Something Rich and Strange
Something Rich and Strange: Selected Stories | Ron Rash
6 posts | 3 read | 18 to read
From the acclaimed, New York Times bestselling award-winning author of Serena and The Cove, thirty of his finest short stories, collected in one volume. No one captures the complexities of Appalachiaa rugged, brutal landscape of exquisite beautyas evocatively and indelibly as author and poet Ron Rash. Winner of the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award, two O Henry prizes, and a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award, Rash brilliantly illuminates the tensions between the traditional and the modern, the old and new south, tenderness and violence, man and nature. Though the focus is regional, the themes of Rashs work are universal, striking an emotional chord that resonates deep within each of our lives. Something Rich and Strange showcases this revered masters artistry and craftsmanship in thirty stories culled from his previously published collections Nothing Gold Can Stay, Burning Bright, Chemistry, and The Night New Jesus Fell to Earth. Each work of short fiction demonstrates Rashs dazzling ability to evoke the heart and soul of this land and its peoplemen and women inexorably tethered to the geography that defines and shapes them. Filled with suspense and myth, hope and heartbreak, told in language that flows like shimmering, liquid poetry (Atlanta Journal Constitution), Something Rich and Strange is an iconic work from an American literary virtuoso.

Another stunning book from Rash! I‘m discovering so many great new-to-me authors this year! Thank you for the rec @jlhammar 🙌🏻💜

This best of short story collection spans time from the Civil War until now and highlights Rash‘s deep insight into and love for the people of the Blue Ridge (Appalachian) Mountains who live hard lives but hang in and show remarkable resilience and care for each other.

jlhammar Yay, that makes me so happy! Loved this collection. 6mo
Tamra Ron Rash is great! 6mo
Chelsea.Poole Great photo! I read Serena years ago for book club, I should try another. 6mo

Megabooks @Tamra agree!! 💯💯 6mo
BarbaraBB I‘ve discovered so many new authors too this year, loving it. I will check out Rash too! (edited) 6mo
Megabooks @Chelsea.Poole that one is on my list. I loved his latest if you‘re looking for a novel as opposed to stories. It gives Fresh Water for Flowers vibes but more straightforward plot. 6mo
Megabooks @BarbaraBB he really reads very true to North Carolina. He evokes great emotions and a strong sense of place. I think you‘d enjoy him! 5mo
Chelsea.Poole I saw your review of that one so it‘s on my radar! I still need to read Fresh Water for Flowers too 🫣 5mo

This book was a gift from an aunt a few years ago, she‘s the one that got me reading the works of Ron Rash. This one of the books I recommend or give as a gift to readers I know. It is collection of short stories that get better with time and that you can pick up for a quick read every now and then.

Lately, I‘ve been trying to choose authors I haven‘t heard of. I was mostly drawn to the title with this one.

1. Pic of cookies from Google because, sadly, I have not yet made them this season.
2. Something Rich and Strange by Ron Rash
3. Dark Chocolate 🍫
4. Ragweed (ahhhhhh...life in the South) 😷
5. My least favorite color, so it's a book spine across the room on my bookshelf 📚
