Today's #read99women recommendation on my blog comes from... me! Loved this dark and twisty tale of murder, love and revenge. http://www.greermacallister.com/blog/2020/2/4/read99women-greer-macallister

LeahBergen I‘ve been intrigued by this one. I guess I‘ll add it to my shopping list. 😄 3w

I did enjoy this book overall. There are some parts that I found a bit confusing but on the whole it‘s a good read and a debut novel.

I wanted to follow the murder and be able to see clues, that‘s not what this was. The solving of the murder was super unsatisfying and occurred so quickly that it was almost an afterthought. I also was disappointed in the use of the historical time, I felt like there wasn‘t enough exploration of the time period. Lastly, the pacing was weird, it was a slow start and a fast end.

I liked the story and the narrative device. But the main mystery didn‘t totally click for me. A woman who was born a slave and is now a maid in England gets arrested for murder and tells her story.

I wanted to like this book, but I just couldn't get into it. Maybe it was the wrong time for me to read this.

I didn't find the characters likeable or sympathetic, I kept hoping I'd get into it but it never happened.

I borrowed the audiobook from the library because I couldn't get into the ebook. The book is narrated by the author and she has a lovely accent, easy to listen to.

ljuliel From the reviews I‘ve read, it sounds like you‘re in the majority. Most seem to be on the fence with it. I thought it sounded good but haven‘t tried it yet. 4mo

I thought this was a fascinating read. We switch from past memories to the murder trial with me being Frannie's defendent. The book splits time between Jamaica and England + evaluates drug usage, the lack of choices women have of every race, has F/F romance AND are quite upfront about what happened once slavery was “legally“ abolished, PLUS calling out racism in the judicial system. I loved all of it!

MicheleinPhilly Completely agree. This was such a pleasant surprise for me. I was completely unaware of it and picked it up on a whim from the bookstore. 4mo

On Moll Flanders. I haven‘t read it but this quote struck me funny. Anybody that‘s read it agree with this analysis?

Anna40 I read Moll Flanders. It definitely is preachy at the end but that's Daniel Defoe in Robinson Crusoe as well, or even more so. Considering the time, it is an interesting book and an uncommon heroine: Moll Flanders is a prostitute, thief and adulterer. Someone who always manages to survive and quite smart too. So I don't fully agree with this opinion 4mo

As usual, too many holds came in at a time awhile ago and I started and couldn‘t finish them all. They‘re all back and as usual I‘m reading too many at a time. The thing is I like dipping in and out of what I feel like. Monogamous reading feels like eating the same dinner every night. Catching up on some favorite quotes from this one.

Frannie is on trial for the murders of her employers in 1820‘s London. She doesn‘t remember the night it happened but can‘t imagine that she could‘ve done it. She relates her story from her life as a slave in Jamaica to her time in London. Frannie is an unforgettable character-strong, smart, and complicated, but is she innocent? This has a strong start but parts of the middle were so slow. All told it is a pick for me but more #likedbutnotloved.

Well...this isn t my kind of book. It's not badly written I was just bored and life is too short to be stuck reading a book I couldn't get into or find myself caring what happened next. I think this is a case of historical fiction mismatch.

Wow. ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Gritty historical fiction
1825: Frances, a house slave in Jamaica, is given as a gift to a wealthy man in London.
Murder. Laudanum. Love. Betrayal.
Perfect for fans of Sarah Waters. I couldn‘t put it down. HIGHLY recommend.

Wow. This intense historical fiction tells so many stories - of slavery, of addiction, of love, of society, of secrets - that layer upon each other, referencing novels and ideas and truths that echo amongst the characters. It‘s a heady mix, and a bold move for a debut author. Collins pulls it off admirably. Intense and dark, but brilliant.

#30JuneBooks - New Release: Usually on Thursday evenings I make a visit to the bookstore, because the books from New-Release-Tuesday have been unboxed and are on display. At first I walk around feeling electric at the possibility of becoming acquainted with so many stories...then reality creeps in like a misty fog clouding my hopeful vision with the messed-up ugly truth that I could never read ALL that I want to.👇🏽
