The Train
The Train | Georges Simenon
3 posts | 4 read | 3 to read
Against all expectations Marcel Fe?ron has made a normal life in a bucolic French suburb in the Ardennes. But on May 10, 1940, as Nazi tanks approach, this timid, happy man must abandon his home and confront the Fate that he has secretly awaited. Separated from his pregnant wife and young daughter in the chaos of flight, he joins a freight car of refugees hurtling southward ahead of the pursuing invaders. There, he meets Anna, a sad-looking, dark- haired girl, whose accent is neither Belgian nor German, and who seemed foreign to everything around her. As the mystery of Annas identity is gradually revealed, Marcel leaps from the heights of an exhilarating freedom to the depths of a terrifying responsibilityone that will lead him to a blood-chilling choice. When it first appeared in English in 1964, British novelist and critic Brigid Brophy declared The Train to be the novel his admirers had been expecting all along from Simenon. Until The Train, she wrote, the dazzlingly prolific novelist had been a master without a masterpiece. From the Trade Paperback edition.

A non-Maigret Simenon 🚂🚃🚃🚃
Set in France at the outbreak of WWII, Marcel Féron is separated from his pregnant wife and 4 year old daughter as they flee the Nazi invasion. Things start to happen on the refugee train he finds himself on, things involving a mysterious sad-looking woman, the nature of which I am yet to discover. Read on!👉📖

vivastory I have only read non-Maigret Simenon so far (except for one Maigret story) 11mo
Bookwomble @vivastory I'm the other way round - I've only read one non-Maigret, but that was also excellent so I'm feeling no trepidation at starting this one. I love that Simenon wrote so many books I'm not likely to run out of them. One advantage of finding a prolific author later in life 👴🏻😁 11mo

Someone was nice enough to put a scarf around the statue

Lmstraubie I've seen that done in parks around trees & lampposts, but they are meant to be taken - little random acts of kindness. 😍 7y
saresmoore Our neighborhood's little downtown area has knitted and crocheted cozies around the skinny tree trunks lining the sidewalk. I think it's an art installation, but one can never be sure with these things. 🤔 7y
Donna_sBookMinute @Lmstraubie is right. I've seen it done for that reason too. It looks cute though. 7y

LauraBeth @Lmstraubie, @saresmoore, @Donna_sBookMinute ahhhh - what a special thing to do 😀 7y
lynneamch @saresmoore The one place I have seen these around trees and lightpoles in our town is the library. 😊📚👏 7y
diovival There's a big dinosaur statue near our main public library and it wears a scarf in the winter. His name is Dippy. 😄 7y
RealBooks4ever @diovival A dinosaur statue?! How wonderful! 💜💜💜 7y
diovival @RealBooks4ever Dippy has his own Wiki (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dippy) and Facebook and Twitter. An article from 2015 said he has never been graffitied. Fingers crossed this is still true! Dippy is great. ❤ 7y
LauraBeth @diovival I just read about Dippy - what a cute ambassador for your library! Where on that long beck does it wear the scarf 😂 7y
LauraBeth @lynneamch I'll pay more attention to this next winter 😀 7y
