Witches of East End | Melissa de la Cruz
23 posts | 53 read | 37 to read
*Read the novel that inspired the major TV drama Witches of East End, starring Julia Ormond and Jenna Dewan-Tatum* Freya, Ingrid and Joanna Beauchamp love their sleepy life in North Hampton. A new engagement, an interesting job, a happy home - life is perfect. Yet these women are harbouring a centuries-old secret: they are powerful witches forbidden to practise magic. But when a young woman turns up dead, it soon becomes clear to the Beauchamp women that it's time to come out of hiding and fight the dark forces that are brewing. Fraught with love affairs, witchcraft, mythology and an unforgettable battle between good and evil, Witches of East End is a deliciously fun and magical read from Melissa de la Cruz, author of the bestselling Blue Bloods series. *Originally published as Witches of the East in the United Kingdom*

My choices for Group W - Witches 🧙🏻‍♀️

Thoughts, feelings?
@suvata @DGRachel @IndoorDame

If anyone else is wanting to join in:
I started Group M - Murderbooks, which has 1 more spot if anyone is interested! 🔪

IndoorDame These all look fun! I‘ll be happy with whatever you choose. I read some of the Sabrina arc a few years back and loved it, but I didn‘t know there was a prequel novel. 13mo
DGRachel A Witch‘s Guide to Fake Dating sounds delightful, but I‘m game for any of them (and if you pick something else, I‘m totally going to run and download a copy of Fake Dating myself 😂😂) 13mo
suvata A Witch‘s Guide would be great 👍🏻 Let me know what one you settle on. (edited) 13mo
5feet.of.fury @IndoorDame @suvata @DGRachel sounds good, let‘s fake date a demon! 13mo

Disappointing. I thought the character development relied too much on stereotypes without any depth. The world-building, well let‘s just say apparently everything exists in this world except ghosts. Ghosts are where the line is drawn. 🙄 I also felt this was a bit of a bait-and-switch book. (Explained in the comments below marked with spoiler so not to give anything away.)

wanderinglynn The title, the blurb, and the first few chapters set this up to be a story about witches. It‘s not. It‘s a Norse mythology retelling or adaptation or whatever you want to call it. Regardless, I wanted a story about witches not Norse gods/goddess. 2y

#firstlinefriday

“North Hampton did not exist on any map, which made locating the small, insular community on the very edge of the Atlantic coast something of a conundrum to outsiders, who were know to wander in by chance only to find it impossible to return; so that the place, with its remarkably empty silver-sand beaches, rolling green fields, and imposing, rambling farmhouses, became more of a half-remembered dream than a memory.”

5feet.of.fury Oooh I‘ve been wanting to read this, I loved the series 2y
wanderinglynn @5feet.of.fury there was a series? 😆 I had no idea. 2y
5feet.of.fury @wanderinglynn it was a on Lifetime and it got 2 seasons! I don‘t think it was very well known, but I thought it was fun! 2y

I know only the first book in the trilogy is represented here but I‘ve completed the whole series and I loved it!!! The writing is light and compelling and the plot is great if you love the fantasy genre or are into mythologies more specifically Norse Mythology since it‘s what this series focuses on.

I enjoyed the world created here. Add in the fun characters and I‘m hooked. Guess I‘m reading the rest of the series now.

Wan.der.love This has been in my TBR for awhile - good to see a 👍🏻 recommendation 6y
Jenny @Wan.der.love it‘s been on my tbr forever too. I ended up downloading the audiobook and listened in practically one day. Good solid 3 Star Read. 6y

I‘ve had this book on my Kobo FOREVER, and haven‘t read it. I watched the first two episodes of the show today on Hulu and liked it, but figured I better read the book first...I hate comparing the book to the show/movie. The other way around isn‘t so bad.

I really enjoyed the alternating chapters of the three main characters. It really kept it from getting stale. I also really feel a common bond with Ingrid. If you like books involving witches, I think this one is a must.

This was a quick read. A little mystery, a lot of romance and a lot of otherworldly beings (witches, zombies, vampires and Nordic gods/goddesses). I enjoyed starting to learn about all the characters and look forward to interacting with them again in the next book.

tpixie I liked the TV show! Was sad it got cancelled! I should read the book! 6y
Mollyanna @tpixie I liked the show too. The first book doesn't follow the show exactly, but I think the actresses they picked were spot on based on the descriptions in the book. I envisioned them as I read and it worked. 6y

This book is pretty dumb but I enjoyed most of it! Cw for brief sexual violence (the handling of which is not good! Spoiler: I do not care if it was just in a dream! Still bad!).

OMG! I actually really, really, really enjoyed this book. It was perfect for the mood I was in: something light and mysterious and fun. Witches, Vampires and Norse gods! How can you go wrong. I loved this! Listen if you like the show THIS IS DEFINITELY NOT IT. They are like night and day from each other. Just forewarning.

freyaheart It's a book!?! 7y
ReadingVampire @freyaheart oh no I'm guessing you watched the series, I'm really forewarning it has absolutely nothing in common except for the names. Not even the sister is in the novel. I loved both the book and the series but I went into it knowing they weren't linked. (edited) 7y

I thought I was going to love this - magical family dynasty who isn't supposed to use magic but is, plus the Hamptons? Sold. Except I hated the writing and Freya's story line was The Worst. Dnf'd.

With three different witches, all with their own distinct powers and personalities, this book is like picking between desserts at a buffet! It was a fun read, made even more entertaining by knowing that it's just the tip of the iceberg (series). #witches #magic #mustread
