Kissing Christmas Goodbye
Kissing Christmas Goodbye: An Agatha Raisin Mystery | M. C. Beaton
14 posts | 30 read | 4 to read
Unlike quite a number of people, Agatha had not given up on Christmas. To have the perfect Christmas had been a childhood dream whilst surviving a rough upbringing in a Birmingham slum. Holly berries glistened, snow fell gently outside, and inside, all was Dickensian jollity. And in her dreams, James Lacey kissed her under the mistletoe, and, like a middle-aged sleeping beauty, she would awake to passion once more.... From M.C. Beaton's Kissing Christmas Goodbye. Agatha Raisin is bored. Her detective agency in the Cotswolds is thriving, but she'll scream if she has to deal with another missing cat or dog. Only two things seem to offer potential excitement: the upcoming Christmas festivities and her ex, James Lacey. This year she is sure that if she invites James to a really splendid, old-fashioned Christmas dinner, their love will rekindle like a warm Yule log. When a wealthy widow hires Agatha because she's convinced a member of her family is trying to kill her, Agatha is intrigued---especially when the widow drops dead after high tea at the manor house. Who in this rather sterile house, complete with fake family portraits, could have hated the old lady enough to poison her? Agatha sets out to find the murderer, all the while managing a pretty, teenage trainee who makes her feel old and planning for a picture-perfect Christmas, with James, all the trimmings, and perhaps even snow.

Agatha and her detective agency take on the case of a woman who feels someone is about to murder her. When she does die, Agatha has to figure out the murderer. Plus, she wants to throw the best Christmas party ever.

This is another fun, quick addition to the series. The voice actress on the version I listened to on Audible is different than the previous series entries, and I was not exactly enthralled with this version. But, still enjoyable!

mabell It is so frustrating to have to adjust to a new voice to an established series! That‘s also why I can‘t listen to audiobooks I‘ve enjoyed in print - I already have decided their voices in my head 😆 7mo
Librarybelle @mabell I think I may have downloaded the wrong version, as the next in the series has the narrator from the others! But yes - it takes a lot to get used to after hearing the same voice. And totally agree about how you think the character sounds one way but hear it differently from a reader! 7mo

Not very Christmassy and I really miss the original narrator Penelope but I really liked the addition of Toni and that Agatha seems to be officially over James Lacey 🙌🏾

I jumped ahead a lot to read this book, so Agatha now has a detective agency. It was a good story, but not super Christmasy. Although there is a great dinner scene that goes horribly, in true Agatha fashion.

Kimzey I laughed out loud during the Christmas dinner scene!

Not much more I can say about this series that I haven‘t said already. Agatha is my faithful companion while I do housework and make dinner. I love listening to these on audiobook. One thing I really enjoy about this series is that the relationships between people seem more realistic and everything is not super predictable. I‘d highly recommend this series! 3.5⭐️

Finished this one this morning. Interesting, but it moved along at a slow pace. The first Agatha Raisin book I have read, and I would be willing to try reading another one. #merryreaders #wintergames @Clwojick Also, this is my #bookspin book! @TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks I still haven't read any Agatha Raisin books!! 3y

It was not as Christmassy as I expected but still one of the better books in this series. I liked the whole Toni-storyline as it showed a different side of Agatha‘s character.

The appearance of the book may seem very snowy and sweet but i assure you, Christmas for Agatha won't be...
PLEASE do read this book!

I finished this one Monday night and forgot to post for #CozyMysteryMonday but this was an interesting book. I'd never read a Beaton book before, particularly the Agatha Raisin series. She has a dry wit, and is quick to temper. While this book was not the most enjoyable, it did peak an interest to check out some of the others in the series. I'd like to get a back story to see what shaped Agatha into who she was by this point. 3.5🌟

Finally, some actual reading done during the #Readathon! Just managed to read the last half of this book in a little over an hour. Don‘t want to spoil any plot points as this seems to start a slightly different turn for the series, but I will say that I enjoyed it. And now, off to start reading something else!
