The Daughters of Temperance Hobbs
The Daughters of Temperance Hobbs: A Novel | Katherine Howe
22 posts | 9 read | 35 to read
New York Times bestselling author Katherine Howe returns to the world of The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane with a bewitching story of a New England history professor who must race against time to free her family from a curse Connie Goodwin is an expert on America’s fractured past with witchcraft. A young, tenure-track professor in Boston, she’s earned career success by studying the history of magic in colonial America—especially women’s home recipes and medicines—and by exposing society's threats against women fluent in those skills. But beyond her studies, Connie harbors a secret: She is the direct descendant of a woman tried as a witch in Salem, an ancestor whose abilities were far more magical than the historical record shows. When a hint from her mother and clues from her research lead Connie to the shocking realization that her partner’s life is in danger, she must race to solve the mystery behind a hundreds’-years-long deadly curse. Flashing back through American history to the lives of certain supernaturally gifted women, The Daughters of Temperance Hobbs affectingly reveals not only the special bond that unites one particular matriarchal line, but also explores the many challenges to women’s survival across the decades—and the risks some women are forced to take to protect what they love most.

4/5⭐ This book is a part of a series but could be a standalone. I found the plotline engaging. Theres lots of vivid scenes and magic! I loved all the flashbacks scenes. It was a bit family saga which I love! Connie is a strong woman and was a good character. The writing is really good! This was my first experience with this author I enjoyed her style and I will definitely be looking into her other books in the future. Out on June 25th.

Avanders Part of the series including the Physick Book? Or another one? 3w

Swe_Eva I read Temperance Hobbs too - had you read Deliverance Dane before this one? I‘m trying to figure out if I should pick that one up, or if I‘ve already spoiled it. 🤔 3mo
Reecaspieces @Swe_Eva I don‘t think it is spoiled. I think it will open your eyes to parts of it. It‘s been years since I read Deliverance Dane. But parts came back to me. 2mo
Swe_Eva @Reecaspieces Great, I'll keep it on my library list then! Thank you. 2mo

I honestly feel like I didn‘t read the same book as everyone else, since most all other reviewers seemed to love or at least like this one. I remember when I read Deliverance Dane that it was decent, although could‘ve been so much more. This one just really disappointed me. The writing was choppy and confusing, the main character not very likable, & the ending a combination of too unrealistic and abrupt.
Am I the only one who thought this??

MoonWitch94 I felt that exact way about ‘Deliverance Dane‘. It could‘ve been SO much more than it was. I‘m on the fence about this new one....not sure if I will give it a try. 2mo
Coleen @MoonWitch94 Yes! I also felt that way about Deliverance Dane. I thought the story had such potential. Of the two, I think I liked Deliverance better, if that tells you anything.... 🤷‍♀️ 2mo
MoonWitch94 @Coleen Good to know!! Thank you. 2mo

I enjoyed this, and it didn‘t matter that I hadn‘t read the previous book, The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane. It works fine as a stand alone. The characters are interesting, and there are contemporary and historical story lines that complement each other. This was a LibraryThing early reviewer book, and my full review is up there. I‘ll get it on Goodreads, too, but that was being persnickety for me. Recommended 4/5⭐️

DarcysMom I am so excited to read this one! Sadly, I won't be able to get to it until closer to its publication date. 3mo

I‘ve been MIA for the last few days because of being incredibly busy and also having ANOTHER cold! I spent last Tuesday at the middle school and started getting sick Thursday night. No time until this afternoon to finally sit down, take some me time, and get back to my book. I‘m enjoying the characters, but I‘m almost 100 pages in and have no idea where this is going.

Crazeedi You'll have to tell me what you think, I read authors previous book, physick.. and so sorry you are not feeling well again! I was gone a few days too with my sisters. Sending get well vibes to you!!💜🌷 3mo

Howe‘s Physick Book of Deliverance Dane was a favorite of mine in 2009 so I was thrilled to get this ARC, which continues the story of Connie Goodwin and her search for truth in her past. Howe‘s writing is wonderful as usual, and the story isn‘t bad. However it‘s not as engaging as PBODD. The primary plot line is reminiscent of Practical Magic, but Connie‘s relationships with both the past and present do make this one well worth reading.

sprainedbrain Oh I can‘t wait!! 😍 4mo

It was fun to revisit the world of Deliverance Dane & descendants. I loved the history of Salem, Marblehead and surrounding areas. The idea of finding artifacts & clues in a generational family home was enticing. However, I found that the believability (yes, I realize that I'm talking about witchcraft here) fell apart in the last chapters. The scenes when the "recipe" comes together were too fantastical. But all in all, I liked it.
(Con‘t..)

LMJenkins
One pet peeve though, the use of the word "slurp" to describe a grown woman, a Professor no less, each time she consumes a beverage is really irritating. Unless she's ACTUALLY making slurping sounds every time she drinks these sodas and coffees....please, don't.

While doing research for The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane, author Katherine Howe discovered she is descended from two women accused of witchcraft in #Salem. She's written several books about witches and her latest book, which I tagged, comes out next June. #witchyreads

Linsy Ooh, I need to read her stuff! 8mo
