Such wonderfully rendered, full characters in this one! Many of them pushed my buttons and got my ire up (and the men were particularly spectacular jackasses), but they all felt true to life, and the glimpse into this small English village, upended with the arrival of the perplexing Miss Plum, was a light, fun way to spend some reading hours.

LeahBergen Do NOT go saving random people from duck ponds! 😆😆 2y

I joined the #furrowedmiddlebrowclub for my first read & am smitten 😁 Based on the title & how it started off, I expected a somewhat dark tale of #spinsterlit but this bloomed into quite a different story. The characters were flawed & real; they felt alive, very much as people are. There were no sudden reveals, but everything felt emotionally true. I took great comfort in the descriptions of a quiet but not quite idyllic 1950s English village.

erzascarletbookgasm Wonderful review 👍 3y

Cathythoughts Great review! No sudden reveals 👍🏻 Welcome aboard 😘 3y
Ruthiella So glad you are now in the group! I also liked how this book kept subverting my expectations. 😀 3y
batsy @erzascarletbookgasm Thanks, Jessie! 3y
batsy @reading_rainbow Me too! These editions have pretty covers 💕 3y
batsy @Cathythoughts @Ruthiella Thank you :) I definitely want to read more of her books! 3y
LeahBergen Aww, lovely review. You‘ve summed up exactly what I love so much about this series of books. And you MUST read this other book by this author (republished recently in the British Library Women Writers series) ... you‘ll love it. 3y
batsy @LeahBergen Thank you! And yes, O, the Brave Music is sitting on my shelf and it's because @rubyslippersreads said good things about it 🙂 So glad to hear that you liked it, too! 3y
LeahBergen Yes! I have her (and Simon Thomas) to thank for leading me to it. 😊 @rubyslippersreads 3y
quietjenn @batsy so happy that you‘ll be joining us. Like @LeahBergen said, you‘ve really encapsulated why this type of book has become my go-to. Not sure I made the connection that she‘s the author of O, the Brave Music, which is sitting on my Kindle ... 3y
rubyslippersreads @batsy @LeahBergen @quietjenn I‘m thinking of rereading OTBM because, as I remember, it‘s quite different. I‘m so happy that publishers are reissuing these vintage titles. 😊 3y
leah152 What's the #furrowedmiddlebrowclub? Sounds like something my Dad should join lol! 😊🤣 3y
Cathythoughts @batsy @LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads I think I‘ll get O The Brave Music ... 👍🏻 I‘m only looking for suggestions cause I havnt a clue about these authors...so far I‘ve really enjoyed all our books 3y
batsy @quietjenn This book was such a balm. I loved that it opened with Alison not wanting to get out of bed and throughout it just had characters wanting to take to bed because they felt under the weather or were tired... Such a simple luxury 😆 3y
quietjenn @rubyslippersreads yes! I am all about the reprints and they make me so happy. I mark it on my calendar when #furrowedmiddlebrow has a release day 🤣 3y

This 1959 novel shows the effect of performing an impulsive act of kindness (rescuing a suicidal stranger from ‘death by duck pond‘) on a ‘set in her ways‘ spinster‘s life. It‘s a delicious peek into a cozy, insular village and tinged with just a bit of suspense. I loved it.

Okay, #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub! What‘s our July read? It‘s your pick, @quietjenn !

CarolynM Lovely shelf of Furrowed Middllebrows 😍 Looking forward to seeing what you pick @quietjenn 3y
Ruthiella I found it nicely suspenseful too. What would they do about Miss Plum...what would Miss Plum get up to? 3y
quietjenn Well, I‘ve been going back and forth between a couple, but since I see one of them on your shelf and I don‘t think any of us have already read it, how about Table Two? @LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads @CarolynM @Ruthiella @erzascarletbookgasm @Cathythoughts @batsy (edited) 3y

As part of the #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub , I enjoyed this novel. It could have gone darker, but didn‘t. Miss Penny does a stranger a good deed by saving her life and then can‘t get her out of her life or her spare room.

Set in 1950s Yorkshire, it has a lot of the markers I‘ve come to expect from this imprint...light humor & romance & very much Britain at a certain place and time.

Now the question is what‘s our pick for July? You‘re up Jenn. 😀

LeahBergen Oops! Just posted my review, too, and asked the same question. 😆😆 3y
LeahBergen And yes! I kept thinking it just *might* go darker all along the way and was a bit surprised when it didn‘t. 3y
CarolynM I thought it might get dark when we discovered Miss Plum had been snooping, but it just wasn't that sort of book and I liked that about it🙂 3y

Ruthiella @LeahBergen @quietjenn No pressure Jenn! 😆 3y
quietjenn It‘s a nice sort of pressure 😉 As you‘ve probably seen on Leah‘s post, I think I‘ve settled on Table Two if that works for everyone? 3y
Ruthiella @quietjenn Excellent! I‘ll order a copy. 👍 3y
Ruthiella @CarolynM I agree. I was glad it didn‘t dipped too far over that edge. I wanted something charming and gentle to read. 3y
CarolynM @quietjenn Fine with me. Are we still looking at reading in July? 3y
quietjenn @CarolynM yes! This month seemed to go well, so maybe we could aim for the same in July - try to read and start discussion around the 15th? 3y
Cathythoughts Lovely relaxing picture👌🏻 Looking forward to July‘s pic 😁 3y
batsy I expected it to go darker, too! Interesting that this book didn't seem predictable at all :) 3y
batsy @quietjenn I've succumbed to the #furrowedmiddlebrow charm and July gives me plenty of time to order the book 😁 Looking forward to it! 3y
quietjenn @batsy ? at least you were warned going in! Happy to have you "officially" one of us! 3y

An enjoyable read with the #furrowedmiddlebrowclub gang. I liked the setting, the characterisation, and the ice skating scenes were fun. I don‘t know why the book is not titled Miss Penny and Miss Plum instead. I would have liked to know the backstory of Miss Plum. The ending was a surprise but I think very apt.

Ruthiella I wonder about Miss Plum and if she was intentionally manipulative or just clueless? I tend to think the latter. 🤔 3y
Cathythoughts I‘d love to know about Miss Plums history too ... @Ruthiella I‘m thinking clueless too ( she was nosey though , and knew where everything was in the house 🤔 3y
LeahBergen @Ruthiella @Cathythoughts I think she was mostly clueless but a wee bit manipulative, too. 3y
See All 21 Comments
CarolynM Good question. Why was she anywhere near that duck pond? 3y
Cathythoughts @erzascarletbookgasm @CarolynM @Ruthiella @leahbergen She certainly has all of us talking about her 😂😂 3y
batsy I'm close to the end but haven't had time to read yet today... I'm itching to see how it all wraps up 😁 3y
quietjenn It *would* make sense for Miss Penny to come first, given the nature of the book. 3y
quietjenn @Cathythoughts@erzascarletbookgasm @carolynm @ruthiella @leahbergen I don't think she's calculatingly manipulative, but I for sure think that she's learned if she just cries, someone will intervene and take care of her problems. I also think it's super interesting that of all the “main“ characters in the book, she is the only one that we never get a p.o.v. chapter from. 3y
Ruthiella Great point about POV @quietjenn.👍 I think it‘s also hilarious that we are all talking about her...ONCE AGAIN she steals Allison‘s thunder! 😆 3y
CarolynM @quietjenn Totally agree. I hadn't noticed the lack of her POV but it is so interesting - the author's deliberate choice to keep her a complete enigma. And yes, @Ruthiella yet again she is eclipsing poor, worthy Alison! 3y
rubyslippersreads If I were Miss Penny and thought I‘d be saddled with Miss Plum for the rest of my life, I‘d throw myself in the duck pond. 😏 3y
rubyslippersreads @quietjenn That‘s a great observation about Miss Plum‘s absent POV. But I think the story needs that mystery. @Cathythoughts @erzascarletbookgasm @CarolynM @LeahBergen 3y
LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads 😆😆 I felt that way, too. 3y
LeahBergen @quietjenn Great point! I never realized her POV wasn‘t given. 3y
LeahBergen @Ruthiella OMG, you‘re right. She IS stealing Miss Penny‘s thunder. 😆 3y
batsy @quietjenn Yes, great point about Victoria's missing POV. She's a bit like a cipher onto whom other characters can project their fantasies, aspirations and frustrations. 3y
erzascarletbookgasm @quietjenn I think you‘re the only who noticed about the POV 👏. Interesting indeed. 3y
erzascarletbookgasm @rubyslippersreads 😂 I‘m so glad Alison finally ‘got rid‘ of the Victoria baggage. 3y
erzascarletbookgasm I don‘t think Miss Plum‘s completely clueless. Like someone said, she knows that her crying will get her sympathy and help...but she‘s only taking care of herself. 🤷‍♀️ 3y
erzascarletbookgasm Maybe that‘s why the book is titled that way... Miss Plum had us all curious, talking about her, leading a possibly exciting life in the end...stealing the limelight from boring Alison. 🤔 @Cathythoughts @CarolynM @LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads @quietjenn @Ruthiella @batsy 3y
Cathythoughts @quietjenn Plum has no p. o. v. Excellent point ... well spotted. She is a bit of a conundrum alright 🤔😂 3y

I think this book should have been called Alison & Ada, because that relationship is at the heart of the book. Miss Plum was a spectacularly damp squib, & don't get me started on the men! I'd suggest that this is a feminist text, except that Miss Penny seemed trapped in childishness in spite of her independence. Did anyone get the Victoria Plum joke? #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub.
I think the two Miss Ps fit #CharactersAreFrenemies for #Booked2021

Ruthiella I just assumed “Victoria Plum” was some sort of English dessert? Like her name was Peach Melba or something? The men were awful...it was all about was she could do for them and not what they could bring to the potential union. 😠 3y
Cinfhen I‘m just enjoying the cover art and title 😉 3y
Cathythoughts Yes , I thought Victoria Plum had to do with a Victoria sandwich.. sponge with a jam filling ( maybe plum jam ) I wasn‘t sure though. Alisons baby voice drove me mad 🙄. The men were annoying , but true to form and so believable I thought. I did like the part where Ronnie slipped his hand into Pops in the church. I was in stitches when George PS‘d his letter with ‘ Vicky sends her love. ‘ Vicky!! 🙄😂 3y
See All 26 Comments
Cathythoughts #CharactersareFrenemies 👏🏻👌🏻 perfect choice ( I think I‘ll follow your lead & use this book too 🙏😘 3y
CarolynM @Ruthiella Even the men who weren't potential suitors, like the publican and the guy who gave George a lift, had awful attitudes! 3y
CarolynM @Cathythoughts I like your cake suggestion? I wondered if "Victoria" was a variety of plum I hadn't heard of. Yes, the men were believable, particularly in the place and time. It was nice to see Ronnie showing signs of growing up. The kind way of looking at the vicar's attitude towards Alison would be to say he didn't think she measured up to his late wife. And she probably didn't. I think "Vicky" was just the right sort of woman for George? 3y
CarolynM @Cinfhen I love the design of the Furrowed Middlebrow imprint and all the cover art I've seen has been lovely and very fitting for the sort of stories they are. 3y
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts I assumed that as well as I couldn‘t think of any other explanation other than it was in reference to a Victoria sponge cake. 🤷🏻‍♀️ And then I had to ponder it more when Ronnie had no idea what was wrong with her name (was he too long in America?). 3y
LeahBergen @CarolynM @Ruthiella @Cathythoughts And for any of you who‘ve read Mapp and Lucia ... didn‘t Stanley give you Georgie vibes? 😆 3y
Ruthiella @LeahBergen OMG I was JUST THINKING THAT! It only just occurred to me, however. Not actually when I was reading the book. 3y
Cathythoughts @LeahBergen I only vaguely remember the TV show .. but that rings a bell. The men are amusing .. taken with a pinch of salt 😂 3y
CarolynM @LeahBergen I didn't think of it, but, yes, you're quite right. They are both very much of a type. 3y
batsy Great review! And the Victoria Plum thing went over my head 😂 3y
batsy @LeahBergen Georgie vibes!! Yes! I was thinking he vaguely reminded me of someone (real or fictional 😂) and now you've clarified it, lol 3y
batsy Also, "damp squib" sums her up perfectly! 3y
erzascarletbookgasm I didn‘t know what‘s the joke ..thought it must be some very English thing, so I Googled it 🤷‍♀️ . 3y
erzascarletbookgasm @CarolynM @Cathythoughts The men are selfish and self-righteous, I didn‘t like any of them. I was initially annoyed with Miss Plum but towards the end I have sympathy for her..she‘s not manipulative as I thought, she‘s merely taking care of herself, imo. I thought she and George make a good pair. (edited) 3y
erzascarletbookgasm @CarolynM @Cathythoughts Although I didn‘t like the men, I‘m happy Ronnie and his father made peace. As for Alison, on one hand, I feel sad that she‘s remained in the village & never got to travel the world...but then it‘s what she wants, peace & things familiar to her..the village is her life. 3y
quietjenn Like @ruthiella, I sort of assumed Victoria Plum was a sort of dessert - Christmasy in my mind. It's really not such a good joke and Victoria's distress over it seems a bit extreme, but I suppose that is keeping in character with her. Agree that she's a damp squib and I found both of the Misses a bit frustrating and the men were such pillocks. 3y
quietjenn @Cathythoughts that was definitely a nice moment. Ronnie's about the only one who exhibiting any growth ... 3y
quietjenn @LeahBergen Yes, total Georgie vibes! 3y
rubyslippersreads I think Vicky and George deserved each other. I didn‘t like any of the men, and although I find Alison‘s life rather dull, she wouldn‘t have improved things by marrying any of them. 3y
rubyslippersreads @quietjenn @Cathythoughts Of all the male characters, I ended up liking Ronnie best, even though I detested him at first. 3y
rubyslippersreads @batsy @quietjenn @CarolynM “Damp squib” describes Vicky perfectly. 🤣 (edited) 3y
rubyslippersreads I think Ada was my favorite character. 3y
CarolynM @rubyslippersreads Hurray for Ada! My favourite too. 3y

Enjoying a bit of Miss Plum and Miss Penny before bed. I've slept *a lot* today (2nd vaccination yesterday), so we'll see how long it takes for sleep to come. I'm still pretty early in the book, but quite enjoying it. #furrowedmiddlebrowclub

I‘m now at 70% in the book and I still have no idea how it will all pan out! It‘s (in its gentle way) a real nail-biter! I don‘t want Allison to marry any of her beaux! 😬 (edited) 3y

I am enjoying the humour, the pleasant village life..and quite annoyed with Miss Plum.

erzascarletbookgasm Who is Miss Plum, this weepy young woman who has install herself in Alison‘s home? And getting lots of attention from the men in the village?! 3y
Ruthiella Yes! She‘s very manipulative...Or is she genuine? I‘m on the edge of my seat to know if Miss Penny will be able to extricate herself from the situation. 😬 3y
