Four Quartets
Four Quartets | T. S. Eliot
14 posts | 16 read | 8 to read
The last major verse written by Nobel laureate T. S. Eliot, considered by Eliot himself to be his finest workFour Quartets is a rich composition that expands the spiritual vision introduced in “The Waste Land.” Here, in four linked poems (“Burnt Norton,” “East Coker,” “The Dry Salvages,” and “Little Gidding”), spiritual, philosophical, and personal themes emerge through symbolic allusions and literary and religious references from both Eastern and Western thought. It is the culminating achievement by a man considered the greatest poet of the twentieth century and one of the seminal figures in the evolution of modernism.

“Neither plenitude nor vacancy. Only a flicker
Over the strained time-ridden faces
Distracted from distraction by distraction
Filled with fancies and empty of meaning
Tumid apathy with no concentration
Men and bits of paper, whirled by the cold wind
That blows before and after time,
Wind in and out of unwholesome lungs
Time before time and after.”

Four Quartets, The Dry Salvages.
The wild thyme unseen, or the winter lightening
Or the waterfall, or music heard so deeply
That it is not heard at all , but you are the music
While the music lasts. ....... ♥️ TS Eliot

“What the dead had no speech for, when living,
They can tell you, being dead: the communication
Of the dead is tongued with fire beyond the language of the living.”

Despite this space on my right being left deliberately cat-sized, Frankie insisted on usurping the lap-space I'd clearly designated for a book and mug of tea!

And, don't be fooled into thinking he has any interest in Eliot. He's on record as saying Old Possum is full of oppressive feline stereotypes, and that the modern poets in general are pretentious shitbags! 🐱☹🐱

Today, I picked up this 1969 slipcased, clothbound Folio edition. The slipcase shows only a little wear, pretty good for almost half-a-century, while the book itself is in lovely condition. The burnt-orange paper titles on the spine, and front and inside-back covers look like they were hand-cut and glued, but that might be wishful thinking! The spine label is, sadly, rather faded, but the others are nice and bright. 👇

Bookwomble The paper used is a buffish-cream, possibly a creamish-buff (😆) and had a nice, smooth feel as the pages turn. I think I'm slightly besotted! 8mo

Footfalls echo in the memory / Down the passage which we did not take / Towards the door we never opened / Into the rose-garden. 🌹🌹Burnt Norton ✨T. S. Eliot 🌹🌹

From Eliot‘s East Coker from the Four Quartets. I really like Eliot, even when I have to work hard to understand him, because he writes lines like this. #dance #quotsy #quotsydec17
