NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER For fans of Game of Silence, Sleepers is the extraordinary true story of four men who take the law into their own hands. This is the story of four young boys. Four lifelong friends. Intelligent, fun-loving, wise beyond their years, they are inseparable. Their potential is unlimited, but they are content to live within the closed world of New York Citys Hells Kitchen. And to play as many pranks as they can on the denizens of the street. They never get caught. And they know they never will. Until one disastrous summer afternoon. On that day, what begins as a harmless scheme goes horrible wrong. And the four find themselves facing a years imprisonment in the Wilkinson Home for Boys. The oldest of them is fifteen, the youngest twelve. What happens to them over the course of that yearbrutal beatings, unimaginable humiliationwill change their lives forever. Years later, one has become a lawyer. One a reporter. And two have grown up to be murderers, professional hit men. For all of them, the pain and fear of Wilkinson still rages within. Only one thing can erase it. Revenge. To exact it, they will twist the legal system. Commandeer the courtroom for their agenda. Use the wiles they observed on the streets, the violence they learned at Wilkinson. If they get caught this time, they only have one thing left to lose: their lives. Praise for Sleepers Undeniably powerful, an enormously affecting and intensely human story . . . Sleepers is a thriller, to be sure, but it is equally a wistful hymn to another age.The Washington Post Book World A gut-wrenching piece of work . . . [Lorenzo] Carcaterras graphic narrative grips like gunfire in a dark alley. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution A terrifying account of brutality and retribution, searing in its emotional truth, peopled with murderers, sadists, and thugs, but biblical in its passion and scope.People Sleepers is so many things: a Dickensian portrait of coming of age in Hells Kitchen, a terrifying and heartbreaking account of the brutalization of youth, a shockingand disturbingly satisfyingclimax worthy of the finest suspense novel. A brilliant, troubling, important book.Jonathan Kellerman Compelling.USA Today From the Paperback edition.

A story of friendship that runs deeper than blood. Four friends are sent to a boy‘s reformatory school after a prank goes horribly wrong. That school changes their hearts and scars their souls. When a chance of revenge arises, they take it.

I couldn‘t put this down once I started. The childhood innocence in the beginning was just somehow more precious given what happened later.

A big thank you to @Sleepswithbooks for the loan! #litsylovereads

A story of 4 childhood friends, 1 shared trauma, 4 different life outcomes and 1 plan of vengeance against those who wronged them.

A phenomenal story, based on true events that reads like pure fiction. Don't ruin the storyline for yourself by reading too much into the description.

Excellent story telling that is almost too vivid in the middle. Gut-wrenching but healing at the same time. This one will stick with me. Highly recommended.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I got through the toughest part of this book... was definitely not easy and it makes it worse knowing this is a true story. Although, it helps a lot that this book reads like a fiction.

But on to part 3. I can't wait to read how these boys have shaped their own destinies after the gut-wrenching traumas they endured. Excellent and eye opening story about the everlasting bond of true friendship. One that will forever haunt me in my career.

"It was in those on uninhabited moments of pretend play that we were allowed the luxury of childhood. Faced by outsiders, we had to be tough, acting older than our years. In our homes we had to be wary, never knowing when the next violent moment would come. When we were alone we could be who we really were - kids." - Shakes

TheNeverendingTBR Read this years ago, it's such a beautifully written and tragic story. 3y
LoverOfLearning @TheNeverendingTBR Yes, it is. I work with survivors of sexual assault for my job and hearing their stories never ever get easier, especially when it's a child. I keep putting the book down afraid that the tragedy will take place on the next page. This will be a difficult read for sure. 3y

Sleeper (colloq.):
1. Out-of-town hit man who spends the night after a social contract is completed.
2. A juvenile sentenced to serve any period longer than nine months in a state-managed facility.

This non-fiction has both. I'm hooked! It reads like a fiction and it's going to become gut-wrenching soon... 😩

A story of 4 childhood friends, 1 shared trauma, 4 different life outcomes and 1 plan of vengeance against those who wronged them.

The kind of book where you don't really want to say you enjoyed it, given the subject matter and the fact that it's (supposedly) nonfiction, but it was definitely captivating. And during the part of the book set at the Wilkinson School for Boys, a nice way of saying juvenile detention center or reform school, there were times when I felt anxious and dreaded the next few pages. I don't think a book has ever done that to me before.

LoverOfLearning I'm starting part 3 of this book. I am so glad the worst part of the story is over. Absolutely gut-wrenching tragedy these boys went through. 3y

About 70 pages to go in this harrowing mesmerizing memoir. During the part of the book set at the Wilkinson School for Boys there were times when I felt anxious and dreaded the next few pages. I don‘t think a book has ever done that to me before!

JackOBotts My friend and I were enthralled by this as teens (likely the film adaptation with Brad Pitt and Brad Renfro). Just horrific. This is was my path to discovering the Count of Monte Cristo... 4y
TheKidUpstairs I was reading this post thinking, "this sounds a lot like a movie I've seen. What was the name of that one....?" Yup, my brain is working slowly today! ?‍♀️ 4y

I saw this film about 20 years ago and hadn‘t realised there was a book.
As harrowing as the story is it‘s a real page turner,as much as I loved it I was a little disappointed, I thought the book would give a little more in regards to life for the boys after Wilkinson‘s . It jumps from them being 13 to adulthood.
After reading the book I bought the film , left feeling sad for those who were lost because of experiences. One that stays with you

I read this Hell‘s Kitchen set true crime/ revenge story donkey‘s years ago.... but remember finding it unputdownable!
Four young boys, a childhood prank goes horribly wrong, and they spend years being imprisoned and brutally abused. Then this tale takes a turn, as the boys become men, and revenge consumes them.
As is often the case, #goodbookterriblemovie 🤦‍♀️

I've neglected this one for too long, time to jump back in. Also, y'all, that cookie butter in the background is now all I'm going to live on. #sustenance. I cannot believe I haven't discovered it before now.

LA_Mead There's a thing called cookie butter? Going to have to see if they sell that in my neck of the woods. 8y

Starting this beauty that's been sitting on my shelf since January. And yes, I'm one of those who remove the jacket while reading. 😌 Anyone else? Dustcover on or off?

BookJunkie429 It depends, I usually leave it on until it annoys me. 8y
Gayan Always off. I sit them up on top of my TBR bookshelf. 8y
Josie Always off! @Gayan I put mine on the top of my TBR too! Safe and sound and no way for it to get chewed up by dogs or torn up by a baby! 8y
Gayan @Josie Exactly. I just call it book art. 8y
