Shardik
Shardik | Richard Adams
12 posts | 11 read | 8 to read
This brilliantly inventive fantasy epic by the award-winning author of Watership Down immerses the reader in a medieval world complete with created languages, detailed maps and elaborate traditions and rituals. Centring on the long-awaited reincarnation of a giant bear among the half-barbaric Orelgan people, Shardik's appearance sets off a violent chain of events as faith in his divinity sweeps the land. Closest to the bear is the hunter Kelderek, a naturally pious, ignorant, well-meaning man who becomes - in his dedication to Shardik - a prophet, victorious soldier, corrupt priest-king and ruler of an empire. A gripping tale of war, adventure, morality and slavery, horror and romance, Shardik is a remarkable exploration of mankind's universal desire for divine incarnation, and the corrosive influence of power. Recently ranked in the top 100 bestsellers over the past 40 years by the Sunday times, Shardik is a book for our age.

Shardik for 75p today, couldn't resist. I thought Watership Down was fantastic (although the movie is terrifying, and I'm not sure why I watched it so many times as a kid).
It was The Dark Tower series that put Shardik back into my consciousness though, as it's one I had never read and forgotten existed

BookwormM I knew I recognised the name in the dark tower now I know why thank you 🤣🤣 13mo

Richard Adams second book is an ambitious fantasy that asks questions about the nature of faith and that reminds me of Game of Thrones even if it can be a mix bag. Learn more in my video review about Shardik. https://youtu.be/UuKmrZ7XWNQ

Picking this oldie but goodie as I think it needs more readers. Cute bunnies ain't got nothing on a raging grizzly bear. 🐇🐻

Anybody know this one? I admit I bought it mostly because "Richard Adams" and it being one dollar . . . and the bear. Mostly the bear. Kind of a fool for bears. Especially red-eyed killer ones.

Soubhiville I read the first 150 pages and bailed. It was during a move, though, and I just couldn't concentrate on it, I may go back at some point. 3y
CherylDeFranceschi I've read Maia, which is in the same world, and really enjoyed it. I have this one, but haven't tackled it yet. 3y
SGJ Oh, same-world stuff. That's always enticing. Instant nostalgia, like. 3y

CherylDeFranceschi @SGJ Well said! That's exactly what it's like! 3y
Shemac77 Does Stephen King reference this in The Dark Tower series? 3y
SGJ Hunh, don't know. 3y
Bsan Yes he sure does. Shardik is a huge cyborg bear that is one of the 12 guardians of the beam. Shows up in the waste lands and there is an awesome color picture of it in the book 3y
SGJ Wow, nice. 3y
EllesInBookland Wow, that's a blast from the past, I read this ages ago! I had just read Watership Down, which I loved, and a friend recommended it. It wasn't as good as Watership but I liked it. Are you reading it? 3y
SGJ Bot yet, no. 3y

A bear who is seen as the power of God, people capture it and use it to create an empire. Shows how the corruption of a message for personal gain can be devastating and horrific for all. There are themes of corruption, prophecy, sacrifice, and suffering. 7/10. It tends to drag in some areas.

MrBook Nice cover. 3y
