The Barefoot Woman
The Barefoot Woman | Scholastique Mukasonga
7 posts | 6 read | 1 reading | 6 to read
A moving, unforgettable tribute to a Tutsi woman who did everything to protect her children from the Rwandan genocide, by the daughter who refuses to let her family's story be forgotten. The story of the author's mother, a fierce, loving woman who for years protected her family from the violence encroaching upon them in pre-genocide Rwanda. Recording her memories of their life together in spare, wrenching prose, Mukasonga preserves her mother's voice in a haunting work of art.

It's the final Sunday of August, so we'll wrap it up the way we started -- celebrating Women in Translation month! I'll make a second post with my (small) #WITBookHaul, but I also wanted to post this with the tagged book -- a book by an African woman that was translated into English. It's on my to buy list now...

#MagnificentMarch Day 26: Mukasonga‘s memoir is a moving tribute to her mother, a fierce woman who protected her brood with an almost feral courage that #mask(s) the terror lurking underneath. The narrative is a quiet scream that speaks of probable loss and grief for lives lost, disappeared homes, and a transient existence that is designed to be degrading, yet is transformed to one of defiant dignity. In this 2019 National Book Award Finalist, Mukasonga conjures her mother, her family, and her neighbors as they reshape traditions to fit their lives as refugees in the mounting violence that will lead to the Rwandan genocide. The tragedy is only alluded to, giving space instead to the daily lives of the people. It's powerful, authentic, and very much worth the read.

ImperfectCJ I had more to say about this one than would fit above, so see my Goodreads review if you'd like more. 4y

ImperfectCJ @Bookworm54 Yes, I'm trying to get to all (or most) of the National Book Award finalists before the end of the year, and the list is a little light on “light.“ I wouldn't mind something more festive, but I'm not sure at this point how I'd transition to something like Studmuffin Santa. :-) 4y
Bookworm54 It looks like a perfect palate cleanser ;) 4y
