Krakatoa
Krakatoa: The Day the World Exploded | Simon Winchester
9 posts | 17 read | 24 to read
Simon Winchester's brilliant chronicle of the destruction of the Indonesian island of Krakatoa in 1883 charts the birth of our modern world. He tells the story of the unrecognized genius who beat Darwin to the discovery of evolution; of Samuel Morse, his code and how rubber allowed the world to talk; of Alfred Wegener, the crack-pot German explorer and father of geology. In breathtaking detail he describes how one island and its inhabitants were blasted out of existence and how colonial society was turned upside-down in a cataclysm whose echoes are still felt to this day.

No one is ever going to accuse me of being a science person...with that said I inhaled this one. A ton of history, a lot of science but in a way that's easy to explain and a lot about the countries and islands of the Dutch East Indies. I didn't want to put this one down. #nonfiction #bookspin @thearomaofbooks

I (unfortunately) listened to the audio. It was a male British voice (the author), so I recognized immediately that I was in trouble. I was bored. It didn‘t hold my interest at all. It did seem to start with a lot of historical information about the area (Java, Sumatra). Beyond that, I think it took a long time to get to the volcano, but even then, I wasn‘t really listening. Cont in comments...

LibraryCin For some reason, he went on about Islam at the end, though I‘m unsure as to why. Despite listening to the entire thing, I‘m having to read other summaries and reviews to find out what happened 4y

I read this book in university and feel like I should read it again. A brief article about the volcano from Mental Floss: http://mentalfloss.com/article/67852/10-facts-about-krakatoas-1883-eruption

#aprilbookshowers day 11: set in southeast Asia.

Lauren_reading I've watched a documentary about it- I'll need to pick this up. 7y
rabbitprincess @LaurenReads What was the documentary called? 7y
Lauren_reading http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/krakatoa-great-volcanic-eruption/ I'm pretty sure this was the one I saw - it was awhile ago! 7y

I volunteer at my local library sorting donated books. A perk is that we can buy books for book sale prices ($1-2). I put this gem aside on Tuesday because I didn't have any change. My husband says my volunteering is breaking the bank 😬

Hooked_on_books I loved this book! What a bargain!🌋 (edited) 7y
