Color Me In | Natasha Diaz
Debut YA author Natasha Daz pulls from her personal experience to inform this powerful coming-of-age novel about the meaning of friendship, the joyful beginnings of romance, and the racism and religious intolerance that can both strain a family to the breaking point and strengthen its bonds. Who is Nevaeh Levitz? Growing up in an affluent suburb of New York City, sixteen-year-old Nevaeh Levitz never thought much about her biracial roots. When her Black mom and Jewish dad split up, she relocates to her mom's family home in Harlem and is forced to confront her identity for the first time. Nevaeh wants to get to know her extended family, but one of her cousins can't stand that Nevaeh, who inadvertently passes as white, is too privileged, pampered, and selfish to relate to the injustices they face on a daily basis as African Americans. In the midst of attempting to blend their families, Nevaeh's dad decides that she should have a belated bat mitzvah instead of a sweet sixteen, which guarantees social humiliation at her posh private school. Even with the push and pull of her two cultures, Nevaeh does what she's always done when life gets complicated: she stays silent. It's only when Nevaeh stumbles upon a secret from her mom's past, finds herself falling in love, and sees firsthand the prejudice her family faces that she begins to realize she has a voice. And she has choices. Will she continue to let circumstances dictate her path? Or will she find power in herself and decide once and for all who and where she is meant to be?

A great coming-of-age story about a biracial teen who is trying to find her identity while navigating being a teenager. I found Navaeh real, flawed, and honest in her search for belonging.

Bahni Turpin is the best narrator. I really enjoyed this story of a multiracial multiethnic teen navigating her parents' separation and how that makes each side try to cling to what they see as their piece of her. Neveah is also navigating what it means to be white passing and how to use that privilege with care. Also, smoochies.
CN: police brutality, cyber bullying, microaggressions.

Mehso-so

Feels a bit condescending to say you can tell a book is a debut, but...yeah. While I think it‘s terrific to see rep of the struggles that multiracial kids face & appreciated seeing Neveah try to reconcile the different aspects of her identity, overall the writing was weak & most characters were flat & inconsistent. Was also put off by the inaccuracies re: Judaism & Neveah‘s ALL CAPS RAGE against her Jewishness. More details in my GR review. 2/5 ⭐️

I‘m surprisingly in the mood for a heavy, hard-hitting, emotional contemporary. All the reviews say this will hit the mark! #nowreading

Nevaeh is mixed race and struggles to find footing in any part of her world. She commits many of the same foibles as anyone coming of age, but with the complicating factors of her ethnicity and white presentation. A solid book about racism and colorism, though a few of the characters seem to get a pass for their own bad behavior, which I didn‘t like.

A great story that highlights the importance of being a good ally, checking your privilege, and letting your voice be heard. Nevaeh‘s feelings about her parents‘ divorce reminded me a lot of how I felt when my parents got divorced when I was 16 (no cheating involved, tho), and I liked reading about an experience unlike my own, but that still resonated with me.

Do you do any makeup subscription services? I‘ve been doing Ipsy for almost two years. I started it in hopes of getting some good quality makeup to try for my wedding day. After learning the importance of rating my products so they could better customize my bag, I fell in love with the service! I like everything that came in the bag this month, including add on. I don‘t usually care about the bag itself, but this month‘s Betty Boop bag is so cute!

LA_Mead I did Glossy Box and one other one for a while... it‘s pretty fun! I only cancelled when I ended up with waaaay too much makeup! 5y

I really enjoyed this book. It is about Nevaeh who biracial and is trying to find her way after her parents spilt. Her mom is African American and her Dad is Jewish and she just doesn't know were she fits in anymore. My heart did break for Nevaeh throughout the book!

Oh my god, this is an extraordinary book. The way Natasha Diaz weaves the two worlds of Nevaeh's life is expertly done. Nevelaeh struggles with who she is and where she belongs and through the story answers certain questions about herself and finds new questions in the process as well. She finds love, family, secrets, and friends. Everyone needs to read this book. The last half had me sobbing. Please check it out!
