Paperweight | Meg Haston
In the vein of Laurie Halse Anderson's Wintergirls, this emotionally haunting and beautifully written young adult debut delves into the devastating impact of trauma and loss.Seventeen-year-old Stevie is trapped. In her life. In her body. And now in an eating-disorder treatment center on the dusty outskirts of the New Mexico desert. Life in the center is regimented and intrusive, a nightmare come true. Nurses and therapists watch Stevie at meal time, accompany her to the bathroom, and challenge her to eat the foods she's worked so hard to avoid. Her dad has signed her up for sixty days of treatment. But what no one knows is that Stevie doesn't plan to stay that long. There are only twenty-seven days until the anniversary of her brother Josh's deaththe death she caused. And if Stevie gets her way, there are only twenty-seven days until she, too, will end her life.Paperweight follows Stevie's journey as she struggles not only with this life-threatening eating disorder, but with the question of whether she can ever find absolution for the mistakes of her pastand whether she truly deserves to.

I thought this book was beautiful and emotionally deep. Walking through the treatment center with all the characters was heartbreaking and yet relatable. Very seldom do we speak about ED and the demons that come with it. Beautifully devastating.

“We are a collection of lost causes, stashed here so no one has to see just how wounded we are.”

This book was an insightful journey of a young girl dealing with personal loss and an eating disorder. Definitely something new for me to read. Though there were some things left unanswered, it was a good, quick read.

This book was fantastic. It was a bit confusing at first, but then everything fell into pace.

This book is about a girl, who is committed to a treatment facility because she suffers from anorexia. An eating disorder that can and often kills its sufferers. Stevie doesn't care about dying, in fact, she plans on it.

If a book is going to include mental illness in its plot, I believe it should be held accountable for realistically portraying that illness. Haston did a great job doing just that with this novel whose main character has anorexia. My only complaint is that the major secret was held so long and when revealed felt anticlimactic as a result.

Paperweight is a hard-hitting contemporary YA that looks at eating disorders, toxic friendships and grief. Although it was a very difficult book for me to read, I'm glad that I did as it had an amazing depiction of therapy and recovery.

I really liked this book for a lot of reasons. It reminded me a little bit of Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson. It dove deep into the topic of bulimia which I feel is something that isn‘t really brought up enough in Young Adult literature. But, the story didn‘t just center around the eating disorder, it also takes the reader through feelings of loss, guilt, self hatred, and so much more. I thought this was a great YA pick!

The main character definitely grew on me & I loved how she developed. However since I prefer plot driven books, I ended up giving it 3/5 ⭐️'s.

Wow this was a difficult book to read. Stevie is seventeen and has an eating disorder. Being in her mind is pretty uncomfortable. It is sad to see the way she perceives herself. It was so beautifully written and a really, really good book. But difficult. #boutofbooks

This was my first Meg Haston book and I was just unimpressed. It felt really unrealistic and repetitive. I'll try more of her writing but I don't think I'll reach to reread this one. Full review at https://howlinglibraries.wordpress.com/2017/03/29/paperweight/

A really emotionally raw and heavy book, but quite the page turner for me. Haston is able to put you in Stevie's shoes as you go through her journey with her and her writing lets allows the reader to understand the Stevie and her eating-disorder in a very honest and real way. I really loved it.
