell. Caught in the raging battle, the nurses set up field hospitals in the jungles of Bataan and the tunnels of Corregidor, where they tended to the most devastating injuries of war, and suffered the terrors of shells and shrapnel. But the worst was yet to come. After Bataan and Corregidor fell, the nurses were herded into internment camps where they would endure three years of fear, brutality, and starvation. Once liberated, they returned to an America that at first celebrated them, but later refused to honor their leaders with the medals they clearly deserved. Here, in letters, diaries, and riveting firsthand accounts, is the story of what really happened during those dark days, woven together in a deeply affecting saga of women in war. „We spent our lives helping people, and we did it with honor and love and never looked back.”
The incredible story of Army Nurses serving on the Philippines during World War II. They spent three years in Japanese prison camps, never quitting, they kept tending the sick and wounded.
Norman's writing is impeccable.

This book is everything I want in narrative nonfiction. The author tells it straight, goes deep into individual women‘s stories, and writes like a dream. Imagine singing up for a cushy post in the military—palm trees, golf courses, etc. Then you get bombed by the Japanese, live and work in the jungle, and... ⬇️

BarbaraTheBibliophage ... later in underground tunnels. Then the Japanese march you and your gravely ill patients down a peninsula and put you in prison camp. Yeah, happy story. But the women who lived through this will make you laugh, cry, and cheer. Five stars. I‘d give it more, but that‘s unfair to all the other books out there. 3y
BarbaraBB Wow. Fab review. Stacked. 3y

Started this one for my #philippines choice for #readingasia2021. It‘s like taking the TV show M*A*S*H and dropping it on a jungle island. And as the wife of a Japanese-Filipino-American, I also feel a little more connected to the events. I think it‘s going to work for a #nonfictionchallenge2021 prompt too. Will need to choose when I‘ve heard more.

Librarybelle I‘ve heard a lot of good things about this one but have not had a chance to read it yet. Curious to see what you think! 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Librarybelle I‘m fascinated so far! I read something related a few times years ago, so it‘s not all new. 3y
Amandajoy This is one of my all time favorites. I‘ve read it several times and used it as reference material for a couple of papers in grad school. 3y

Being with English teachers all week means I also start adding to my #TBR list. I also just saw a post on Facebook about this book (it was a list of women in war time books or something to that effect)...so clearly if two places are telling me to read it then I should, right? #womeninlit #history #war

One of my favorite #inspiringreads. We tend to gloss over our military defeats in history. And we tend to forget about the women who have served in the military. This book tells the inspiring story of the nurses who fought along side the men on Bataan after the government abandoned them. They are the women who paved the path for me & inspire me. "No mama, no papa, no Uncle Sam... and nobody gives a damn." #photoadaynov16

I think I've mentioned this book in the past. I cannot suggest it enough if you are a WWII buff. The book moved me. When I was sent to the Philippines for work it amazed me to tour Bataan. Call me crazy but I swear I could feel some of the lost souls. #booksetinasia #somethingforsept @RealLifeReading @TheSpinecrackersBookClub
