The Unkindest Tide
The Unkindest Tide | Seanan McGuire

Now in hardcover, the thirteenth novel of the Hugo-nominated, New York Times-bestselling Toby Daye urban fantasy series! Hundreds of years ago, the Selkies made a deal with the sea witch: they would have the sea for as long as she allowed it, and when the time came, she would call in all their debts at once. Many people assumed that day would never come. Those people were wrong. When the Luidaeg--October "Toby" Daye's oldest and most dangerous ally--tells her the time has come for the Selkies to fulfill their side of the bargain, and that Toby must be a part of the process, Toby can't refuse. Literally. The Selkies aren't the only ones in debt to the Luidaeg, and Toby has to pay what she owes like anyone else. They will travel to the fabled Duchy of Ships and call a convocation of the Selkies, telling them to come and meet the Luidaeg's price...or face the consequences. Of course, nothing is that simple. When Dianda Lorden's brother appears to arrest Dianda for treason against the Undersea, when a Selkie woman is stripped of her skin and then murdered, when everything is falling apart, that's when Toby will have to answer the real question of the hour. Is she going to sink? Or is she going to swim?

Many thanks to @Andrew65 and @TheSpineView for hosting #SeriesLove2023!

I finished 7 novels and 3 novellas in the October Daye series and will be continuing with the 14th novel for #SeriesLove2024.

I only finished 2 books in the Maigret series and 1 in the Malazan series, but as these were especially challenging (Maigret in French, and Reaper's Gale with 900+ pages), I am pleased enough with the progress!

Andrew65 Excellent, 3ell done. Even more impressive reading in another language 👏👏👏 (edited) 4mo

I loved this installment of the October Daye series which features Toby in the company of the Luidaeg and Selkies again.

This was a good #scarathlon point-getter, with all the references to the sea witch and blood magic, and I was thrilled to be able to fill in my “October“ #ISpyBingo square!

When the Luidaeg calls in a favor & a centuries old debt with the Selkies, what can you do? Well, if you‘re Toby Daye, the answer is mouth off, end up covered in blood, & do your damndest to stay afloat.

I love these books so much. Such an interesting mystery wrapped up in frothy mystical worldbuilding that has me obsessed. Questions answered, new questions asked. Backstories unlocked, new characters, and more of the Luidaeg, my love. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

Again, I love love LOVE anything by Seanan McGuire and this did not disappoint! Number 13 in the Toby Daye series, and I hope this series never ends.
No filter- finished reading this by the lake on a hot summer day. As there‘s water, and the book has a very strong water theme, I had to do my selfie here.

Happy New Year! 🎉🎉

1. Hoping to get caught up on this series!
2. Honestly, another year here. After college, seeking out new books seemed so daunting. I mostly reread old favorites. Then I came here. You all have helped me find joy in new books and in pushing my horizons. Thank you. ❤️
3. A few, but the one I‘m most excited about is increasing the amount of nonfiction I read.

#SundayFunday Have a wonderful new year and don‘t forget to tag me!

monalyisha What a sweet note in your second answer! Happy New Year! 🎉💓 2y

Ships, and firstborns, and seasickness, oh my.
As suspected I am loving this books thus far and am only putting it down so I‘m not utterly exhausted at work tomorrow. I am, as always, utterly in love with Seanan McGuire‘s writing.

I invoked librarian privilege and snatched this off the processing shelf like it was going to disappear. And didn't even take a picture of my “crime“. As always, wonderful. Probably isn't my favorite in the series, but definitely a good solid entry. Loved the resolution, even if it should have occurred to the Luidaeg eons before - it was a little *too* neat to have Tobey come up with it.
