A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF THE YEAR "Elaborate and playful...Honest and deeply felt....Here is the Quindlen wit, the sharp eye for the details of class and manners, [and] the ardent reading of domestic lives." -THE NEW YORK TIMES It is the 1960s, in suburban New York City. Maggie and her family, are in the thrall of her powerful grandfather Jack Scanlan. In the summer of her twelfth year, Maggie is despertately trying to master the object lessons her grandfather fills her head with. But there is too much going on to concentrate. Everything at home is in upheaval, her grandfather is changing, and Maggie is unsure if what she wants is worth having.... From the Trade Paperback edition.

Bailedbailed

I really don't bail much, but with 100 pages to go in this, I just couldn't any more. The only reason I kept going was because this was supposed to be my #LetterQ for #LitsyAtoZ. I think a lot of people would enjoy this, but I just didn't feel compelled to pick this up, I didn't care for the story or the characters.

Reggie Have you read Black and Blue by her? It‘s sad but sooooo good. 7y
Kalalalatja @Reggie @BarbaraBB maybe I should try it at some point, but not right now. I think I need a break from Quindlen (edited) 7y

Pickpick

Stayed up late to finish this book by Anna Quindlen. As the story progressed, I could empathize with Maggie as she struggled with being 13 and losing her best friend. Every family has struggles and this Scanlon family was made stronger in the end. Great book.
