Dolly: A Ghost Story | Susan Hill
8 posts | 22 read | 8 to read
The remoter parts of the English Fens are forlorn, lost and damp even in the height of summer. At Iyot Lock, a large decaying house, two young cousins, Leonora and Edward, are parked for the summer with their ageing spinster aunt and her cruel housekeeper. At first the unpleasantness and petty meannesses appear simply spiteful, calculated to destroy Edward's equanimity. But when spoilt Leonora is not given the birthday present of a specific dolly that she wants, affairs inexorably take a much darker turn with terrifying, life-destroying consequences for everyone.

I got this free from Audible. A little slow, but adequately creepy for this time of year. 3 1/2 stars.

LeahBergen I just read this yesterday! 👯‍♀️ 2y

Be nice to your elders and always be grateful for what you have....otherwise an elderly aunt may place a curse upon you. +16 #TeamHarkness #Scarathlon2020 #Screamathon2020

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Another wonder speculative fiction novella from Susan Hill. Her themes of embittered women, greed and selfishness are well defined, as well as the naive and “good” man who is “haunted” by these women.

Powered_By_Plants That cover 😱 freaky! I loved the woman in black by Susan hill 📚 4y

The creepiest thing about this story was the cover. #screamathon @4thhouseontheleft

It says right on the cover that it's a ghost story, but after finishing it I am not sure why. The writing was good, but I went in expecting a haunting tale and it just wasn't that.

alisiakae Too bad it disappointed, it definitely is a creepy cover. 5y

I'm not sure why this book has the subtitle "A Ghost Story" as there are no ghosts. This is my first Susan Hill read. Maybe my expectations were too high but I never found this story scary. The portion where the main character is remembering his childhood was the best part and I thought it was going to get very creepy but then it just fizzled for me. #screamathon
