Sunset Song
Sunset Song | Lewis Grassic Gibbon
19 posts | 10 read | 28 to read
Faced with a choice between her harsh farming life and the seductive but distant world of books and learning, Chris Guthrie eventually decides to remain in her rural community, bound by her intense love of the land. However, the intervention of the First World War leaves her choice in tatters. Chris is now a widowed single mother: her farm, and the land it occupies, is altered beyond recognition - trees torn down, people displaced. But although the novel describes a way of life which is in decline, it also presents a strong image of hope. Chris adapts to her new world, displaying an intuitive strength which, like the land which she loves, endures despite everything. "Sunset Song" is a testament to Scotland's agricultural past, to the world of crofters and tradition which was destroyed in the First World War. It is a powerful description of life in the first few decades of the century through the evocation of change and the lyrical intensity of its prose. Renowned expert Ian Campbell has produced the first new scholarly text for fifteen years and has the blessing of the Lewis Grassic Gibbon estate.

#wondrouswednesday @Eggs Sorry to be so dilatory in responding to the tag-too much going on, but better late than never. 1. Recent photo-since moving to Fl last year we have enjoyed many wondrous sunsets, & I've taken dozens of photos. Here's a recent one.
2. I just returned from Tex for a visit with my Mom-1st time seeing her in 3 years, due to husband's transplant and then covid.
3. Grateful for family.

Cathythoughts Beautiful picture! That‘s a long time waiting to see your Mom ❤️ 2y

Another obscure word. Day 7 #Abendrot
- die Felder lagen im Abendrot, translates as: the fields lay bathed in the glow of the sunset or in the light of the setting sun - (or at least I hope it does @ju.ca.no)

@tournevis 👍

tournevis In French, we have an excellent synonym, one of my favourite words: brunante. I'll do mine this pm. 4y
MayJasper That's a lovely word @tournevis Oh I wish I was in France now. Damn Covid-19. This time last year we were enjoying a holiday and wine festival in Carcassonne. Lovely memories. 4y
tournevis @MayJasper That word is no longer used in France much, completely replaced by crépuscule. It's mostly used in North American French-language. 4y

Mehso-so

*Not part of my Christmas countdown :)

This was more enjoyable than most people said it would be, however the language was slightly dreary (and not much happened!) I wouldn't say that I am looking forward to analysing it for the next 6 months, but I liked it more than last year's text!

Writing an essay on the characterisation of Jean Guthrie wasn't exactly what I had in mind for my holidays... 😣

Don't read the essay too closely - may contain spoilers 😉

Obviously I love reading but studying? Not so much! When I'm not working towards my Highers (or reading!) I love to be outside. I relate to Chris much more than I ever thought I could.

I have only just started using Litsy and it is officially my new favourite app :)

My Reading Envy Road Trip brought me to Scotland. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Yesterday, my wife Lisa and I traveled to the tiny village of Arbuthnott in NE Scotland to the Lewis Grassic Gibbon Center which features a small museum with a number of artifacts from James‘ short life (1901-1935), a gift shop and a cafe. Sunset Song took place in this area so we were able to visit many sites from the novel. It was like being in Sunset Song. #readingenvyroadtrip

Congratulations @BarbaraBB and thank you for the generous giveaway 😘

This book hasn‘t got many reviews on Litsy or Goodreads but I loved it. It‘s been years since I read it but I still remember the characters and the setting vividly. #spotlightgiveaway

Pickpick

I picked this book because my wife and I are returning to Scotland this summer and I wanted to read a book set there. I started the audiobook and there were so many words I didn‘t know that I obtained a paper copy for the (8 page!) glossary. This book was absolutely fantastic! Worthy of its accolades! The narration by Scottish actress Eileen McCallum is probably the best I‘ve heard. She adds to every sentence and even sings a few songs. Love.

Some stellar used book finds this weekend... Really pleased 🤗 Tagged book is apparently a Scottish classic with an introduction by Ali Smith, and When Harlem Was in Vogue is a new to me title that sounds amazing. The other two were on my TBR. #bookhaul

EvieBee Nice haul!!! Which one are you going to start first? 6y
batsy Hahaha @EvieBee I'm so ashamed, I should probably start with one of the many books from previous hauls 😆 But most likely Le Guin since #EarthseaChapterADay has given me a taste of her work 🙂 6y
batsy @Leftcoastzen Yay, glad to hear it! I flipped through it and I had to have it. 6y
LeahBergen I‘ve been meaning to read Sunset Song. 👍🏻 6y
2BR02B Just finished The Dispossessed last week. It was certainly different from Earthsea... I'm still processing my thoughts on it. 6y
readinginthedark Ooh, I‘ve never heard of the tagged book, but the description reminds me of Willa Cather! I‘ll have to read it. 6y
batsy @LeahBergen @readinginthedark Yes, it does sound like Willa Cather (another author I need to read 😳) 6y
batsy @2BR02B Look forward to your review! It's seems more hard SF than fantasy just based on description. 6y
LeahBergen Be quiet, @batsy ! Now the Willa Cathers on my shelves are staring accusingly at me. 😂 6y
batsy @LeahBergen Oh no, not the judgy early 20th-century stare! 😂 6y
readinginthedark @batsy @LeahBergen Well, I think Cather would be more than understanding 😆 but she‘s definitely worth the read! 6y
saresmoore Wowza! These look great! 6y

“The best Scottish book of all time” has not disappointed so far. Such colorful language and great writing. I‘m listening on Audible but bought a cheap paper copy for the EIGHT PAGE glossary in order to understand what was going on.

You hated the land and the coarse speak of the folk and learning was brave and fine one day and the next you‘d waken with the peewits crying across the hills, deep and deep, crying in the heart of you and the smell of the earth in your face, almost you‘d cry for that, the beauty of it and the sweetness of the Scottish land and skies.
