New York Stories | John O'Hara

Collected for the first time, the New York stories of John O'Hara, "among the greatest short story writers in English, or in any other language" (Brendan Gill, "Here at The New Yorker") Collected for the first time, here are the New York stories of one of the twentieth century s definitive chroniclers of the city the speakeasies and highballs, social climbers and cinema stars, mistresses and powerbrokers, unsparingly observed by a popular American master of realism. Spanning his four-decade career, these more than thirty refreshingly frank, sparely written stories are among John O Hara s finest work, exploring the materialist aspirations and sexual exploits of flawed, prodigally human characters and showcasing the snappy dialogue, telling details and ironic narrative twists that made him the most-published short story writer in the history of the "New Yorker." For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators."

We rolled the dice to see if anyone happened to be in the area and available for a quick bite. Always next time. 😊 7y

I'm going to be in New York for a few days very shortly. I've been to The Strand on a previous visit but are there any other bookstores or bookish places you guys would recommend? Or even just cool/interesting/fun non-bookish places? I'd love some suggestions. Thank you!

jessberk13 I always recommend the Book Cellar. It's uptown at the Webster Library on Park and I wanna say 87th. It's only open a few days a week and for limited hours so look it up first! I have gotten so many amazing finds there! 8y
jessberk13 Also have fun!!! New York is my home ❤️ 8y
Cinfhen Enjoy your trip😊 8y
Erynecki Non bookish place: take a walk on the Highline! 8y
Bookish_B @Rituleenreads putting it on the list. Thank you! 8y
Bookish_B @Lola oh excellent suggestions as I have not been to either. Thank you 👍🏼 8y
Bookish_B @jessica I will check the schedule. Thank you so much! 8y
Bookish_B @Cinfhen thank you 😁 8y
Bookish_B @Erynecki ooh, ok! My friend had actually mentioned this to me on my last trip there but we ran out of time. I'd love to do it this time though. 8y
Cinfhen The highline was great! Was there this summer with my daughter. We ate a delicious 😋 brunch at CookShop in Chelsea, walked the high line and then went to the 9/11 Memorial Museum, which was quite moving and a beautiful tribute to all who perished on that terrible day. If you have time, definitely go 🍸👣👟 8y
LauraBytheBook I second the NY Public Library. We took the tour when we were there in July. 👍🏻 8y
Richryan52 @bookish_b. You must visit the mysterious bookshop on warren street. Ask if you can see the rare book room in the basement 7y

Trying out an audiobook for the first time ever. I'm not an audio-learner (I have to take notes in class or I zone out) but I have to drive a lot these days so I'd love to enjoy audiobooks. At the very least it might help the insomnia...😬 Any audiobook recommendations??

RealLifeReading I only started on audiobooks this yr n what works for me is nonfiction. Cary Elwes' As You Wish. Aziz Ansari's Modern Romance. Mindy Kaling's books. Yup all celebs so far but they read so very well! 8y
subwayreads @RealLifeReading that makes sense! People have told me Yes by Amy Poehler is fantastic on audiobook. 8y
RealLifeReading Oh yup that was a fun audiobook too! She even has Seth Myers, Kathleen Turner, Carol Burnett on it too! And seriously the best part is Patrick Stewart reading plastic surgery haikus! 8y
subwayreads @RealLifeReading downloaded it :) so excited to start! 8y
