In a community that isn't always understanding, an HIV-positive teen must navigate fear, disclosure, and radical self-acceptance when she falls in love--and lust--for the first time. Powerful and uplifting, Full Disclosure will speak to fans of Angie Thomas and Nicola Yoon. Simone Garcia-Hampton is starting over at a new school, and this time things will be different. She's making real friends, making a name for herself as student director of Rent, and making a play for Miles, the guy who makes her melt every time he walks into a room. The last thing she wants is for word to get out that she's HIV-positive, because last time . . . well, last time things got ugly. Keeping her viral load under control is easy, but keeping her diagnosis under wraps is not so simple. As Simone and Miles start going out for real--shy kisses escalating into much more--she feels an uneasiness that goes beyond butterflies. She knows she has to tell him that she's positive, especially if sex is a possibility, but she's terrified of how he'll react! And then she finds an anonymous note in her locker: I know you have HIV. You have until Thanksgiving to stop hanging out with Miles. Or everyone else will know too. Simone's first instinct is to protect her secret at all costs, but as she gains a deeper understanding of the prejudice and fear in her community, she begins to wonder if the only way to rise above is to face the haters head-on. . . .

An incredibly important YA novel about a teen who‘s HIV+. It was informative and moving. Navigating HS is hard enough & Simone has the added fear of someone telling her secret when anon notes begin showing up with that threat.

I loved when she showed her vulnerability & when others embraced her. She has a strength & determination that‘s admirable; however, at times I felt she was judgmental & rude toward her friends who were supportive of her.

Reading Full Disclosure for #booked2022 Living With AIDS/HIV prompt. Trying to get past my incredulity and fury at the early scene where a GYN sees a 17yo for her sex questions without even trying to kick her dad out of the room. NO, PEOPLE, THIS IS NOT NORMAL OR HOW IT IS DONE. Signed, a doctor with an interest in adolescent and sexual health.

On my hook : cotton summer boobs for a friend

Smrloomis Summer boobs? What does that mean? Just curious 😂 2y

What a wonderful book and story this was! This book gave me a new perspective on HIV and those living with HIV. I couldn‘t put this book down on several occasions because it kept me wanting more, but bedtimes and such… haha. Definitely recommend!

🎧 This was a recommendation from someone who picked up the book but hadn‘t read it yet. The cover‘s pretty so I was all in. #sharreadathon

Well it‘s definitely YA & I saw everything coming a mile away BUT the narrator was perfect & the story was sweet! I really enjoyed it.

Simone is a 17 yo who was born with HIV. She has 2 overprotective dads that adopted her at birth.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 👇🏻

Twainy We catch up with her 6 months after she switched from an all girl boarding school to a co-Ed school near home. She has 2 new BFFs, is the director of the school play & is dating her first crush.

The drama of 1st kisses & sex, trusting friends, fear of her secret getting out again & living with HIV under control is all addressed. The dialog was believable & silly sweet at times.

Good solid book.

Took me a bit to get into, but after the first quarter I was invested in Simone's story.

Sort of spoiler(??) I didn't feel too much about the resolution. I feel like the bully could've somehow been explored more, or maybe the author hadn't thought that much about wrapping up the novel, because much of it felt rushed. Nowhere near enough to ruin the main narrative and the message of it all, but I was left wishing for a little more detail.

The story of a HIV positive teen and her struggle to navigate her high school years, this is an eye opening book dealing with a difficult subject. While I found the writing a bit awkward in places, but as the debut novel of the author dealing with such a difficult but important subject, I give it some leeway. The novel was informative, intersectional, and positive. I give it a pick overall.

A revelation! Simone Garcia-Hampton, a funny, artsy, bi(curious), and HIV-positive teen, must learn how to navigate self-love and racism in a not-always-accepting community, especially after what happened at her last high school when they found out about her status... Perfect for readers looking for original and different YA stories. Very feminist, diverse, sex-positive and surprisingly informative.

I've been more into audiobooks lately than I have my entire life.
It definitely passes the time at work and helps me get some reading in since I'm usually too tired to do any physical reading.🤍💙

Onto my 3rd audiobook of this month and as well as the year so far.

This story‘s about high schooler, musical loving, Simone. She was born with HIV and is at her 2nd high school after being exposed and harassed. She is managing the school‘s production of Rent where she falls for a boy named Miles. As their attraction to each other furthers and she realizes she has to disclose her status, someone starts leaving threatening notes saying they know what she has. This is the first YA that made me feel that 👇🏼

Reggie teenagers were exhausting. BUT, I never went through what these characters were going through either. There‘s a lot going on in here, a lot of representation, a lot of much needed HIV fact education, and a lot of drama. It was extra for a first book. Overall, a pick. 4y
kspenmoll Thoughtful review! I co teach 9th & 12th grade English. While we are doing literature circles right now with dystopian themes.( a stretch for me, not my favorite genre), This book sounds well worth me reading to assess for another literature circle unit. 9th grade? (edited) 4y
Reggie @kspenmoll Thank you! How is that going? Do they see the world ending or is it hopeful still for them? 4y
See All 19 Comments
Reggie @kspenoll no, and the only reason I say that is because there is a scene where 3 girls sneak into a sex shop to get a sex toy. There is frank and open discussion of masturbation, of sex between females. Of a relationship where one person is asexual and the other is sexual. There is a sex scene in here between the main character and her boyfriend. Not graphic but it‘s in there. I can‘t imagine any school being that sex positive. 4y
kspenmoll @Reggie Thanks for asking. Will keep you posted. Just started Wednesday, so its early times. The students choose books from a pre selected group of books, then form small groups, read, choose how much to read daily & fill out a form to generate discussion. Generally they seem hopeful, but are worried about climate change, pollution, etc. They just finished Julius Caesar during the 4y
kspenmoll Impeachment process which we integrated as comparison to questions of governance, power, etc. So the dystopian continues an exploration of some of the same questions. 4y
kspenmoll @Reggie Got it! Thanks for your warnings! You are right regarding Boards of Ed !!! 4y
CarolynM Sounds like an interesting read. Stacked. 4y
Chrissyreadit @Reggie you‘re probably right - and teens are so much more complex and self educated now in many ways- homeschool sex Ed is amazing- I sent my daughter to a red tent every month where over a year everything and anything was discussed and taught all of it to her brother. Plus we frequently played cards against humanity. My co workers and I made a box of “sex”words- every kind to use with teens and help them feel safe and body positive too. 4y
Reggie @Chrissyreadit That‘s awesome! And you‘re right, they know so much more earlier these days. Thanks internet. 4y
Centique My daughter has watched every episode of that show Sex Education? My hub just started watching it and tells me “ok now she knows EVERYTHING” 😂😂😂 Anyway, as you can imagine, I‘m pro learning on this. 👍 4y
Reggie @Centique Lol, I haven‘t watched the show. That‘s awesome though that she‘s learning and she has no shame about it. Good for ya‘ll!!! 4y
Nute Sounds like a needed book to keep the dialogue of HIV informational facts going amongst our young teen folks. Stacking! 4y
Reggie @Nute definitely. Sometimes I forget to see the forest for the trees. 4y
Rissreads This discussion has been awesome! Stacking the book and the show, thanks @Centique. I‘m pro learning too! 4y
Centique @Rissreads oh I should say that it‘s a comedy show rather than a documentary or anything! I must watch it myself because they tell me it‘s funny. 👍👍 4y
Rissreads @Centique I did realise that! I‘m sure I will learn a lot though! 😂 (edited) 4y
ephemeralwaltz @Reggie I'm currently reading this!! I wish I had had more books like this when I was a teen. I didn't know anything about HIV or sexually diverse teen relationships at the time. This is wonderful so far! My jaw just drops at the thought of how much we missed and I'm so glad there are these new stories being represented in YA! 3y
Reggie @ephemeralwaltz it‘s funny when I joined Litsy I had never read YA. There were some snobs on here that would say that‘s too YA. And then based off some good reviews by people I liked and trusted I tried one out and was amazed at how good YA can be. They tackle and discuss soooo much. I‘m glad you‘re liking it. If you feel like you‘re in the mood for another one after this try Camp by L.C. Rosen. 3y

I‘m glad this book exists to hopefully help educate people & let other HIV positive teens see themselves represented. Simone is a strong young woman who is also allowed to be real, & I liked her a good deal. But this is def a debut—writing felt soapbox-ish at times, the outing subplot felt unnecessary & I was not thrilled w/who was behind it & why. Dialogue was often odd in a way I can‘t fully articulate. Not a bad book, but not a standout. 3/5 ⭐️

Okay yes, SF area housing prices are ridiculous, but um, most people don‘t have multiple guest rooms unless they‘re rich? Fuck, most people around here don‘t have ONE guest room...they have a couch or an Aerobed in the living room. The author is from NY so it‘s not like she grew up somewhere super cheap where every middle class family had three guest rooms or something. This is just a weird thing to say.

Caterina This is so weird! Never heard of more than 1 guest room unless you're a millionaire or billionaire. Also I'm in the Bay Area and all I have is an air mattress in my studio 😂😂 4y
Megabooks I live in a reasonably priced area and we only have one guestroom. I think hotel is the word she‘s searching for. 4y

Considering I just saw something about a study that shows a significant number of teens think you can get HIV from handshakes and toilet seats and stuff, I‘m really glad this book exists and I hope it‘ll be great so I can recommend it to all those dodos. (Well, and to their garbage schools that apparently aren‘t teaching them any better.) #nowreading

HIV and Aids is around, we know more about the disease but people are still scared to be around people who have it. When Simone is transferred to a new school all she wants is to be normal and keep her secret. Then she is falling for a classmate Miles and she struggles with telling him the truth about her secret. Then a mysterious letters start showing up in her locker and it says I know your secret. Leave Miles alone or else I will tell him.

BookNightOwl I enjoyed this read. It was something different than other YA books you read out there. I loved the representation of her two dads. One Hispanic and the other one African american. Overall it was a good read. 4y

Stunning cover for a stellar debut! This was a fast read full of personality. The author crafts Simone‘s story with tenderness, honesty, and respect.
