How to Bake Pi
How to Bake Pi: An Edible Exploration of the Mathematics of Mathematics | Eugenia Cheng
18 posts | 11 read | 74 to read
What is math? How exactly does it work? And what do three siblings trying to share a cake have to do with it? InHow to Bake Pi, math professor Eugenia Cheng provides an accessible introduction to the logic and beauty of mathematics, powered, unexpectedly, by insights from the kitchen. We learn how the bchamel in a lasagna can be a lot like the number five, and why making a good custard proves that math is easy but life is hard. At the heart of it all is Chengs work on category theory, a cutting-edge "mathematics of mathematics, that is about figuring out how math works. Combined with her infectious enthusiasm for cooking and true zest for life, Chengs perspective on math is a funny journey through a vast territory no popular book on math has explored before. So, what is math? Lets look for the answer in the kitchen.

Bailedbailed

The writing is not super clear, it does not help me understand math or how to do math, and there was almost no baking. Just putting a recipe in the front of your chapter is NOT using baking to explain math. I made it 50% and after almost falling asleep while reading in the middle of the day, I decided to finally bail. 0/5 stars, read this if you already like and know math but want theory. Basic idea is that math is not difficult, it‘s logic, yay?

Mehso-so

An accessible book about Maths (if there is such a thing) which uniquely relates the concepts to recipes, helping to illustrate the points.

Thank you thank you thank you 🙏 @Cupofjo !!! I had so much fun opening this package, everything was wrapped so cute. You did an awesome job, I can‘t wait to try making your grandmother‘s apple tart. Apple pie/tart is my favorite. 😄. The bakeware is lovely and the books are all great choices. I can‘t wait to start them. #FeedaReader. @MinDea @TricksyTails

Will I read a book about math principles ? Most likely no. Will I read a book about math principles related to and discussed in terms cooking (with recipes)? Oh, yeah 🤣 That, and I might also gift this to my brother‘s girlfriend who has a university degree in math and who also enjoys cooking 😉

Okay so I know a lot of this went way over my head, but I enjoyed it. The author has some interesting perspectives on math that I hadn't ever really considered, not being much of a math whiz myself. I liked how often she compared stuff to food, and I really liked the narrator. 👍🔊📚➕➖✖➗

My cousin gave me this book for Christmas - she didn't know it is on my "to read" list! I read the first few pages yesterday and I can tell this is my kind of book.

This just arrived from Housing Works. I am ready to demystify calculus. Or eat. Decisions, decisions.

CAGirlReading I'd say both! Definitely the most entertaining and engaging math book I've ever read! Enjoy!😄🍰 7y

This was such a fascinating book! The author uses real world examples to illustrate concepts which range from high school to graduate level math but the author's real strength is in teaching the reader to change how they think about mathematical concepts. I kinda want to take a math class now!😱

MrBook Huh, I'm interested, even though my worst subject in school was math, lol. 8y
The_Literary_Jedi I didn't "get" math until I hit 30 and read Lockharts book. I'm definitely going to pick up this one too. I tell all my students they should read books on Maths! 8y

The sentence I thought I would never say: I love the math book I'm reading!😱

Twocougs As a non-Math person (I'm an English teacher), this book has been drawing me in. I may need to read it now😉 8y
Mayread This sounds a lot more like the activity of someone that's stoned, than drunk. 8y
MrBook 😂👍🏻 An excellent quote! 8y

I listened to an interview about a year ago with this author and was intrigued. I hate math but I love to cook so I am expecting one of two outcomes, I will read this and realize I really like/completely understand math or I will at least end up with a few good recipes...diving in!

AmandaL I read an interview with the author, and I'm intrigued, too! 8y

The concept is to teach math through real life examples. Total fail. This book is boring, it rambles, and teaches nothing. I gave up.

BookishFeminist What a shame! I've been interested in this ever since I saw her on Colbert--maybe I'll try the audio at some point. 8y
Gezemice @BookishFeminist You might like it. Goodreads reviews are decent. 8y

This is my book club read. I am tired now and believe it or not, it is an easier read at the moment than reading my other books. Math and cooking? I would not have picked it, but it is intriguing so far.

Shortstack I love math! Can't wait to hear what you think about this one! 8y
